NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day

April 22, 2026

Earthset with an iPhone

What does it mean for the Earth to set? Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman gave us another spectacular view of Earth from their historic flyby of the Moon. Commander Wiseman's video, taken with an iPhone at 8x zoom, shows our entire planet gradually blocked from view by the Moon. On the Earth, the 24-hour planetary rotation causes the Sun to set below your horizon every night. However, on Artemis II the Earthset was caused not by the Moon’s rotation but by the spacecraft moving behind the Moon (at about 55 seconds in this video). Once rare, views of Earth are now taken many times a day from many spacecraft, including NASA’s SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) satellite tracking freshwater resources and USGS Landsat 8 and 9 satellites supporting water management for farmers, for example. Space agencies around our home planet now work together to provide unique and ever-improving views of our Earth.

Are Non-Human-Made Objects Orbiting Earth?

April 21, 2026

Life on Earth started with the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA), dated to 4.2 billion years ago (as deduced here).

Humanity’s first artificial satellite was Sputnik, launched away from Earth’s surface on October 4, 1957. It is commonly assumed that this was the first technological satellite around Earth.

However, suppose intelligent life emerged when Earth was 94% of its current age (which is 4.54 billion years), namely 272 million years ago.

In that case, a technological civilization could have started launching satellites a few million years after their intelligence emerged — similarly to humanity’s case.

About 252 million years ago, this 20-million-years-old civilization could have polluted the Earth’s atmosphere with greenhouse gases, enough to trigger the largest extinction in Earth’s history, ending the Permian period by killing 96% of marine species in a global warming event that left ocean animals unable to breathe.

This well-known “great dying” event in Earth’s history is often interpreted as the natural consequence of the release of greenhouse gases by volcanic eruptions (as reported here).

But what if this global catastrophe was technologically-driven instead? Would we have noticed any “smoking gun” left in the crime scene?

Over the past 252 million years, surface layers of Earth have continuously mixed with the interior, primarily through plate tectonics. Subduction zones drag surface crust, water, and sediments into the mantle, while mantle plumes and volcanic activity bring interior materials to the surface.

This mixing could have destroyed or buried any technological relics on Earth’s surface from that time. However, sufficiently advanced technological orbiters could have survived.

Such `pre-historic’ satellites would be flagged as Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) by the U.S. military and intelligence agencies. The imminent release of UFO files by the White House might provide archaeological evidence for a pre-human intelligence on Earth.

A more speculative idea is that humanity will develop a time machine in the future. In that case, UFOs might simply represent visits from our future.

The feasibility of a time machine can only be assessed once we develop a predictive theory of quantum gravity. So far, we can only say that no Jewish scientist was able to use a time machine in our future to travel back in time and prevent the holocaust by killing Adolf Hitler.

I would have certainly entered such a machine, because 65 members of my father’s family were killed in Nazi concentration camps. They were naïve enough to believe that German patriotism would save them from the Nazi gas chambers.

My grandfather, Albert Loeb — after whom I am named, was wise enough to leave Germany in 1936. He did not count on a time machine to correct the political miscalculation of his family members.

The most likely interpretation of UFO videos, to be released by the White House shortly, is that they reflect natural or human-made objects that were misidentified by the Pentagon or intelligence agencies out of confusion, by associating independent objects as a single fast-moving object, or being misguided by optical illusions or incorrect assessments of distances to objects or motion of the camera.

Nevertheless, if the data is good enough it could potentially flag outliers outside the performance envelope of human-made technologies — in which case these might be products of extraterrestrial technological civilizations.

Such objects would be a matter of planetary defense rather than national security, because all nations are passengers in the same boat.

As soon as the UFO videos, never-seen-before by the public, will be released on the website aliens.gov, I plan to analyze them with the research team of the Galileo Project and share our preliminary assessments with the public.

The question of whether non-human-made technological objects are lurking in the sky is not a matter of opinion or belief. It should be answered by scientific data analysis. And if the existing data is not good enough, we should collect more data with better sensors.

This is the goal of the Galileo Project under my leadership. We do not need to rely on the government telling us what lies in the sky. Instead, we look up and figure it out ourselves.

Aerospace defense engineer, military veteran killed in plane crash with family

April 21, 2026 4:06pm EDT | Updated April 21, 2026 4:23pm EDT

A decorated veteran pilot, aerospace engineer and defense researcher was killed in a plane crash in South Carolina last week, raising questions about whether the incident is related to the deaths and disappearances of 11 scientists tied to nuclear and space research.

James "Tony" Moffatt, 60, was flying with his wife Leasa, 61, and sons Andrew, 30, and William, 28, when the plane crashed in a wooded area near the runway at Union County Airport in South Carolina on Friday, the Union County Coroner's Office said.

The family from Huntsville, Alabama, was traveling from the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina to Huntsville, officials said, and had stopped in Union County, South Carolina to refuel.

The Union County Sheriff's Office said the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. The family was flying a Mooney M20 single-engine aircraft, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

Authorities have not yet released a cause of the crash as the NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration investigate the incident.

Moffatt is the latest scientist with ties to aerospace research and NASA to make headlines, with the deaths and disappearances of 11 individuals with similar backgrounds raising concerns.

His son, Andrew Moffatt, was also an up-and-coming researcher at the time of his death. The 30-year-old was a research engineer and scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville's Research and Engineering Support Center, according to UAH.

The elder Moffatt earned a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech in 1988 and previously studied as an experimental test pilot in the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Following his 21-year military career, Moffatt worked as a payload and flight crew support specialist at NASA’s Johnson Space Center Astronaut Office, where he participated in 14 Space Shuttle ISS construction missions.

