Yet Another Dead NASA Scientist: Nuclear Propulsion Expert Was Found Charred Inside Crashed Tesla

The case of yet another top NASA nuclear engineer turning up dead in a fiery crash has hit the headlines, adding to the dark and mysterious pattern of experts tied to advanced propulsion and space secrets apparently being targeted.

Joshua LeBlanc, 29, a team lead on NASA’s most cutting-edge nuclear thermal propulsion projects, was found charred beyond recognition inside his burned Tesla after vanishing from his Huntsville, Alabama home. His family immediately feared abduction. He left his phone and wallet behind—an act they called completely uncharacteristic.

Tesla Sentry Mode data later showed the vehicle sat motionless at Huntsville International Airport for four hours the morning of July 22, 2025. The car was discovered that afternoon after colliding with a guardrail, slamming into trees, and erupting in flames. Authorities confirmed his identity days later through forensic examination.

LeBlanc had worked at NASA for over five years, first as team lead for the Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) Instrumentation and Control Maturation project, then leading NASA’s Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operation (DRACO)—a nuclear thermal propulsion engine designed to slash travel times to Mars and beyond.

His family told local outlets the trip west was never part of his plans for the day, and he had been in regular contact right up until he vanished. “They feared he had been abducted,” reports confirmed.

This case fits squarely into the disturbing wave of deaths and disappearances among scientists working on nuclear, propulsion, and space technologies—now totaling at least thirteen cases since 2022. LeBlanc’s death comes as President Trump has repeatedly signaled his intent to rip open the government’s UFO files.

.@spencerpratt exposes the SHOCKING reality of LA’s homeless crisis 👇

Pratt told Carolla, “If you fund public safety and quality of life, guess who loses billions of dollars? The NGOs that give the kickbacks, that get these people elected, that come up with the fancy names.”

“The billions aren’t missing, they’re spent. But how they spend them is to increase the problem.”

“I was talking to this law enforcement guy that was at this community event. He said yesterday….crazed dude peeing, pooping everywhere on the street in front of all these kids at school. And they get ’em under control. And then one of the health people comes, and they go, ‘Would you like a pipe or a needle?'”

“And this law enforcement goes, ‘Excuse me?’ Like, ‘Yes, we can give them a pipe or a needle.’ He’s like, ‘What?’ And this is what we’re talking about. These are the medical street teams that Nithya and Bass to give them pipes and needles. It’s insane.”

“And what the reality is, every one of these people is breaking the law. You cannot live on the street. You cannot do drugs on the street. You cannot be naked on the street. And people go, ‘Well, what are you gonna do, Spencer? Where are you gonna put these people?'”

“Well, first off, most of these people are not from California. They’ve been bussed in by body brokers because it’s such a business. These people make so much money. So once you shut down the business, and you go in and you unplug all these NGOs, they’re gonna go to Seattle, or they’re gonna go out and they’re gonna grab all these people, are gonna put them on busses themselves, because these are their products. This is where they make the money.”

“So yes, again, homeless has different boxes. There are sad stories. People miss a rent here and there. You got to help these people and get them housing. We have housing for these people, people that are fentanyl addicts, they need more fentanyl. People are meth addicts, they need more meth. You could give them the Four Seasons right now, master suite, they don’t care.”

“They’ll rather hang sideways on the sidewalk till they sober up and get new fentanyl. So these people need mandatory medical treatment. We need to bring asylums back. We need to have places that treat people for mental health conditions, not just say we need more affordable housing, we need more beds.”

Carolla added, “Well, okay, here’s what they do. They give something a title. The title should be street junkies, but they call them homeless, and then they call them the unhoused community. So if you’re an unhoused person, then you need a house. After the fires, you were unhoused, and so were thousands of people in the Palisades and thousands of people in Malibu and in Altadena.”

“So you and your family are technically the definition of unhoused because your house has burnt to the ground. Did you sleep on the street that night? And have you been on the street since? Or do you have a network? Did you go somewhere?”

“I was unhoused. I went to a hotel. I gave them my credit card. I checked in. I had friends calling me from Kimmel to Mark Garrigos to Dr. Drew asking if I needed to stay with them in their guest house or in their home because I’m not a junkie.”

