UK special forces resigning en masse over war crimes probe – media
Soldiers are reportedly resigning as an inquiry examines alleged killings of civilians and cover-ups during operations in Afghanistan and Syria
Soldiers from the UK’s elite SAS force are resigning in significant numbers over fears of prosecution following human rights investigations into alleged war crimes, British media reports.
The probe largely focuses on British special forces operations in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2013, as well as missions in Syria and Northern Ireland.
A public inquiry is examining claims that troops carried out extrajudicial killings during night raids, including the shooting of detainees and unarmed civilians, and whether evidence was falsified and senior officers failed to investigate or concealed wrongdoing.
Members of 22 SAS, the British Army’s elite special forces unit, have applied for “premature voluntary release,” multiple outlets reported on Monday, citing insiders. The exact number of departures has not been disclosed, though at least two squadrons (D and G) are understood to have been affected.
“Morale is s**t at the moment,” one insider was quoted as saying. Another source described “considerable disquiet” within the regiment.
Lieutenant Colonel Richard Williams told LBC radio on Tuesday the growing number of departures from 22 SAS was driven by concerns among serving troops that actions during operations could later lead to investigations or potential arrest under human rights law.
Last month, it was revealed that 242 special forces troops, including 120 serving personnel, were being pursued by lawyers as part of human rights inquiries, according to a memo shared with SAS and Special Reconnaissance Regiment associations. The investigation, which some within the regiment have labeled a “witch hunt,” examines UK secret operations, with troops facing legal sanctions if they fail to comply, the memo said.
In 2022, a BBC Panorama investigation identified 54 people shot dead in suspicious circumstances by one SAS unit during a six-month tour of Helmand province, with unarmed Afghan men allegedly “routinely shot dead in cold blood” and weapons planted on them.

Israeli soldiers and settlers using sexual violence to push Palestinians out – report
Over 70% of displaced Palestinian households have cited threats to women and children as decisive reason for leaving
The report, published on Sunday and titled ‘Sexual Violence and Forcible Transfer in the West Bank’, documents at least 16 cases of conflict-related sexual violence attributed to Israeli settlers and soldiers over the past three years. The researchers noted that the actual number is likely significantly higher, as survivors often remain silent due to shame, stigma, and fear of retaliation associated with reporting such crimes.
Victims who have chosen to come forward described harassment, assault, and intimidation inside their own homes, including forced nudity, invasive body cavity searches, exposure of genitals to minors, and threats of rape. Men and boys also reported forced stripping, sexualized humiliation, and degrading treatment.
More than 70% of displaced households surveyed cited threats to women and children, particularly sexualized violence, as a decisive reason for leaving their homes and communities.
“What pushed me to take the decision of relocation was the harassment my wife, daughters and daughter-in-law were experiencing,” one community member was quoted as saying in the report. He added that when he and his son left for work, settlers would regularly stalk the women, whistle and throw stones. “I was terrified that something bad might happen to my family because of this constant settlers’ violence when I was away,” the man said.
The report documents cases attributed to Israeli soldiers as well as settlers, and adds that settler abuse often takes place in the presence of Israeli forces, who do not intervene or effectively investigate those responsible. It further notes that sexualized violence is not incidental but described as a deliberate tactic of displacement.
Families have adopted coping strategies, including sending women and children away, withdrawing girls from school, or arranging early marriages to reduce exposure to harm.
The findings emerge as Israel has accelerated its land grabs in the West Bank, approving in February the registration of large areas of the territory as “state property” for the first time since 1967, enabling further settlement expansion. The move has been hailed by hardline Israeli nationalists as a “true revolution” to tighten West Jerusalem’s control over the region.
The Israeli government has long sought to annex the West Bank despite widespread international opposition to the move, including from US President Donald Trump.
The Palestinian Presidency has strongly condemned Israeli advances into the territory, noting its latest land grab effectively voids multiple signed agreements and openly contradicts UN Security Council resolutions.

The House Administration, Oversight, and Judiciary Committees has released a joint interim staff report on its investigation into alleged donor fraud by ActBlue.
According to Breitbart, the report released Monday says five current and former employees of the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue took the Fifth Amendment 146 times during testimony before congressional committees.
The Fifth Amendment protects witnesses from potential self-incrimination by allowing them to remain silent.

