‘I’m burning’: Lebanese reporter recounts colleague’s last words after Israeli strike

Wounded Lebanese journalist Zeinab Faraj has described the Israeli strike that killed her colleague Amal Khalil, prompting Beirut to accuse West Jerusalem of war crimes.

In an interview filmed from her hospital bed, Faraj broke down in tears as she recounted the ordeal and her final moments with Khalil.

On Wednesday, Khalil and Faraj were driving through the southern village of al-Tiri when an Israeli drone struck a car ahead of them.

“Completely silently, a missile hit that car. Amal screamed and abruptly turned to the side of the road. We got out of the car and covered under an entrance of some garage,” Faraj told Lebanese Al-Afdal News. Adding that Israeli aircraft were circling overhead along with drones before another missile struck Khalil’s car. Khalil was wounded by shrapnel, and as the vehicle caught fire, her back began burning as she shielded Faraj.

“She told me: ‘Zeinab, I’m burning!’ I grabbed her by her jacket and pulled her toward me,” she recalled. “I couldn’t endure it anymore, I was starting to burn too… I broke the garage door, and Amal and I started crawling inside.”

The pair later hid in a bathroom. Faraj said time passed before she nodded off, with Khalil beside her. “We both lost hope… I woke up just as a missile was coming straight down at us and all I remember is the last moment I saw Amal – when I realized Amal was gone,” she said.

Colleagues said both were wearing gear clearly marked as press. Emergency workers pulled Faraj, who was seriously wounded, from the rubble, but efforts to reach Khalil were delayed after Israeli forces reportedly fired on rescue teams. Her body was recovered hours later.

The strike came despite a ceasefire reached earlier this month, with Israeli military still operating in occupied parts of southern Lebanon and reserving the right to attack what it labels threats.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of the “deliberate and consistent targeting of journalists” to “conceal the truth of its aggressive acts against Lebanon,” while Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called the attack a “war crime.”

Incoming Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has appointed the country’s “first LGBT activist” as education minister, according to local media.

The Tisza Party leader, who defeated Viktor Orban’s Fidesz earlier this month, unveiled 12 cabinet ministers in a Facebook post on Friday as he prepares to form a new government.

Judit Lannert was named minister of education and child care affairs, despite expectations that Rita Rubovszky, the headmistress of a Cistercian Catholic school, would take the role. Lannert is known as a critic of the previous government, with the media noting her use of LGBTQ-themed colors on social media during debates over constitutional amendments under Orban.

The move came a day after a proposal to launch an LGBTQ-themed TV channel was submitted to Hungary’s media regulator, according to Magyar Nemzet.

Under Orban, Hungary introduced limits on LGBTQ-related content for minors. A 2021 child protection law, adopted alongside measures against pedophilia, restricted how gender and sexuality topics can be presented in schools and media.

At the time, Orban said the legislation ensured that parents retain authority over their children’s sexual education, calling it a defense of national sovereignty against Western liberal influence.

Nine days after Orban’s election defeat, the European Court of Justice ruled that the reforms violate EU law, ordering Hungary to roll back the restrictions on promoting homosexuality and gender transition in the media for minors. The court said the measures “stigmatize and marginalize LGBTQ individuals” and violate human dignity and freedom of expression.

US denying green cards over ‘anti-Semitic’ claims – NYT

Taking part in pro-Palestinian protests and criticizing Israel online can reportedly be seen as disqualifying factors

US green card applicants could be rejected for criticizing Israel and taking part in pro-Palestinian protests, the New York Times reported on Saturday, citing internal Department of Homeland Security training materials. The guidance is reportedly part of the administration’s broader effort to vet applicants for ‘anti-American’ and ‘anti-Semitic’ views.

In instructions to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reviewed by the newspaper, the administration treats participation in pro-Palestinian protests and public criticism of Israel as “overwhelmingly negative” factors when deciding on permanent residency applications.

According to the document, immigration officers have been instructed to deny applicants found to have a history of “endorsing, promoting or supporting anti-American views” or “antisemitic terrorism, ideologies or groups.”

The materials include criticism of Israel as a potentially disqualifying factor, citing social media posts declaring “Stop Israeli terror in Palestine” and showing the Israeli flag crossed out as examples of questionable speech. They also reference images depicting a map of Israel with the country’s name crossed out and replaced with ‘Palestine’ as anti-Semitic.

