Wave of school threats in Cobourg leave parents on edge amid suspected swatting

https://www.rebelnews.com/wave_of_school_threats_in_cobourg_leave_parents_on_edge_amid_suspected_swatting

A series of school threats has concerned parents questioning safety protocols and how official communication is handled during fast-moving and high-stakes incidents.

What was once coined “Ontario’s Feel Good Town” has been shaken by a series of school threats over the past week.

St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School has seen police respond to three separate incidents between April 13 and today, April 20.

The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) has an update on today’s situation that mirrors previous updates, namely that they suspect these calls to be a string of “swatting” incidents. That is, hoax emergency calls intended to trigger a large police response.

“Police believe this incident to be an instance of swatting. CPS takes all reports of threats or potential dangers to community safety seriously and responds accordingly to ensure everyone's safety,” a statement from the service reads.

Students and parents have since shared sensitive video footage showing police officers with firearms outside the school, including what looks to be the discharge of a non-lethal round as students were being released from the hold and secure. Continue…

Privy Council spent lavishly on yoga, limos, and consultants despite large in-house staff, watchdog says

https://www.rebelnews.com/privy_council_office_spent_on_yoga_limousines_and_consultants_despite_large_in_house_staff_watchdog_says

The Privy Council Office spent thousands of dollars on yoga lessons, limousine services and a self-described “productivity ninja,” while also paying millions to outside consultants for work similar to that already handled by federal employees, according to records obtained through access-to-information requests.

Among the expenses highlighted by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation were $12,900 for a Hatha Slow Flow yoga instructor, $20,400 with Ottawa Executive Limousine, $136,290 at the Pan Pacific Toronto, $386,700 on furniture and $1,300 for services listed as a “productivity ninja.”

The federation also says the Privy Council Office spent $3,975 on licensed products including coins, swords, plaques and crests, as well as $4,665 on artwork.

The department, which supports the prime minister and cabinet, spent $17.4 million on professional services in 2025, according to the documents.

Of that total, $5.8 million went to communications, marketing, financial and strategy-related consulting and contracting services, despite the department employing about 320 staff in similar roles, the federation said.

It also spent $641,400 on audiovisual consulting while maintaining nearly $1 million annually in in-house multimedia staff.

Another $4.8 million was paid to EssenceMediacom for advertising services connected to Canada’s trade agreements.

“The PCO already has hundreds of communications and research bureaucrats and then it spends millions getting consultants and contractors to do their homework,” said Franco Terrazzano.

“The prime minister promised to cut this kind of wasteful spending and he needs to work harder to keep that promise.”

The criticism comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged during the federal election campaign to significantly reduce reliance on external consultants.

The federation says spending by the PCO on professional and special services has climbed from $9.6 million in 2015-16 to $36 million in 2024-25. Across government, spending in that category is projected to rise to $26.6 billion in 2026-27.

The federal government has not yet publicly responded to the claims.

Canada a Sex Tourism Destination?

https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/canada-a-sex-tourism-destination/

A recent case involving a 31-year-old Texas man who lured a 14-year-old boy into an Ottawa hotel for sex has reignited debate about Canada’s age-of-consent law. Currently, the legal age for so-called consensual sex between two persons in Canada is 14 years old – one of the world’s youngest.

Police charged the man, Dale Eric Beckham, for abduction and luring of the boy. Police claimed, however, that the sex itself was consensual. In Texas, the man would face an indecency charge, with a two to 20 year sentence, or a sexual assault charge, carrying a five to 99 year sentence. In Canada, the abduction charge carries a maximum penalty of five years.

“We have these sex tourism laws for Cambodia and Thailand … when, in fact, we’re becoming a sex tourism destination for Americans because of our low age-of-consent laws,” said Conservative justice critic Vic Toews in comments to the Ottawa Sun. He would like to see the law altered to increase the age of consent to 16.

“It’s important to realize that, developmentally, these are still children,” said Cybertip.ca executive director Lianna McDonald. “They have a higher propensity to be victimized.”

The boy’s mother, meanwhile, expressed her disappointment with the justice system. “It concerns me that people from the U.S. are maybe preying on children in Canada because they know the laws are more lax,” she stated.

ArriveCan executives lose court bid, ordered to pay costs over internal wrongdoing probe

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/arrivecan-executives-lose-court-bid-ordered-to-pay-costs-over-internal-wrongdoing-probe/72866

Two former federal officials involved in the controversial ArriveCan program have lost their attempt to challenge an internal government investigation, after a Federal Court judge dismissed their appeal and ordered them to pay more than $41,000 in legal costs.

Blacklock's Reporter says the ruling from Federal Court Justice Yao-Yao Go rejected arguments brought by former Canada Border Services Agency managers Antonio Utano and Cameron MacDonald, who sought to overturn findings tied to their conduct during the development of the ArriveCan application.

The court decision does not determine guilt or innocence in the broader allegations, but upholds the process used in the internal review.

“My decision does not speak to merits of the agency’s allegations,” Go wrote in her ruling, which dismissed claims of procedural unfairness, bias, and improper handling of evidence raised by the two executives.

Utano and MacDonald were among the only federal employees formally suspended in connection with ArriveCan, a pandemic-era travel application that ballooned from an initial estimated cost of $6.3 million to $59.5 million. Continue…

Senior Public Servant Calls Student Visa Failures ‘Unacceptable,’ Promises Solutions by Year End

Recently appointed Deputy Minister of Immigration Ted Gallivan said past widespread gaps in tracking and enforcing international student visas are “unacceptable” and the system will be fixed by the end of this year.

