Baby sexually abused before death by teacher adopting him, court told

A “fit and healthy” 13-month-old bub who had been adopted by a teacher and his partner died with 40 injuries to his body, a court has heard.

A teacher sexually assaulted a baby boy he was adopting then filmed him as he lay dying on the bed, a murder trial heard today.

Little Preston Davey was allegedly “routinely ill-treated” by Jamie Varley, who took indecent pictures and videos of the 13-month-old.

Jurors heard Varley, 37, filmed Preston being spun so fast in a saucer at a play area on one occasion that his eyes appeared to go in different directions.

He also allegedly forced the toddler to stay awake and filmed himself deliberately startling the baby, The Sun reports.

Varley and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley are both accused of sexually assaulting Preston, who they were in the process of formally adopting.

Preston Crown Court heard McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was aware of the psychological and physical abuse Varley was inflicting but allegedly “wilfully neglected to protect Preston”.

The youngster was rushed to hospital on three occasions before his death suffering from breathing difficulties, seizures, a nose bleed and a fracture to his arm.

Staff noticed facial bruising but it was explained sufficiently by the defendants and he recovered quickly, the court heard.

In July last year, Varley allegedly caused Preston serious internal injuries after he sexually assaulted him at home in Blackpool, Lancashire.

Jurors heard he then failed to call for help and instead caused the bub further harm.

A video later found on his phone showed Preston lying on a bed in respiratory arrest with his lips blue, it was said.

The court heard McGowan-Fazakerly had been at work and Varley was the sole carer for Preston that day.

He was eventually rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he died from an acute obstruction of his upper airway.

Jurors were told this was caused either by smothering with a hand or fabric or the insertion of an object into Preston’s mouth.

The baby also had 40 other traumatic injuries – including 30 external bruises, a fracture to his upper left arm and internal bruising to his mouth, throat and other parts of his body.

IDF escalates efforts to prevent civilian return to southern Lebanon after ceasefire

Despite IDF warnings, civilians in southern Lebanon are trying to cross into their villages, raising questions about the future of the ceasefire.

The next big “battle” for southern Lebanon has started, though it is one that does not involve bombs or rockets.

As of April 17, the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire had kicked in. By Sunday, large numbers of Lebanese civilians attempted to return to southern Lebanon, despite IDF instructions not to.

Foreign media reports and social media showed videos and included interviews of Lebanese civilians using a variety of makeshift means to cross the Litani River into southern Lebanon, even at points where the IDF had destroyed the existing bridges.

Some said that they succeeded in reaching their villages and found significant amounts of damage.

Others said that though they were able to get into southern Lebanon, the IDF blocked the road to their village or used warning fire to make them turn back.

Hezbollah tells civilians not to return home

At this initial stage, Hezbollah has also, at least in public, told Lebanese civilians not to return to their homes yet, due to the possibility of a return to hostilities, including their ongoing use of improvised explosive devices against IDF soldiers in the area.

It is unclear whether they are maintaining that position in private, especially since, after the November 2024 ceasefire, Hezbollah encouraged Lebanese civilians to return to their villages against IDF instructions. This was meant to return life to normal in southern Lebanon as quickly as possible, as well as to provide cover for Hezbollah fighters to return among the masses. Both those reasons potentially apply in the current circumstances.

The IDF escalated its attempts to prevent the return on Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, the IDF publicized for the first time its new defense line, around 5 to 10 kilometers into southern Lebanon in most spots, with some IDF forces reaching up to around 14 km. at a specific point, telling civilians not to approach the line.

Then on Monday, the IDF put out a new, more specific warning, naming some 20 villages along the defense line which should not be approached, and naming an additional approximately 50 villages throughout southern Lebanon that should not be approached.

IDF: ceasefire only applied North of the Litani River

This latest effort appeared to be directed at deterring Lebanese civilians who may have remained in or penetrated into southern Lebanon from nearby areas where the IDF is establishing new positions and clearing out Hezbollah weapons.

Although the IDF has given general orders to open fire within southern Lebanon even if an approaching unidentified person is not armed, based on the idea that there are no civilians left in southern Lebanon, this approach may be difficult to maintain over time.

Since much of the world opposes IDF forces remaining in southern Lebanon, this controversy will especially increase if the IDF does, in fact, engage in shooting unarmed civilians who move into no-go zones.

There are also other unresolved questions about the IDF’s actions during the current shaky ceasefire.

Overnight between Sunday and Monday, the IDF said that it had struck a loaded, ready-to-fire Hezbollah launcher in Qalawiyah, north of the IDF’s established new defense line.

Although the IDF said that the launcher posed an “immediate threat” to its troops and civilians and that the launcher was destroyed in “self-defense,” Hezbollah had not fired on Israel since April 16, making it unclear how immediate the threat could have been and how much the action could be said to have been in self-defense.

On April 17, IDF sources said that the military could attack Hezbollah fighters who were in southern Lebanon post-ceasefire and who did not surrender.