RFK Jr. Tells Senate Glyphosate Causes Cancer

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told senators on April 21 that glyphosate, a key ingredient in herbicides like Roundup, causes cancer and that human consumption of the chemical should be minimized.

His comments came amid growing political and legal controversy over the chemical, which is widely used in agriculture. During a Senate Budget Committee hearing, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) asked Kennedy whether the chemical caused cancer.

Without hesitation, Kennedy replied, “Yes.” Schatz also asked if the chemical was safe for human use.

“I mean, safe, or does it kill weeds? It kills weeds,” Kennedy said. “I would say it’s important to minimize consumption of glyphosate as much as possible.”

Schatz told Kennedy he was being “uncharacteristically diplomatic about glyphosate,” which Kennedy, a standard-bearer for the Make America Healthy Again movement, denied.

Kennedy helped secure a $289 million award from Monsanto in 2018 while representing a client who alleged Roundup caused him to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Now, Kennedy is the leading health official for an administration that is defending Monsanto in a Supreme Court case set for oral argument just days after the health secretary’s testimony.

That case, known as Monsanto v. Durnell, similarly involves a man alleging that Monsanto’s Roundup caused him to develop non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The Justice Department didn’t argue as much on glyphosate’s alleged health hazards as it did that the lower-court verdict against Monsanto was legally flawed.

President Donald Trump addressed the issue in February, signing an executive order that said glyphosate-based herbicides were critical to the nation’s economy and national security.

“Any major restrictions in access to glyphosate-based herbicides would result in economic losses for growers and make it untenable for them to meet growing food and feed demands,” his order reads.

“Ensuring an adequate supply of elemental phosphorus and glyphosate-based herbicides is thus crucial to the national security and defense, including food-supply security, which is essential to protecting the health and safety of Americans.”

Schatz told Kennedy he had many friends in Hawaii who supported the health secretary, but they were shocked when Kennedy put out a February statement in support of Trump’s executive order on glyphosate, which would also give immunity to manufacturers if Congress were to pass it into law.

“Pesticides and herbicides are toxic by design,” Kennedy wrote in a post on X. “Unfortunately, our agricultural system depends heavily on these chemicals.”

Kalshi Bans 3 US Politicians For Betting On Their Own Election Races

Matt Klein, a sitting member of the Minnesota State Senate, was fined $539 for betting on his primary race in his bid for the US House of Representatives, which is set to take place in August. Ezekiel Enriquez, who ran for a US House seat in March, received a $784 penalty, according to Kalshi's notice of settlement.

Another case involved Mark Moran, a candidate in Virginia's US Senate race, who received a $6,229 penalty and was ordered to return any profits from his trades after allegedly refusing to cooperate with Kalshi to resolve the issue. All three were banned from the platform for five years.

Prediction markets, which let users trade contracts on the outcomes of future events, have faced growing scrutiny over insider trading and possible violations of gambling laws. Kalshi and Polymarket, the two largest platforms, have pledged to introduce stricter controls and crack down on unlawful activity.

Lawmakers offer reasons for insider trades

Moran said in a statement on X that he placed his wager to test Kalshi's procedures and see how the platform would respond to insider trading.

“YES, I did bet ~$100 on myself on Kalshi because I wanted to get caught,” he said, adding that he “wanted to see (1) if Kalshi would come after me and (2) what their path would be.”

Wired for War: Israel’s Black Cube and the infiltration of Europe

Israeli spies-for-hire interfered in elections in Cyprus and Slovenia

Political hit-jobs in Cyprus and Slovenia are just the tip of an election interference iceberg in Europe, involving a dark nexus of Israeli spies, defense chiefs, and tech companies. The threat is real, but the EU is staying silent

Targeting the EU: Israeli spy firm’s open admission

A week after Cyprus assumed the EU’s rotating presidency in January, a video appeared on social media – from a relatively obscure account named 'Emily Thompson – showing President Nikos Christodoulides’s brother-in-law, a former energy minister, and a major construction magnate discussing influence-peddling arrangements between Christodoulides and foreign investors. Across a series of surreptitious recordings, the three also allege that Christodoulides took cash bribes during his 2023 campaign, and was taking cash to block EU sanctions against Russian business figures.