Immigration officers are also instructed to “focus particularly on aliens who engaged in on-campus anti-American and antisemitic activities,” including those who took part in pro-Palestinian protests at universities following the 2023 Hamas attack against Israel.

Desecration of the US flag is also listed as a negative factor, despite the Supreme Court ruling that flag burning is protected under the First Amendment.

According to the White House spokeswoman, as cited by the NYT, the policies have “nothing to do with free speech” but are meant to protect “American institutions, the safety of citizens, national security and the freedoms of the US.”

Last August, the USCIS said immigrants applying for benefits such as green cards would be screened for “anti-American” behavior, including whether they have supported or expressed views linked to anti-American or terrorist groups, including those tied to anti-Semitic terrorism.

CNN reported at the time, citing a State Department official, that over 6,000 student visas had been revoked since the beginning of 2025. Earlier this year, the WSJ reported that in 2025, the number of people leaving the US exceeded those entering, marking the first net outflow since 1935.

Syria is set to launch the first trials of prominent figures from the ousted government of former President Bashar Assad, the country’s Justice Ministry has announced.

In a post on X, the ministry said proceedings would begin with cases tied to Daraa – where the protest movement that later spiraled into civil war began – framing the move as a key step toward accountability.

Protests began in Daraa following the arrest and alleged torture of 15 students accused of writing anti-government slogans amid the broader Arab Spring uprisings. Demonstrations turned deadly when security forces opened fire, escalating into a nationwide revolt that became the 13-year Syrian Civil War, killing more than half a million people.

A Moscow- and Ankara-brokered truce in 2020 put an end to major fighting for nearly four years. But in late 2024, a rebel coalition led by jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an Al-Qaeda offshoot, launched a swift 11-day offensive that toppled Assad, installing a transitional government under HTS chief Ahmed al-Sharaa, which has since sought to reassert control over a country fractured by war and foreign intervention, including by the US.

“The Criminal Court in Damascus is preparing for the moment long awaited by victims: the launch of public trials next week for the henchmen and criminals of the fallen [Assad] regime,” Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais said on X on Saturday. “The first trials for the henchmen of the defunct regime will focus on the events of Daraa. Just as the beginning was in Daraa, the cradle of the revolution, justice demands that it also serve as the launchpad for the path of transitional justice.”

Media reports citing officials say trials will begin on Sunday with Assad’s cousin, Atif Najib, former political security chief in Daraa, who is widely blamed for the crackdown that sparked the civil war. Proceedings are also expected to include Wassim al-Assad, another cousin accused of drug trafficking and leading a paramilitary group linked to extrajudicial killings and the suppression of protesters, and Amjad Youssef, a former military intelligence major accused of overseeing the execution of at least 288 civilians in Damascus’ Tadamon district in 2013.

Veteran US diplomat John M. Barrett has arrived in Caracas to serve as chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Venezuela, the mission announced Thursday, marking a new phase in Washington's diplomatic presence in Venezuela, and after a US military raid on Jan.3 ousted and captured longtime leader Nicolás Maduro.

Barrett is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, and he was tapped by the Trump admin for role in April after most recently serving as chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Guatemala.

His arrival forms part of President Trump's stated three-phase plan to "restore democracy" in Venezuela, with the chargé d’affaires acting as the top US representative in the absence of a Senate-confirmed ambassador.

It must be recalled that it was actually the Director of the CIA who was the first top Trump admin official to visit post-Maduro Caracas and warmly shake hands with new leader, then-Vice President Delcy Rodríguez.

Ironically she had long been among the most staunchly socialist officials within the Chavista regime of Maduro, and her being accepted by Washington shows there was not actual regime change on any institutional level, just the tapping of a more pliant US puppet.

Various reports review that before his posting in Guatemala, Barrett served from 2023 to 2025 as deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Panama.

"The relationship between the United States and Venezuela will shape the future of our hemisphere. My name is John Barrett, and I have just arrived in Venezuela to serve as charge d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas," Barrett said in a newly video published introducing himself and the new role by the embassy on social media.

"President Trump and Secretary Rubio have a clear vision for the prosperity of our region, and I am here to continue implementing their three-phase plan for Venezuela. We remain committed to Venezuela," he added.

His prior diplomatic roles include serving as counselor for economic affairs at the US Embassy in Peru and as consul general in Recife, where he led US diplomatic engagement across eight northeastern states.

