New Jersey’s most vulnerable GOP incumbent is MIA

Rep. Tom Kean Jr.'s team said the absence is due to unspecified health issues.

By DANIEL HAN and MIA MCCARTHY

04/22/2026, 6:50PM ET

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. represents New Jersey’s most competitive district this November — but nobody, even his GOP colleagues, can say where he’s been for the past month.

A scion of one of the state’s most storied political dynasties, Kean’s team says the two-term congressmember is facing unspecified health issues. The New Jersey Republican hasn’t voted since March 5 and has missed almost 50 roll call votes.

The other two Republicans in the New Jersey delegation, Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, said they have called and texted Kean out of concern for his health. But so far, neither said they have heard from him. Van Drew said it’s been “radio silence.”

Several New York Republicans who have worked with Kean on key issues said similarly. Kean’s absence has largely fallen under the radar and GOP leaders haven’t addressed the issue to the conference, according to several Republicans.

One Republican, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), said he didn’t even realize Kean had been missing until he tried to find him on the House floor Tuesday.

“I was looking for him,” Bacon said in an interview Wednesday. “I didn’t know it was that long.”

“I know the congressman and his family appreciate all of the well wishes and support,” Kean consultant Harrison Neely told POLITICO. “Please know that he will be back on a regular full schedule very soon.”

Closer to home, Kean’s allies also expect him to come back soon.

“I don’t even know the truth myself or even enough to disclose any information,” Union County GOP Chair Carlos Santos told POLITICO. “But I have been texting with him and was told he’ll be fine and make a full recovery in the next couple weeks.”

Kean represents New Jersey’s most competitive House seat — the 7th Congressional District, a large swath across the northern and central part of the state that includes Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. President Donald Trump narrowly carried it by one point in the 2024 presidential race, but Democratic former Rep. Mikie Sherrill carried the district by nearly two points in the 2025 governor’s race. Kean won the district by around five points in 2024.

Kean enters reelection in what could be his most challenging congressional bid to date. He faces an environment that is increasingly challenging for Republicans and the Trump administration is opening an immigration detention facility in his district while pulling funding for a major infrastructure project for New Jersey commuters — both of which have put him in a precarious position.

But Kean’s backers say his temporary absence will hardly be on voters’ minds come November.

“Everyone understands from their own family experiences that people run into unexpected health issues,” Bill Palatucci, a Republican National Committee member and attorney to the Kean campaign, told POLITICO. “Voters will be completely sympathetic and it’s so early in the year that it will be long forgotten come the fall.”

There is a competitive Democratic primary to take on Kean, with four prominent candidates.

Democrats in the New Jersey delegation have also noticed his absence and have started to be concerned for the congressmember’s health. Those members have also not heard anything.

“It’s been a long absence,” New Jersey Democrat Rep. Rob Menendez said. “I hope he’s doing all right. But I haven’t heard anything.”

What’s really stupid is these disappearances started in 2022, did the Bidan Admin get rid of these people. Did it ever come out in the news during Bidan admin? It’s five years it’s been ignored. When did Trump Admin be notified?

The whole Congress knew years ago of the net worth of Ilan and her husband, and now she removes the millions. The Congress never tell the public of how corrupt many of these people are. They should never have the right to investigate crimes of members. Call the agencies to investigate. So they have some secret agreement to not turn crimes over to agencies. They create the problem and they sit on their hands for years to say, we knew what was happening and we investigated it.

Why is the Senate and Congress allowed to bypass criminal laws that they commit?. The House and Senate should never have the right to cover up for criminals.

The truth is neither one works for the American People, they pass laws after they’ve invested in the companies they pass a law on. Cut that off and there would be a lot less people running or getting re-elected in either of them.

Honestly how do they believe they are working for the American People. Even blabby Comer is involved, he said they knew for years there was something fishy with Ilhan.

Exclusive—Rep. Lauren Boebert & Rep. Eric Burlison: They’re Spying on Gun Owners, and Congress Has Until April 30 to Do Something About It

23 Apr 2026.1/2(oh and Congress members are exempt)

Congress just bought itself one week to get this right. Don’t waste them.

Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is sold as a tool to spy on foreign terrorists. What surveillance hawks leave out is that when a foreign target — who can be virtually anyone — communicates with an American, those messages get swept into the database too. No warrant. No notice. And then the CIA, NSA, and FBI search through those private communications using Americans’ names, emails, and other identifiers — and no warrant is required for that either.

These “queries” for Americans’ information is what we call “backdoor searches,” and it is central to the raging fight over whether to reauthorize FISA.A federal court called it unconstitutional. The searches keep happening anyway.

Now add artificial intelligence to that picture. The government can now train AI on information about your constitutionally protected activity, from what you buy to what websites you visit to where you sleep at night, all based on information purchased from data brokers without any court or law authorizing agencies to do so.The Cato Institute has documentedhow AI tools are being used to generate the legal justifications for initiating surveillance in the first place — the government is using algorithms to write its own permission slips.

In many cases, there’s no human on the other end making the judgement call —just an AI deciding it’s your turn to lose your right to privacy.