video

https://twitter.com/i/status/2009242544262045697

Cypriot authorities immediately declared that the video bears all “the characteristics of organized Russian disinformation campaigns.” Anonymous EU diplomats told Euractiv that Brussels viewed Moscow as the prime suspect, and authorities in Nicosia said that they had reached out to the US and Israel for assistance in identifying the video’s source. AP and Euronews headlined likely Russian involvement.

The release of the video undermined Christodoulides – triggering the resignations of his most senior aide and his charity director wife – and put a black mark on Cyprus’ stint at the helm of the EU.

The ‘Videogate’ scandal simmered in the background until last week, when Black Cube, an Israeli private intelligence agency, admitted that it had recorded and edited the video. The company said that it had compiled the video on behalf of a private client – not a state actor – and that it “has cooperated with the Cypriot authorities and expresses confidence that they will establish the truth and bring those responsible to justice.”

What is Black Cube?

Founded in 2011 by “veterans of Israel’s elite intelligence units,” Black Cube describes itself as “the world’s leading human intelligence firm,” capable of finding “hard evidence otherwise impossible to obtain” in support of “high-profile litigations, arbitrations, and white-collar crime cases.”

The term ‘Human Intelligence’, or ‘HUMINT’, is key here. Unlike open-source intelligence (OSINT), which relies on uncovering publicly-available information, HUMINT is gathered through covert surveillance, interrogation, and the management of sources and informers through bribery, blackmail, or intimidation. It is the kind of illegal or quasi-legal tradecraft usually practiced by state intelligence agencies.

Black Cube co-founders Dan Zorella and Avi Yanus are veterans of this underworld. Zorella served in the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) military intelligence directorate, and Yanus was a strategic planning officer in the IDF. The company’s board is a who’s who of the Israeli intelligence and defense establishment, and includes:

Meir Dagan (now deceased), former Mossad director

Efraim Halevy, former Mossad director

Yohanan Danino, former Israeli Police commissioner

Major General Giora Eiland, former Israeli National Security Council chief

Asher Tishler, dean of the College of Management Academic Studies, and consultant to the IDF

Black Cube’s client list is long and controversial. The company was hired by US President Donald Trump’s aides in 2018 to undermine the Iran Nuclear Deal; worked for then-president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Joseph Kabila, to spy on his political opponents; and spied on journalists investigating NSO Group – another Mossad-linked Israeli tech company, best known for its ‘Pegasus’ spyware.

Lebanon accuses Israel of war crimes after another journalist killed

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam says attacks on media workers have become an established pattern, not isolated incidents

Lebanon has accused Israel of war crimes after a reporter for a Lebanese newspaper was killed on Wednesday in a strike on a house in the southern village of al-Tiri, where she had taken cover after an earlier attack targeted the vehicle she was traveling in.

Amal Khalil, a reporter for Al-Akhbar, was killed in the strike and her colleague Zeinab Faraj seriously wounded. Rescuers were initially unable to recover Khalil’s body because Israeli fire forced them to halt their efforts for hours.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the attack amounted to a war crime, arguing that Israel’s strikes on journalists could no longer be dismissed as isolated incidents.

“Targeting journalists, obstructing access to them by relief teams, and even targeting their locations again after these teams arrive constitute clearly defined war crimes,” he wrote in a post on X. “Lebanon will spare no effort in pursuing these crimes before the competent international forums.”

Lebanese Information Minister Paul Morcos said the killing of journalists was “a crime and a flagrant violation of international and humanitarian law.” The attack came despite a much-touted ceasefire, with Israel still operating in occupied parts of southern Lebanon, keeping troops in an expanded security zone, barring many residents from returning, and reserving the right to fire on what it says are imminent threats.

The Israel Defense Forces denied targeting journalists and said the incident was under review. The IDF claimed that people in the vehicles posed an “imminent threat” to Israeli troops after crossing the unilaterally declared Forward Defense Line in the occupied part of Lebanon.

