More NYC landlords threatening tenants with calls to ICE, lawyers say
These cases are among the complaints the advocacy group Make the Road New York shared with City Council members on Monday, in a hearing on cases where landlords allegedly used fear of immigration enforcement to coerce tenants.
The organization said it has received seven such complaints since November – enough to prompt the group’s housing attorneys, who represent tenants in Brooklyn and Queens, to create a tracker for logging such complaints.
Ibrahim Ramoul, a housing attorney with the group, told councilmembers he’s seen a “worrying uptick in landlord harassment and threats to tenants related to perceived or actual immigration status” in the past year.
Ramoul and other housing attorneys are requesting that the City Council pursue remedies to deter landlords from harassing tenants. They said they support a City Council bill that would make permanent a pilot program started in 2018 aimed at discouraging landlords from harassing tenants.
The program requires owners of certain buildings seeking approvals for construction work to first obtain certification, based on interviews with current and former tenants, that the landlord and building staff have not harassed tenants.

Washington, D.C. — Today, Representative Chip Roy (TX-21) introduced theMeasures Against Marxism’s Dangerous Adherents and Noxious Islamists (MAMDANI) Act of 2026.
The MAMDANI Act enacts sweeping immigration law changes that would deport, denaturalize, deny U.S. citizenship, or entry to any alien who is a member of a socialist party, a communist party, the Chinese Communist Party, or Islamic fundamentalist party, or advocates for socialism, communism, Marxism, or Islamic fundamentalism.
Additionally, this legislation creates new definitions for each of these terms and repeals existing loopholes, including chain migration and fraudulent claims, in current immigration law that have facilitated the mass importation of Marxists and Islamists.
“Why do we continue to import people who hate us? Not just for the last six years, but for the last 60 years, our immigration system has been cynically used to disadvantage American workers’ competitiveness in favor of mass-importing the third world. This has not just led to higher crime and lower wages, but also the promulgation of hostile ideologies fundamentally opposed to American values.
By targeting the Red-Green Alliance, this legislation deploys new tools to fight back against the Marxist and Islamist advance that has devastated Europe and has now arrived on our doorstep, especially in my home state of Texas,” said Congressman Roy.

We have absolutely no obligation to open our doors to aliens who seek to undermine the Constitution, dismantle our republic, or champion ideologies fundamentally opposed to American liberties. A sovereign nation must prioritize its own survival and the safety of its citizens above all else. Minnesota House passes legislation to extend window for prosecuting medical assistance fraud
Combating fraud in state programs has been a consistent theme this session, with many anti-fraud bills being discussed, including a high-profile bill that would create an independent Office of the Inspector General.
But there are many other ways to fight fraud, says Rep. Andrew Myers (R-Tonka Bay).
He sponsors HF4425 that would increase the statute of limitations period for medical assistance fraud and other thefts of government funds from six years to 10 years after the commission of the crime.
“This bill isn’t just about protecting taxpayer dollars,” he said. “It’s about protecting the integrity of the programs that we have that serve Minnesotans.”
His fellow representatives overwhelmingly agreed by passing it 133-0 Monday.The bill’s next stop is the Senate.
These types of fraud are complex, can involve layered transactions in multiple different organizations, and can take years to uncover, Myers said. “By the time some of these investigators identify what’s happening, the legal window is closing."