As Sen. RonWyden (D-OR) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) noted in introducing their bipartisan FISA reform bill, “advances in technology, from AI to the explosion of Americans’ data available for purchase, have far outpaced the laws protecting Americans’ privacy.”

These are two of the most critical sticking points in the ongoing FISA fight — the backdoor search and data broker loopholes. A bipartisan blob is fighting to keep the status quo, and a bipartisan team of strange bedfellows, including ourselves, are standing up for reform.

The Government Is Building a Gun Registry. They’re Just Not Calling It That.

Federal agencies are buying your personal data from commercial data brokers. The data for sale includes your location history — every gun store, range, and sporting goods shop your phone went near. Your financial records — every ammo purchase. Your consumer behavior profile. The Cato Institute has described how this creates insight into gun ownership at a level of commercial granularity that rivals a formal registry. The government doesn’t need your Form 4473. It buys the data trail your constitutionally protected actions leave behind. The AI layer makes this worse. Those broker datasets don’t just record where you’ve been — they’re used to build predictive profiles of who you are and what you might do.

This problem compounds when it’s combined withhow Section 702 can be used to directly collect information about gun owners. “Major firearms manufacturers supplying the American civilian market areheadquartered abroad: Glock in Austria, Heckler & Koch and Sig Sauer’s parent company in Germany, Beretta, Benelli, and Fabarm in Italy, IWI in Israel, and CZ in the Czech Republic … These foreign-to-US-subsidiary communications areprecisely the kind of international business communications that §702 upstream incidental collection could capture.”

And it’s not just guns. The same pipelinecan map your neighbor’s political and religious affiliations— private decisions that belong to them and nobody else.Protecting that privacy is not a left or right-wing position. It’s what the Fourth Amendment requires.

2/2

What We’re Asking For

Conservative Republicans killed the clean reauthorization last week, and they were right to so. Now we have until April 30 to find a path forward.

First, require a warrant before the FBI searches an American’s private communications. This failed by a single vote in 2024. The government now claims it conducts only a few thousand such searches a year. C Great, the courts can handle that load. If the real number is higher, that proves exactly why the warrant requirement is necessary.

Second, close the data broker loophole. The bipartisan Wyden-Lee-Davidson bill, Rep. Andy Biggs’s Protect Liberty Act, and the Durbin-Lee SAFE Act would all reauthorize FISA while.banning the federal government from buying Americans’ data without court orders. If collecting your location data directly would require a warrant, buying it from a broker should too.

The Founders required the government to ask permission before searching for your effects. They wrote it down. One week is enough time to honor that — if Congress actually wants to.

Lauren Boebert represents Colorado’s 4th congressional district, and Eric Burlison represents Missouri’s 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

CNN Legal Expert Warns Democrats Their Virginia Gerrymander Is in Big Trouble

Isaac Schorr

Apr 23rd, 2026, 3:00 pm

Elie Honigwarned that Democrats’ effort to push a partisan gerrymander of Virginia through the state legislature is in big trouble during a Thursday afternoon segment on CNN News Central.

After noting that a judge had blocked the implementation of the Democrats’ preferred map one day after Virginians voted to allow the legislature to do so and that Virginia Attorney GeneralJay Jones (D) plans to appeal, anchors Boris Sanchez and Brianna Keilarasked Honig, “Do you think this challenge in Virginia has a chance of succeeding?”

“I do think it has a chance of success — this battle is not over,” replied Honig. “So, if you look at there are various challenges here brought by the RNC and other Republican entities, they’re basically making two types of challenges here. One is substantive, so they’re arguing that the way the question was phrased on the ballot was unfair, was misleading. And there is some legitimacy to that. I mean, the question asks, do you want to, quote, ‘restore fairness to the process?’ Who’s going to realistically vote no on that? I mean, a lot of people did, but it’s slanted, I don’t know if it’s slanted enough to win the legal challenge. But the second category is the procedural challenges. And that’s where I think the challengers have some real heft behind their arguments”

“For example,” he continued, “One of the laws says, if you’re going to do this, the Virginia general assembly has to pass a law, and then voting, the referendum, can’t start for 90 days after the law is passed. Here, we’re not even 90 days out now, and the voting’s done. So I don’t know how Virginia’s going to defend that. There’s another procedural quirk, I guess, that says, the way you have to do this is the Virginia general assembly has to pass a law, then you need to have an intervening election. Then a second general assembly needs to pass the law again. And the argument here that you’re hearing from the defenders is, ‘Well, the 2025 governor election, that’s the intervening election.’ The problem is that overlapped with the first vote so there’s some procedural nuance here that I think is going to be a real problem for people defending this outcome, and I think it’s going to give the Republicans a chance to actually get it knocked down on the legal challenges.”

Later, Honig argued that“the extremity of this redistricting, the fact that you have a state that’s roughly 50-50, a little bit Democratic-leaning, ends up with a 10-to-1 congressional split” could also imperil the new map!

“I don’t know how that’s going to sit when it gets up the line in the courts. It’s not technically legally relevant, but I think the extremity of this is going to be something that judges do take notice of,” said Honig.