The killing is the latest in a string of attacks on media workers. On March 28, an Israeli strike on a clearly marked press car in southern Lebanon killed Al-Manar correspondent Ali Shoeib, Al-Mayadeen reporter Fatima Ftouni, and video journalist Mohammed Ftouni. Israel claimed Shoeib was a Hezbollah intelligence operative, but provided no evidence.

Al-Manar TV journalist Hussain Hamood was killed in an Israeli strike on Nabatieh on March 25, while Lebanese radio presenter Ghada Dayekh was killed when an Israeli strike hit her home in Tyre on April 8.

RT correspondent Steve Sweeney and cameraman Ali Rida Sbeity were also wounded on March 19 while filming near Al-Qasmiya Bridge in southern Lebanon. An Israeli aircraft fired at their filming position despite their visible press markings, and Sweeney later described the strike as a “deliberate, targeted attack.”

Khalil’s death brought the number of journalists killed in Lebanon this year to at least nine, according to AP. Lebanese authorities say more than 2,300 civilians have been killed since the latest escalation began, including at least 254 women and 168 children, after Israel launched its combat operations in Lebanon, where the militant group Hezbollah is based, amid the wider US-Israeli war against Iran.

Amnesty Bill Author Admits It Is for ‘Big Business to Have Cheap Labor.’

Representative Maria Salazar (R-FL) has admitted that her proposed “Dignidad” (Dignity) mass amnesty bill is in large part about “help[ing] big business to have cheap labor.”

Florida Republican Rep. Maria Salazar is promoting her Dignidad (Dignity) mass amnesty bill as a solution to labor shortages, confirming at a Wednesday press conference in Washingston, D.C.: “When people tell me that I am trying to help big business to have cheap labor, I’m going to answer them: It’s not [just] big business; it’s not only agricultural or construction or hospitality or health care or manufacturing—it’s more.” The bill would grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants and block deportations.

Salazar suggested the Dignidad amnesty would lower costs by driving down wages, arguing, “Americans want affordability, and they want affordable vegetables and fruits.” Notably, regularizing millions of illegals and giving them the right to work would likely have a particular impact on the job opportunities and pay for younger and lower-skilled Americans, at a time when goals such as getting on the property ladder are already increasingly out of reach.

The President is a very smart guy. He comes from hospitality and from construction. Do I have to tell him that those [migrants] are needed [in] those five sectors, construction, hospitality, agriculture, health care, and manufacturing?” – Rep. Salazar

Salazar’s amnesty would dramatically undermine the “mass deportations” pledge President Donald J. Trump ran on in 2024, putting the interests of illegals and big business ahead of American workers. Notably, the Wednesday press conference was organized by a subsidiary of the American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC), whose executive director, Rebecca Shi, is a Chinese immigrant. Shi, whose mother was subject to a deportation order for 19 years, stated openly at the conference, “Work permits for long-term immigrants lower costs.”

Sam Altman’s World ID Expands Biometric Identity Checks

Eighteen million scanned irises in, the company has found its real business model: charging advertisers a premium for verified eyeballs.

A biometric identity system built on iris scans is expanding into mainstream online services while its backers outline new ways to tie verified identity to revenue generation.

The initiative, led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, introduced its standalone World ID app in public beta on April 17. The app separates identity management from the existing World App crypto wallet and is described as a tool to “verify with platforms and services, manage your authenticators, store credentials and control how your World ID is used.”

The rollout comes as the organization reports more than 18 million people across 160 countries have already been verified using its Orb devices, which scan a person’s iris to create a unique identifier.

Deployment of Orb devices is increasing, with additional coverage planned across New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. An “Orb-on-demand” service is also being introduced, allowing individuals to schedule iris scans at locations of their choosing.

This approach extends biometric collection into more varied settings. Greater accessibility may encourage uptake, though it also increases the number of environments where highly sensitive biological data is captured.

At a recent event, the organization described its broader ambition as embedding its verification tech across the internet, stating the goal is to get its “proof-of-human” system into “every website and app” on the open internet.