The national security news outlet The High Side reports that the FBI is worried about the theft of these drones, as experts warn of "ridiculously bad" consequences and "a potential nightmare scenario" if bad actors weaponize these low-cost flying machines.

"The bureau is freaked out for a good reason," Steve Lazarus, a retired FBI agent, told the local outlet.

Lazarus continued, "These aren't hobby drones with cameras. They're industrial sprayers designed to carry and disperse significant amounts of liquid quickly and with precision. A typical agricultural drone can cover a large area in minutes, following GPS-guided paths — that's exactly what they're built for in farming, but it also means that, in the wrong hands, they're a ready-made delivery system."

While The High Side and investigators are "spooked" by the theft and the mounting risk that these drones could be used to "disperse biological agents," the greater threat is actually their payload capacity and the potential for these drones to be weaponized into low-cost, one-way attack drones.

The assessment we provided at the beginning of the note is that the glaring gap in layered air defenses against small drones in high-value areas will only open the door to advanced, low-cost solutions, such as passive acoustic counter-drone detection, outlined here. Some of these C-UAS systems may soon be imported from companies that currently have deployments in Ukraine.

A Data Center Is Getting a $77 Million Tax Break. It Promises to Create 1 Job.

The type of tax break given to the JPMorganChase data center was designed to attract companies that bring steady jobs.

On a February morning in 2024, a little-known agency in Rockland County held a public hearing on a proposed subsidy for the expansion of a JPMorganChase data center in Orangeburg, near the New Jersey border. In return for nearly $77 million in tax breaks, the project promised to create exactly one permanent job.

No one showed up. After 20 minutes of silence, an agency official called the meeting to a close. Two weeks later, the subsidy deal was approved.

The kind of tax breaks JPMorganChase received, doled out by local agencies called industrial development agencies, were designed first and foremost to attract companies that bring steady jobs. Data centers — which require major investment but few workers — call that premise into question.

Perhaps no project raises the question as starkly as JPMorganChase’s data center expansion in Orangeburg. The $77 million subsidy is the largest of its kind, per job, in the country, according to watchdog groups. That figure represents sales taxes that JPMorganChase would otherwise be paying on materials and equipment for the billion-dollar project, with about half — $40 million — withheld from state coffers and the rest from localities.

“The county is giving away quite a lot of public money in exchange basically for nothing,” said Kasia Tarczynska, senior research analyst at the national subsidy watchdog group Good Jobs First.

Last month, the outlet Investigative Post reported that the per-job subsidies proposed for a massive data center in Genesee County, at more than $11 million, would be the largest in the country. The project has spurred local outrage and a bill from state lawmakers to rein in the tax breaks.

But the JPMorganChase deal quietly signed two years ago dwarfs even that amount.

The Rockland County IDA believes the deal will pay off. Executive director Steven Porath provided a cost-benefit analysis to New York Focus that found the data center would be a net gain for the county, yielding more than $100 million in local economic benefits.

Porath acknowledged that data centers — and JPMorganChase’s expansion in particular — create few permanent jobs, but said the project would generate more than 1,400 temporary construction jobs and require ongoing upgrades from skilled union electricians and other tradespeople.

“It’s a misconception to say there’s one person sitting in that data center,” he said.

Moreover, Porath said that assessing subsidies strictly in terms of cost per job is an “outdated” method that needs to evolve for today’s high-tech age.

“Anybody would look at it and say, one job does not justify $76 million in sales tax exemption,” he said. “If that is how you’re going to narrowly look at it… anybody would say that’s ridiculous. But that doesn’t take into account all the other economic factors of that data center sitting in our community.”

Police in Northern Ireland Declare Security Alert after Suspected Car Bombing

Police in Northern Ireland have declared a security alert in the town of Dunmurry, on the outskirts of Belfast, after reports that a car bomb exploded near a police station.

Homes in the vicinity have been evacuated and members of the public are advised to avoid the area, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said on Sunday.

“It is distressing and disturbing to wake up to the news that a car bomb exploded outside Dunmurry police station last night,” said Sorcha Eastwood, a member of the U.K. Parliament who represents the Langan Valley, southwest of Belfast.

“A busy area, a car bomb left outside residential housing, small businesses and any number of people out and about on a Saturday night working or socialising,” she said. “It is only through the grace of God that there are no casualties.”

Police have released no information about the motive for the attack.

Last month, police said a “crude but viable” improvised bomb was used in an attempted attack on another PSNI station in Lurgan, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Dunmurry.