Six in ten adults in France believe that their country is facing a “great replacement” with the mass importation of non-European immigrants.
A survey conducted by the Institut français d’opinion publique (Ifop) research firm has found that 60 per cent of French people believe that their country is experiencing a “profound demographic transformation” and that the French are being “progressively replaced by non-European populations, primarily from the African continent.”
Of those who agreed with the statement, 66 per cent said the development was entirely bad, compared with 21 per cent who felt it was neither good nor bad, and 9 per cent who felt it was a positive development.
Opinions on the matter were divided largely along party lines, with supporters of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally being the most concerned about demographic displacement at 81 per cent, compared to 76 per cent of Les Républicains voters, 37 per cent of Macron supporters, and just 30 per cent of far-left La France Insoumise voters.
Intriguingly, 64 per cent of Socialist Party voters expressed concerns about the country’s transformation through mass migration. Conversely, just 4 per cent — a Lizardman’s Constant — of National Rally voters felt it was entirely a good thing, compared to 39 per cent of Green Party voters and 32 per cent of LFI supporters.
LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon has begun to frequently invoke the phrase “great replacement”, originally coined by French philosopher Renaud Camus to describe the attitude of Western liberal elites who view their populations as mere economic units which can be exchanged with no consequence.
While the far-left former presidential candidate appeared to initially make reference to the phenomenon in ironic jest, he and his cohort of radicals have increasingly cast the political battle between “new” and “old” France, comparing their multicultural support base with “ugly” white France.
Perhaps giving the game away, Mélenchon was quoted earlier this month as saying that the far-left cannot rely on the white Catholic working class of rural France to usher in socialism.
This may explain his party’s focus on courting urban ethnic minority voting blocs, particularly the Muslim vote, with LFI having increasingly focused on issues like Palestine. This has coincided with the leftist party facing accusations of cosying up to Islamist groups like the Muslim Brotherhood.
According to the French government’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), there were approximately six million foreign nationals living in France in 2024, or around 8.8 per cent of the population. This does not include migrants who obtained citizenship or people who were born to migrant parents.
INSEE noted that there has been a significant change in the backgrounds of foreigners living in France, with three-quarters of migrants in 1968 coming from other European nations, compared to around half of migrants currently hailing from Africa.

Hungarian legislation shielding minors from exposure to LGBTQI+ dogma violates European Union (E.U.) law and hurts respect for human rights and equality, the bloc’s court ruled Tuesday.
The European Court of Justice said Hungary’s legislation, first proposed in 2021 by the government of outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, “stigmatizes and marginalizes” LGBTQI+ persons and their feelings, and fails to uphold the E.U.’s prohibition of discrimination based on sex or sexual orientation, AP reports.
Hungary’s law specifically prohibited the display of content to minors that depicts homosexuality or gender change, while also providing harsher penalties for crimes of pedophilia, and had been challenged for some time by the E.U. and its courts.
The AP report notes the former Orban government argued its policies, including a more recent law and constitutional amendment that effectively banned the popular Budapest Pride event, sought to protect children from “sexual propaganda.” The report adds:
In its ruling, the Luxembourg-based court found that, for the first time in an action brought against one of the EU’s 27 member states, Hungary had violated Article 2 of the bloc’s foundational treaty, which defines “the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities.”
It also found that the law breached rules relating to services in the EU’s internal market, as well as data protection laws.
Orban’s government had made the original move to legislate to protect protect minors according to Hungary’s “constitutional identity and Christian culture” gives new generations the chance to learn about Hungarian identity and “to protect its sovereignty as well as the national role of Christianity.”

Israel is (still) killing aid workers in Gaza
Officials say Israel’s attacks on humanitarian aid workers aim to block essential aid from reaching Palestinians, as Israel continues to impose a blockade on Gaza seven months into the so-called “ceasefire.”
Majdi Aslan, 54, was driving a truck for the UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) on April 6 when the Israeli army killed him in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza. Aslan was the main driver in a WHO convoy that was transporting injured Palestinian patients from Gaza to Egypt and other countries. The convoy already had its coordinated permit from the Israeli army to move, as per protocol. The Israeli army intercepted the convoy on the main Salah al-Din road, fired at the driver, and blocked the convoy from moving.
Raed Aslan, another WHO worker who was part of the convoy, told Mondoweiss from al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah that the truck was clearly marked with the WHO’s logo on the front, sides, and rear of the vehicle. “No vehicle passes through without official coordination with the Israeli side,” he said. “Three people were in the vehicle when the Israeli tank intercepted.”
“He paid the price of our humanitarian work,” Aslan added.
The convoy was carrying 17 patients who were turned back to hospitals in Gaza after the incident. Dr. Fathi Lulu, at al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, told Mondoweiss that the targeting of WHO employees will negatively impact the WHO’s ability to coordinate medical evacuations in the future.
Seven months into the so-called “ceasefire,” Israel continues to restrict the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza while killing civilians in airstrikes and border incidents on a daily basis. Among the dead have been women, children, aid workers, and journalists.
But the ongoing restrictions have tightened dramatically since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, carried out under the pretext of “security.”
The continued humanitarian blockade on Gaza sometimes manifests in clear and violent incidents, such as the killing of Majdi Aslan, but most of the time it remains less visible. Last January, Israel banned the activities of 37 international aid organizations in both Gaza and the West Bank, which has devastated Palestinians in Gaza, who overwhelmingly rely on international aid for survival.
“We are clearly observing a significant decline in the ability of international organizations to carry out their work inside the Gaza Strip,” said Ismail Thawabta, Director of the Government Media Office in Gaza. “This decline is not natural. It is the direct result of Israeli measures targeting the operations of these organizations, whether through restrictions on the entry of aid, obstruction of their movement, or undermining their working conditions.”
Some organizations, such as the World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), have already reduced their services due to Israeli pressure and continued restrictions. The WFP’s flour supply has been reduced by 30%, while WFP-funded bakeries have cut bread production by 50%, amid broader critical shortages in bread, water, and baby formula.
Abdulnasser Ajrami, the head of Bakeries’ Association in Gaza, told local news last week that the WFP reductions in the supply of flour and diesel to bakeries “have decreased bread production from 300 tons to 200 tons daily.”
UNRWA, on the other hand, announced that political and economic pressures have led to a 20% reduction in services provided to Palestinian refugees. In a press interview on April 5, Jonathan Fowler, Director of Communications for UNRWA, said the organization is being directly targeted to undermine its work.
UNRWA, WFP, WHO, and other UN-affiliated organizations worked in Gaza for years before the genocide, building an efficient database of families, their locations, and household sizes, with a monthly schedule for the orderly distribution of aid.