In that sense, the IDF said that the ceasefire only applied North of the Litani River. Nevertheless, this left the legitimacy of the attack on the specific rocket launcher, which was North of the Litani River, unclear.

Under the laws of war, the IDF can attack Hezbollah weapons, which could endanger Israeli civilians even if the danger was not immediate, given the recent history of Hezbollah launching tens of thousands of rockets and drones at Israeli civilians.

ASX director Giuseppe Porcelli criminally convicted in Italy, gets prison pardon

Vivacious ASX director and entrepreneur extraordinaire Giuseppe Porcelli was found guilty of “Fraudulent Bankruptcy” in Italy, yet thrives under the noses of Australian regulators

“Le bugie hanno le gambe corte” translates literally to “Lies have short legs”. It is an old Italian saying, no doubt used by many an Italian parent in an effort to teach their children right from wrong when they are caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Those who try to conceal information may gain a short-term advantage, but in the long run, the truth will catch up to the lie.

Back in October last year, Giuseppe Porcelli, the Manly-based immigrant entrepreneur from Italy, posted this on Hot Copper with regard to WhiteHawk Ltd (using his nom de plume “myinvest”):

“In response to some comment about my integrity in terms of “misleading shareholders”, I wanted to clarify that adverse media do not make a person guilty; it is a court that determines guilt, and I have never been found guilty of anything in my 50 years of life.”

Anything?

An Italian with conviction

He seems to have “forgotten” to tell anyone about the long-running criminal prosecution and his relatively recent criminal conviction in Italy for “fraudulent bankruptcy”. A conviction that came with a 3-year prison sentence, so this is no small misdemeanour. This is big league criminal stuff.

The missing piece of Porcelli’s “immigrant done well” back story is, it now appears, that he was, in fact, running from a criminal court case against him in Naples, Italy, his hometown, for a “fraudulent bankruptcy”. What we might call an illegal phoenix scheme. A criminal act punishable by prison time if convicted.

Details are sketchy as things often are in foreign lands, but it seems that Porcelli closed a business that owed a lot of money to creditors, including, one might safely assume, the Italian government for taxes and duties. He then set up a new company and attempted to carry on the same business free of all those pesky debts.

Once the government worked it out and started its prosecution, it must have seemed sensible to Porcelli to get the heck out of Dodge in case he was convicted, as who would want to spend time in a Neapolitan prison with all those Mafiosi types? One can only assume that the pizza in prison there is not as good as that available outside of prison.

So down to Australia Porcelli came as fast as his “short legs” could carry him. Here he had no track record, no background, no convictions.

A clean slate.

The Israel cancer within the USA and entire western world

The Israel lobby is not a purely Jewish phenomenon. Much of its support comes from the evangelic Christian community in the USA. They are the most fervent supporters of the organisation that is doing more to kill the USA than any outside force or enemy of the USA it conceives itself to have. This loose confederation of individuals, many of them stupendously wealthy, are constantly eating away at and undermining the very fabric of U.S. society.

Due to a reliance on collective guilt and sympathy for the millions of Jews murdered by the Nazis in death camps the entire subject of whether the acts of successive Israeli governments have been right or wrong has been heavily skewed in favour of them being supported as almost universally right. Little to no criticism of Israeli acts of brutality against the Palestinian population has been permitted. The Israel lobby has largely been responsible for every such cover-up.

The relationship between the Israel lobby and those who inhabit the upper echelons of wealth, power and politics in the USA is an incestuous one where, as the saying goes, one hand washes the other. Money plays a huge part in this process where virtually all who agree to the alignments adhered to profit enormously from it. As long as the political views of those involved remain committed to Israel incompetence and extremism, dishonesty or even criminality hardly matter, only loyalty to the cause is deemed important.

If any individual is seen to step out of line on the long agreed Israel policy that person will immediately be targeted. To those targeting that individual the matter of whether he or she is a competent individual who works to benefit the people of the USA is irrelevant. If that person is not committed to the unswerving support of Israel, right or wrong, that person must, one way or another, be removed from office. Those who express and demonstrate their commitment, no matter how incompetent in performing their duties, are rewarded and supported financially, and in every other possible way to ensure they stay in power.

For the reasons above successive U.S. administrations have shown every indication that the wellbeing and success of Israel is more important to them than that of their own nation. This fact has come into stark focus in recent years as the government of Benjamin Netanyahu began its genocidal campaign against the Palestinian population of Gaza. Palestinians have died in their tens of thousands, most of them innocent men, women and most unforgivably of all, children. Yet criticism from U.S. officialdom has been muted and most of the time, entirely absent. The reason being the stranglehold the Israel lobby has over virtually all politicians holding important positions within the U.S. political hierarchy.

Now however, the disgust felt against the child-killing elites of Israel is sweeping the world and also among the younger demographic within the USA also. All the incestuous relationships across the power-brokers not only in the USA but across the western world are under increasing scrutiny and criticism. The older generation who continue to maintain their grip on power and continue to support Israel right or wrong are increasingly subject to criticism for their uncritical support of genocide.