A wider push toward digital ID checks

The expansion aligns with a broader movement across the tech sector toward routine identity verification. Platforms are introducing checks framed around safety, fraud prevention, and authenticity, gradually normalizing the idea that access to services may require proof of identity rather than anonymous or pseudonymous participation.

World’s model places biometric verification at the forefront of this trend. By tying a persistent identifier to a person’s physical characteristics, the system enables repeated checks across different services without requiring separate verification processes each time.

This creates a form of continuity across platforms. While presented as a way to reduce bots and misuse, it also consolidates identity into a reusable credential that can follow individuals across contexts, limiting the ability to compartmentalize online activity.

Revenue model tied to identity verification

The company’s financial framing links this identity layer directly to monetization.

According to its own materials, World ID could increase average revenue per user by improving trust signals and conversion rates. A central proposal involves offering a “verified human” tier to advertisers, with higher pricing based on confirmed human impressions.

The company states that “advertisers whose conversions come from verified humans can better measure their marketing ROI, which justifies sustained or increased spend,” and that “an ad network that can prove its impressions reach real people will command the budgets.”

Alabama Police Charge Girls Basketball Coach With 32 Sex Crimes

A former Alabama high school girls’ basketball coach faces 32 criminal counts tied to alleged sexual offenses with a student.

Cullman County authorities arrested Paige Adams, 35, on Tuesday following a 32-count grand jury indictment, CBS 42 reported. The charges include one count alleging she engaged in a sex act with a student, one count of sexual contact with a student under 19, and 30 counts of distributing obscene material to a student.

“This 32-count grand jury indictment speaks for itself,” Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker told CBS 42.

Court records made public Wednesday show Adams allegedly transmitted obscene material to the student at least 28 times between Feb. 13 and March 9, CBS 42 reported. On two occasions March 16, she allegedly asked the student to send her sexually explicit material.

Rep. Lauren Boebert & Rep. Eric Burlison: They’re Spying on Gun Owners, and Congress Has Until April 30 to Do Something About It

Congress just bought itself one week to get this right. Don’t waste them.

Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is sold as a tool to spy on foreign terrorists. What surveillance hawks leave out is that when a foreign target — who can be virtually anyone — communicates with an American, those messages get swept into the database too. No warrant. No notice. And then the CIA, NSA, and FBI search through those private communications using Americans’ names, emails, and other identifiers — and no warrant is required for that either.

These “queries” for Americans’ information is what we call “backdoor searches,” and it is central to the raging fight over whether to reauthorize FISA. A federal court called it unconstitutional. The searches keep happening anyway.

Now add artificial intelligence to that picture. The government can now train AI on information about your constitutionally protected activity, from what you buy to what websites you visit to where you sleep at night, all based on information purchased from data brokers without any court or law authorizing agencies to do so. The Cato Institute has documented how AI tools are being used to generate the legal justifications for initiating surveillance in the first place — the government is using algorithms to write its own permission slips.

As Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) noted in introducing their bipartisan FISA reform bill, “advances in technology, from AI to the explosion of Americans’ data available for purchase, have far outpaced the laws protecting Americans’ privacy.”

These are two of the most critical sticking points in the ongoing FISA fight — the backdoor search and data broker loopholes. A bipartisan blob is fighting to keep the status quo, and a bipartisan team of strange bedfellows, including ourselves, are standing up for reform.

US Blocks Regular $500 Million Cash Pallets Flown To Iraq, Over Pro-Iran Militias

In confirmation of some early reporting we featured at the start of this week, The Wall Street Journal has verified something that Iraqi officials themselves were denying just days ago: the US is blocking Iraq's regular dollar shipments in order to pressure it's Iran-backed militias.

"The Trump administration has suspended U.S. dollar shipments to Iraq and frozen security cooperation programs with its military, escalating the pressure on Baghdad to dismantle powerful Iranian-backed militias," said Iraqi and US officials interviewed in the report.

Pallets of cash and the Middle East should ring familiar, stretching from the Bush-Cheney years to even the Obama years (and Iran sanctions relief as part of the original nuclear deal). In this case, like with the Obama/Iran deal saga before, this is actually Iraq's own oil revenue money.