Former State Labor Department Employee Charged with Accepting Bribes to Approve More Than $500,000 in Fraudulent Unemployment Compensation Claims
ERIE, Pa. - A resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Erie on charges of wire fraud and theft of government property, United States Attorney Troy Rivetti announced today.
The five-count Indictment named Elizabeth Goss, 43, as the sole defendant.
According to the Indictment, from in and around June 2020, to in and around February 2023, Goss, while working at the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, accepted unauthorized payments from unemployment compensation claimants to approve and expedite Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and other pandemic-related unemployment claims even though the claimants were not entitled to those benefits. The Indictment alleges that Goss’s actions resulted in the payment of approximately $528,449 in unemployment compensation benefits to which claimants were not entitled.
“This investigation and the resulting Indictment send a clear message that government employees who steal and misuse public funds will be brought to justice,” said United States Attorney Rivetti. “Our office and our law enforcement partners are committed to rooting out fraud and safeguarding the public treasury.”
“At the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General, we are relentless in protecting the integrity of unemployment insurance programs,” said Anthony P. D’Esposito, Inspector General, U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General. “Together with our law enforcement partners, we are going on offense against fraud—tracking down those who exploit these benefits and holding them accountable. Fraud will not be tolerated. If you try to game the system, we will find you.”
“Postal Inspectors remain steadfast in pursuing individuals who misuse the mail to defraud government programs intended to support the American public in times of need,” said Acting Inspector in Charge of the United States Postal Inspection Service, Pittsburgh Division, Dave Cunningham. “We are grateful for the continued partnership and coordinated efforts of our law enforcement and prosecutorial colleagues, whose dedication was instrumental throughout this investigation.”
The law provides for a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both at each of Counts One through Four (wire fraud) and a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both at Count Five (theft of government property). Under the federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Roger Hoffman used a straw donor to make more than 1,200 illegal foreign campaign contributions in U.S. elections then tried to obstruct the federal investigation
MADISON, WIS. – Chadwick M. Elgersma, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Roger Hoffman, 70, a citizen of Saint Kitts and Nevis, was sentenced this week by Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson to 20 months in federal prison for making unlawful political contributions as a foreign national. He was also ordered to pay a $150,000 fine. Hoffman pleaded guilty to this charge on September 26, 2025.
On January 15, 2009, Hoffman, formerly a Wisconsin resident, became a citizen of Saint Kitts and Nevis. On or about July 9, 2009, Hoffman executed a formal Oath of Renunciation of Nationality of the United States before a United States consular officer. After renouncing his citizenship, Hoffman continued to make political contributions using a straw donor to disguise the foreign nature of his contributions.
Hoffman gave money to Person A and directed Person A to contribute to specific candidates for federal and state office in specific amounts, using Person A’s own name. To execute this scheme, Hoffman directed Person A to open checking accounts with multiple banks, with the checks listing Person A’s Madison, Wisconsin, address and provided the funds for these accounts. Hoffman however, controlled the checkbooks, online login credentials, and debit cards for these accounts.
For more than a decade, Hoffman used the funds in the accounts to make donations to candidates for federal and state office in the United States by writing checks drawn on the accounts and by using the debit cards linked to the accounts to make contributions and donations online. Hoffman falsely represented to the recipients of the contributions that Person A was the contributor or donor, when in fact Hoffman was the true source of the funds. From 2011 to 2020, Hoffman directed Person A or made in Person A’s name more than 1,200 federal and state contributions totaling over $300,000.
After federal agents interviewed Hoffman, he tried to obstruct the investigation by telling Person A to falsely tell agents that the contributions were made of Person A’s own volition.