Gallivan and a number of federal officials were testifying April 20 before the House committee on citizenship and immigration about an audit released earlier this month by Auditor General Karen Hogan that found considerable problems in tracking and enforcement of international student visas.

Specifically, Hogan’s audit identified 153,000 international students who were flagged for potential visa non-compliance in 2023–24 but found that only approximately 4,000 cases were investigated.

It also found that immigration officials failed to follow up on 800 confirmed cases of fraud and unable to account for the whereabouts of tens of thousands of international students whose study permits had expired.

“The negative findings, in particular the lack of follow through on fraud, are unacceptable,” Gallivan told the committee. “We need to act more quickly, more aggressively, and more thoroughly in the face of discrepancies.” Continue…

Alberta Premier Says Province Will Keep Daylight Time Year-Round

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/alberta-premier-says-province-will-keep-daylight-time-year-round-6014735?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the province will do away with biannual time changes and keep daylight savings time throughout the year.

Alberta is currently on Mountain Daylight Time (UTC-6), meaning that if the legislation passes, the province would remain on that time permanently. The proposal is expected to be introduced for first reading this week.

Asked by a reporter on March 5 whether her government would pursue permanent standard time or permanent daylight saving time, Smith replied: “I like more sunlight at night, and I think most people do too, because we are on daylight eight months out of the year.”

“Going to standard 12 months out of the year would be a big adjustment for people,” she added.

The move follows years of public debate, including a 2021 referendum that narrowly rejected permanent daylight time.

Smith attributed the result in part to the wording of the referendum question, saying: “If you just ask people ‘do you want to stop the time change?’ you’d probably end up with overwhelming support on that, as they have in other jurisdictions.” Continue…

Canada Post Reports Record $1.57B Loss in 2025

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/canada-post-reports-record-1-57b-loss-in-2025-post-6014918?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

Canada Post is reporting a loss of more than $1.5 billion before tax last year, a record-breaking figure it attributes to labour uncertainty and challenges in modernization that hindered the mail service’s ability to be competitive.

The $1.57 billion loss was $728 million greater than the $841 million the national mail carrier lost before tax in 2024, representing an 86.7 percent annual increase, the Crown corporation said in a press release accompanying its annual report.

The financial loss represents its “largest loss before tax on record,” Canada Post said.

The Crown corporation has documented losses exceeding $5 billion since 2018 as it grapples with a substantial reduction in letter mail and heightened competition in the package delivery sector.

Canada Post pointed to ongoing strikes by its unionized employees and decades-old rules and frameworks that continue to “impede the company’s modernization and its ability to compete” as two major contributors to its current financial status.

Annual revenue decreased by $315 million, a 4.7 percent decline compared to 2024. This decline was largely due to a 32.6 percent drop in parcel volumes caused by labour uncertainty throughout the year, the mail carrier said, noting that parcel volumes fell by 79 million pieces. Continue…

Canada’s Deal on Chinese EVs an ‘Irritant’ for US Ahead of Key Trade Negotiations: Auto Industry

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/canadas-deal-on-chinese-evs-an-irritant-for-us-ahead-of-key-trade-negotiations-auto-industry-6015049?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

Canada’s decision to allow Chinese electric vehicles into the country could negatively affect crucial upcoming trade negotiations with the United States, automobile industry representatives told MPs.

The leaders of two industry groups representing Canadian operations of American and global carmakers testified in the House of Commons science and research committee on April 21. The committee is studying the implications of Ottawa’s deal allowing up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles to enter Canada at a preferential tariff rate.

Brian Kingston, president and CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association, said his organization “strongly supports” Ottawa’s previous decision to impose a 100 percent surtax on Chinese electric vehicles in October 2024, emphasizing that Canada “must align” with the U.S. approach to China. The move by the previous Liberal government was in lockstep with the Biden administration at the time.

Kingston said now is a “sensitive time” with the upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) on free trade, and Canada can’t be “out of step” on China policy with its largest trading partner, the United States. Continue…

MPs Hear Testimony on Beijing-Linked Bomb Threats That Cancelled Shen Yun in Toronto, CCP’s Escalating Suppression Abroad

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is targeting the Falun Gong spiritual group internationally through a new coordinated transnational repression campaign, representatives of the Falun Dafa Association of Canada said at a parliamentary committee meeting on April 20.

“Two leaked CCP documents reveal [CCP leader] Xi Jinping directly ordered a new coordinated campaign, one that has escalated sharply over the past two years, combining disinformation, lawfare, and the hoax bomb threats targeting Shen Yun and Falun Gong,” Grace Wollensak, national coordinator of the Falun Dafa Association of Canada, told MPs. Shen Yun Performing Arts, a classical Chinese dance company based in New York, was founded by leading classical Chinese artists who are Falun Gong practitioners, to revive China’s traditional culture.

Wollensak made the comments as she testified before the House of Commons Subcommittee on International Human Rights, which is currently studying the global impact of transnational repression.

In 2024, a political insider revealed a directive issued by Xi in 2022 to suppress Falun Gong globally, targeting organizations founded by Falun Gong practitioners. As reported by The Epoch Times, the details of the secret meeting were provided by Australia-based Chinese legal scholar Yuan Hongbing, who has maintained connections within the Chinese regime’s top political circles. His accounts were based on information from two different sources, one a veteran from a CCP family who is now opposed to Xi, and another from an insider who is speaking out of reasons of conscience.