In this latest case, a US military plane carrying a half-billion dollars has been delayed on its regularly scheduled delivery.

"A cargo-plane delivery of nearly $500 million in U.S. banknotes, the proceeds from Iraqi oil sales from Federal Reserve Bank of New York accounts, was blocked recently by Treasury Department officials because of U.S. concerns about the militias," WSJ continues, citing the officials.

The publication details, "It was the second scheduled shipment of dollars to the Central Bank of Iraq delayed by the U.S. since the start of the Iran war in late February, the U.S. and Iraqi officials said."

During the height of the March fighting between Iran and Israel, several American facilities across Iraq came under attack, even including the US Embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone. Typically these were drones, or rocket fire, and Erbil and northern Iraq in particular came under heavy fire.

To review from the backgrounder we previously featured: since 2003, a decision issued by Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) head Paul Bremer has required that all Iraqi oil revenues be paid into an account at the US Federal Reserve Bank of New York, giving the US the ability to control how many US dollars are returned to the CBI.

From that point until today, the Iraqi Ministry of Finance has had to submit funding requests to the US Treasury, which then approves or denies them based on its own criteria.

This monthly transfer of US dollars, flown into Baghdad in pallets of hard cash, determines Iraq's ability to pay for basic needs such as salaries, food, and medicine.

'Shame, disgrace': Israeli diplomat in US heckled at Silicon Valley Memorial Day ceremony

A group of attendees began singing the Israeli national anthem in protest as Ambassador Marco Sermoneta denounced critics of the IDF and the State of Israel.

The event, which was primarily attended by Israeli expatriates, took an unexpected turn when his speech was met with loud protests. As Sermoneta denounced critics of the IDF and the State of Israel, calling their actions harmful to the Jewish state and the safety of Jews globally, members of the audience interrupted his address with chants of “shame” and “disgrace,” alongside loud whistles.

A group of attendees even began singing the Israeli national anthem, Hatikvah, in protest. The disturbance created a tense atmosphere during the ceremony, which had already been affected by heavy rain, prompting some attendees to watch the event from home. Despite the outbursts, Sermoneta continued with his speech, but faced immediate backlash for ignoring the disruption.

Ofir Gutlzon, a longtime Silicon Valley resident and leader of the "Unacceptable" movement, condemned the incident. "What angered us was the cynical exploitation of the official occasion, by virtue of his role as our consul, for political agenda purposes," said Gutlzon.

"It is unacceptable for an official representative of the State of Israel to represent the political agenda of the government and not be national, especially when there are bereaved families in the audience," Gutlzon added.

One in Seven Vaccinated People Report a Serious Adverse Event, MHRA Report Finds – But the Cover-Up Continues

One in seven. That is the proportion of people in the MHRA’s own actively recruited surveillance cohort who reported a medically serious adverse reaction following Covid vaccination. Over half reported at least one reaction of any kind. The data were collected between 2020 and 2022. They were not published until September 2025, and only then because Cheryl Grainger, through an FOI request and subsequent ICO appeal, forced it out.

The paper that eventually appeared, in the journal Drug Safety, was not written as a safety paper. It was written as a description of the digital platform used to collect the data — a methods paper published five months after Dame June Raine left as chief executive, nearly three years after the data were locked. The actual adverse reaction rates are reported but not analysed. The one stratification that could determine whether those rates are real was not performed.

The numbers buried inside it deserved rather more attention.

What the data show

The YCVM was the MHRA’s premium data source. It was one of four pillars of its Covid vaccine safety surveillance strategy. Unlike the passive Yellow Card scheme, where people report voluntarily and sporadically, the YCVM actively recruited individuals and followed them up at set intervals. The MHRA itself described it as a tool to “rapidly detect, confirm, characterise and quantify new risks”.

Of the 30,281 individuals who reported receiving a vaccination, 15,764 (52.1%) reported at least one adverse reaction. 4,134 (13.7%) reported a reaction classified as medically serious under the MedDRA system. This is a regulatory classification that includes events deemed medically significant by an internal MHRA panel and is broader than the lay meaning of “serious”, but not a trivial threshold. It encompasses hospitalisation, disability, life-threatening outcomes and death, but also other events judged clinically important.