The young of North America, not under any threat of being attacked and undermined by the Israel lobby in the way their elected officials are see no reason to restrain their criticism of Israel’s murderous acts against the Palestinians. They have long been taught to defend the human rights of all and to fight against injustice and wrongdoing and in their millions now they see with clear-eyed certainty that what the Israelis are doing is wrong. And therefore what their government and leading U.S. politicians are doing in supporting them is wrong also.

The Israel lobby has been like a cancer eating into the fabric of the political sphere in the USA for decade after decade, skewing the primary focus far from the wellbeing and benefit of Americans at home to their detriment while assisting in the crimes of the Israelis in the Middle East. Events long hidden due to the strength of the lobby, the history of the systematic acts of criminality against the Palestinians is coming ever more to the fore. The tide is now massively against the Israelis and for the Palestinians among the youth of the world with the USA far from excluded from this.

Wow these lunatics wrote a manifesto - from the people who's tech targets women and children!

Data Analytics Company Palantir Publishes An Ideological Manifesto

Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

  1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

  1. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

  1. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

  1. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

  1. The question is not whether A.I. weapons will be built; it is who will build them and for what purpose. Our adversaries will not pause to indulge in theatrical debates about the merits of developing technologies with critical military and national security applications. They will proceed.

  1. National service should be a universal duty. We should, as a society, seriously consider moving away from an all-volunteer force and only fight the next war if everyone shares in the risk and the cost.

  1. If a U.S. Marine asks for a better rifle, we should build it; and the same goes for software. We should as a country be capable of continuing a debate about the appropriateness of military action abroad while remaining unflinching in our commitment to those we have asked to step into harm’s way.

  1. Public servants need not be our priests. Any business that compensated its employees in the way that the federal government compensates public servants would struggle to survive.

  1. We should show far more grace towards those who have subjected themselves to public life. The eradication of any space for forgiveness—a jettisoning of any tolerance for the complexities and contradictions of the human psyche—may leave us with a cast of characters at the helm we will grow to regret.

  1. The psychologization of modern politics is leading us astray. Those who look to the political arena to nourish their soul and sense of self, who rely too heavily on their internal life finding expression in people they may never meet, will be left disappointed.

  1. Our society has grown too eager to hasten, and is often gleeful at, the demise of its enemies. The vanquishing of an opponent is a moment to pause, not rejoice.

  1. The atomic age is ending. One age of deterrence, the atomic age, is ending, and a new era of deterrence built on A.I. is set to begin.

  1. No other country in the history of the world has advanced progressive values more than this one. The United States is far from perfect. But it is easy to forget how much more opportunity exists in this country for those who are not hereditary elites than in any other nation on the planet.

  1. American power has made possible an extraordinarily long peace. Too many have forgotten or perhaps take for granted that nearly a century of some version of peace has prevailed in the world without a great power military conflict. At least three generations — billions of people and their children and now grandchildren — have never known a world war.

  1. The postwar neutering of Germany and Japan must be undone. The defanging of Germany was an overcorrection for which Europe is now paying a heavy price. A similar and highly theatrical commitment to Japanese pacifism will, if maintained, also threaten to shift the balance of power in Asia.

  1. We should applaud those who attempt to build where the market has failed to act. The culture almost snickers at Musk’s interest in grand narrative, as if billionaires ought to simply stay in their lane of enriching themselves . . . . Any curiosity or genuine interest in the value of what he has created is essentially dismissed, or perhaps lurks from beneath a thinly veiled scorn.

Iraq's Ruling Pro-Iran Bloc Races To Choose PM, While US Rejects Main Candidates

The US has suspended all funding and security coordination with Iraq, and shipments of dollars the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI), until a new Baghdad government acceptable to Washington is formed, Saudi state-owned Al-Hadath reported Monday.

The US is also conditioning continued security cooperation on the disclosure of those involved in the bombing of its embassy, the news channel added.

Nevertheless, on Monday, the CBI released a statement rejecting the Al-Hadath report. Since 2003, a decision issued by Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) head Paul Bremer has required that all Iraqi oil revenues be paid into an account at the US Federal Reserve Bank of New York, giving the US the ability to control how many US dollars are returned to the CBI.

From that point until today, the Iraqi Ministry of Finance has had to submit funding requests to the US Treasury, which then approves or denies them based on its own criteria.

This monthly transfer of US dollars, flown into Baghdad in pallets of hard cash, determines Iraq's ability to pay for basic needs such as salaries, food, and medicine.

Whenever Washington believes that Iraq is not aligned with US regional goals, including enforcing economic sanctions on Iran, Baghdad's major trading partner and a source of natural gas for electricity production, these fund transfers can be delayed or reduced.

The Coordination Framework (CF), the largest parliamentary bloc of Shia parties, has not yet selected a prime minister nearly five months after securing a plurality in the latest elections.

Former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, viewed by the US as "close" to Iran, was initially chosen to replace incumbent Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

However, while Washington wants to replace Sudani, it also opposes Maliki's return to power.