After retiring from the Army in 2008, Moffatt founded aerospace consulting firm Moffatt Systems Inc., and later served as a principal research engineer at the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Research Center.

He also worked on the Army's Degraded Visual Environment Mitigation program and the Next Generation Unmanned Aircraft System technology demonstration.

Moffatt’s experience draws parallels with several of the scientists who have either died or been reported missing since 2022.

Michael David Hicks, 59; Frank Maiwald, 61; Nuno Loureiro, 47; Jason Thomas, 45; Amy Eskridge, 34; and Carl Grillmair, 47, all died between 2022 and 2026.

Monica Reza, 60; Melissa Casias, 53; Anthony Chavez, 79; Steven Garcia, 48; and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland, 68, were all reported missing throughout 2023 to 2026, with each of their disappearances occurring under suspicious circumstances.

Both Reza and Eskridge shared similarities with Moffatt relating to their NASA-based research, with Reza disappearing when she was the director of materials processing at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Additionally, several of the scientists worked within defense labs – mirroring Moffatt’s experience as the founder of aerospace consulting firm Moffatt Systems Inc.

Moffatt’s two sons were also ingrained in similar scientific fields at the time of their deaths.

Andrew Moffatt served as a research engineer and scientist at UAH's Research and Engineering Support Center.

"Andrew was a well-rounded and fine young man, and his spirit made every day an enjoyable day," Jerry Hendrix, executive director of RSESC, said in a statement. "We will never forget his smile, inviting personality and his encouragement. He will be missed."

William Moffatt worked in the information technology industry, and recently earned his Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator Associate certification and held CompTIA Security+ and Linux+ credentials, according to his LinkedIn.

The disappearances and deaths of the 11 scientists have gained the attention of politicians in Washington, with House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., warning that "something sinister" could be involved.

"We've put a notice out to the Department of War, the FBI, NASA, and the Department of Energy.

We want to know everything they know about what happened with these scientists, because those four agencies were predominantly the ones these 11 individuals were affiliated with," he said during an appearance on "Fox & Friends Weekend."

"We want to try to piece this together."

On Monday, NASA announced it would work alongside other federal agencies to investigate the incidents.

"NASA is coordinating and cooperating with the relevant agencies in relation to the missing scientists," NASA spokesperson Bethany Stephens wrote on X.

"At this time, nothing related to NASA indicates a national security threat. The agency is committed to transparency and will provide more information as it becomes available."

In a statement to Fox News Digital, the FBI confirmed the agency is working alongside other federal authorities in the investigation into the 11 missing and deceased scientists.

"The FBI is spearheading the effort to look for connections into the missing and deceased scientists," the FBI said. "We are working with the Department of Energy, Department of War, and with our state and state and local law enforcement partners to find answers."

"I hope it's random, but we're going to know in the next week and a half," Trump told reporters last week. "I just left a meeting on that subject."

The White House, U.S. Army and NASA did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment regarding whether Moffatt’s death is being investigated alongside the 11 scientists’ deaths and disappearances. The Pentagon referred all questions to the U.S. Army and FBI.

Crew Studies Biotech on Tuesday to Advance Health and Space Economy

April 21, 2026 4:18PM

Biotechnology research seeking to advance human health and the space economy packed the science schedule aboard the International Space Station on Tuesday.

The Expedition 74 crew members also explored space physics, updated robotics software, and conducted an emergency drill.

Blood stem cells and DNA-inspired nanomaterials were the dominant research themes aboard the orbital outpost as the lab residents helped doctors on the ground explore new methods to treat space-caused ailments and Earthbound illnesses.

The new experiments were delivered aboard Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft on April 13 then installed and activated inside the space station shortly afterward.

Flight engineers Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) and Jack Hathaway of NASA partnered together on Tuesday processing blood stem cell samples to learn how to manufacture greater numbers of clinical grade stem cells in space.

Results may lead to enhanced stem cell attributes potentially leading to improved blood disease and cancer therapies and expanding space commerce opportunities.

Hathaway also powered up the KERMIT fluorescent microscope in the Destiny laboratory module so scientists on the ground could remotely view how microgravity affects the blood stem cells.

Afterward, the duo joined NASA flight engineers Jessica Meir and Chris Williams and set up the DNA Nano Therapeutics-3 experiment inside the Kibo laboratory module’s Life Science Glovebox.

The biotechnology study explores mimicking DNA-assembly to manufacture nano-therapies in microgravity potentially improving patient treatments on Earth and benefitting the space economy.

Meir later configured and powered on the Canadian Space Agency’s Bio-Analyzer then tested the research device that analyzes the molecular and cellular properties of a variety of biological samples.

Next, she injected gas into experiment hardware installed inside Destiny’s Microgravity Science Glovebox for a physics study exploring long-term storage methods of cryogenic fluids for spacecraft fuel and life support systems.

Williams began his shift with station commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and flight engineer Sergei Mikaev, both Roscosmos cosmonauts, practicing an emergency departure drill inside the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft.

The trio trained for the evacuation procedure on a descent simulator as Roscosmos mission controllers on the ground monitored in real time.

Afterward, Kud-Sverchkov jogged on the Zvezda service module’s treadmill while attached to sensors measuring his cardiac activity for a regularly scheduled fitness test.

Mikaev filled out a questionnaire helping researchers understand how international crews work together potentially leading to improved training techniques.

Roscosmos flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev worked inside the Nauka science module installing new software on a laptop computer for improved control of the European robotic arm.

The two-time space station resident also worked throughout Tuesday maintaining plumbing and ventilation systems throughout the orbiting lab’s Roscosmos segment.