However, the 13.7% might include people who volunteered for the monitor because they had been injured. The MHRA did not exclude people signing up after they had their vaccine.

The key question is how representative this cohort was. Any voluntary cohort, even an actively recruited one, may over-represent people who experienced problems. Other active surveillance systems internationally have reported lower rates, though none has been free of similar methodological limitations. The true rate is unknown – which is precisely the problem.

The YCVM was meant to be designed to quantify risk in a way passive surveillance could not because of reporting bias. However, the key simple analysis to enable interpretation was not done. The question is not whether 13.7% is the true rate of serious harm. The question is why the MHRA did not do the work to find out what the true rate is.

Air defenses activated in Tehran against ‘hostile targets’; Katz: Israel awaiting US green light to resume strikes

IDF uncovers Hezbollah tunnel beneath clothing store near Metula, as Lebanon reports drone strike beyond Yellow Line; Katz says Israel awaits US approval to resume strikes, warning a 'deadly' attack could topple Iran’s regime

Air defense systems were heard engaging what were described as “hostile targets” in parts of the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Thursday, Iran’s Mehr news agency reported, after earlier reports that air defense batteries had been activated in the city. An IDF official said Israel was not carrying out strikes in Iran.

Earlier, Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel is “waiting for a green light from the United States — first and foremost to complete the elimination of the Khamenei dynasty and return Iran to the dark ages by striking its main energy and electricity facilities and destroying its national economic infrastructure.”

Katz made the remarks following a security assessment at Israel’s military headquarters in Tel Aviv with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and other senior defense officials. “Israel is prepared to renew the war against Iran,” he said. “The IDF is ready in both defense and offense, and the targets are identified.”

He described Iran’s leadership as weakened, saying it “specializes mainly in internal repression of its population through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Basij,” while threatening global oil prices. “Its leaders are hiding in tunnels and struggling to communicate and make decisions. Its skies are wide open, and all its national infrastructure and strategic facilities are exposed to attack — yet it declares victory,” Katz said.

He added that, like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, Iran’s leadership “does not care about the heavy price paid by the civilian population — only about personal survival, which is not guaranteed.” He warned that any future attack “will be different and deadly, delivering devastating blows in the most sensitive places, continuing the severe blows already suffered by the Iranian regime, shaking and collapsing its foundations.”

After more than two and a half years of fighting, IDF forces have uncovered a Hezbollah underground command center about 25 meters (roughly 80 feet) deep beneath a clothing store in the southern Lebanese village of al-Khiam, about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the Israeli town of Metula.

'Territory expands, army doesn’t': IDF faces deepening troop shortage crisis

'Unthinkable,' a security official says of the deepening IDF crisis, with no end in sight; coalition delays key legislation as ultra-Orthodox leaders weigh the draft bill, amid warnings defenses 'will not be airtight' if conditions change

Since October 2023, when the war broke out, the IDF have steadily expanded the territory under their control. It began in the Gaza Strip, continued in Syria and the West Bank, and now includes a large area in Lebanon. All of this requires troops — even as mandatory service is expected to be shortened in about six months.

At the political level, which has pledged “at the request of the chief of staff” to pass a package of laws extending compulsory service — while also exempting tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox men from enlistment — progress has stalled. Despite the promises, discussions are unlikely to take place next week as well.

Where things stand today

About a month ago, IDF spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin presented what he described as a troubling picture: the military needs about 15,000 additional soldiers, including roughly 8,000 combat troops. Under these conditions, the physical deployment of forces has shifted significantly. More and more combat soldiers have been assigned to missions controlling buffer zones — in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza. With the standing army stretched to its limits, reservists are filling the gaps.

Military officials say there is currently a shortfall of about 12,000 troops, but 15,000 are needed to prevent a larger gap in the future, including thousands of combat soldiers. According to military estimates, if compulsory service is not extended, the number needed could rise to 17,000.