Two masked men stopped a delivery driver, placed the device in the trunk of his car and forced him at gunpoint to take the device to the police station, according to authorities. Police carried out a controlled explosion after about 100 homes were evacuated.

Police said it was likely that the Lurgan attack was carried out by dissident Republican groups in a “pathetic attempt to remain relevant and provoke fear.”

The 1998 Good Friday Accords largely ended decades of violence between Republican groups opposed to British rule and those who want to maintain the region’s ties to the United Kingdom. Dissident groups that oppose the peace process still carry out sporadic attacks.

A North Carolina school board is refusing to protect female students in bathrooms and locker rooms, despite months of concerns from students and parents.

Trista Ruck, a junior at Cox Mill High School in Cabarrus County, addressed the Cabarrus County School Board in December of 2025 and asked them to create a policy defending female-only spaces at the school. At Ruck’s school, a male student identifying as a woman is on the football and basketball cheer team and uses women’s locker rooms and restrooms.

“Many of my peers and I feel uncomfortable using facilities designed for women and women alone, as he has different reproductive parts than we do,” Ruck said.

Israeli Troops Say Mass Looting of Occupied Southern Lebanon ‘Routine’

South of the newly-established Yellow Line, Israel has established de facto military occupation of over 50 Lebanese municipalities, and has been demolishing homes and preventing the return to displaced locals. The destruction goes deeper than that, however.

A new report from Israel’s Haaretz quotes numerous Israeli soldiers within southern Lebanon saying that the looting of civilian property from homes in the area has become “wide-spread” and “routine” and that commanders are making no serious effort to try to prevent it.

Soldiers cited troops taking motorcycles, televisions, even sofas, out of private homes and loading them on military vehicles and bringing them back across the border into Israel. “Everyone sees it and understands it” one was quoted as saying.

Though the IDF responded to the Haaretz report by claiming that it conducts inspections at the border and takes disciplinary action when necessary, the soldiers suggested that virtually never happens. Indeed, only some of the border crossings even have checkpoints in which to inspect looted cargo in the first place. At most, some commanders tell their soldiers to “stop looting” but have taken no action to really enforce that order. Others simply let it go.

“When there is no punishment, the message is obvious,” one of the soldiers added. Another said he thought if military police jailed anyone for the looting it would stop pretty quickly. So far the indication is that’s not happening.

Other soldiers suggested that the reason looting is happening with such impunity is that the IDF is engaged in wiping out many of those towns and villages, and the sense is “What difference does it make if I take it? It’s going to be destroyed anyway.”

Mass looting was similarly reported in Gaza, according to Haaretz, and in the course of that, only one indictment ever happened, which was ultimately settled with a plea deal.

The Philadelphia pediatric surgeon, Dr. Ala Stanford, who is running for the open seat in Pennsylvania’s 3rd congressional district, has denied receiving any funds from AIPAC.

“That’s not me… I did not accept money from AIPAC,” Stanford said at an event in late March when confronted about previous reporting that the super political action committee (PAC) supporting her, the 314 Action Fund, had acted as a secret pass-through for AIPAC in previous elections.

But following a new report published by Drop Site News on Thursday, co-founder Ryan Grim said, “We now know this is a flat-out lie.”

A Haaretz investigation reveals how grain stolen from occupied Ukrainian territory has been sold to Israel. The profits of the shady operation are financing Putin's war

On a spring evening two weeks ago, a seemingly typical bulk carrier – a cargo ship that carries unpackaged bulk cargo, such as grain – docked at the Haifa port. From the outside, it appeared to be just one of many ships arriving to Israel's shores, nothing out of the ordinary.

However, inside the ship lay precious merchandise on its way to the Israeli market. According to an official statement by the Ukrainian government, the ship, Abinsk, was sailing under a Russian flag and bringing millions of dollars' worth of wheat, stolen from territories under Russian occupation. Profits from the selling of this merchandise in markets around the world – including in Israel – has been financing President Vladimir Putin's war machine.

The story of the Abinsk was exposed in the Ukrainian media, resulting in an outcry. The Kyiv government was quick to state that Abinsk may belong to Putin's shadow fleet, and added that it had warned Israel about the ship's cargo in advance.

However, a Haaretz investigative report indicates that this was not the first time that stolen grain from Ukraine has been imported for the Israeli market. In fact, by 2023, about a year after the Russian military's massive invasion of Ukraine, at least two ships carrying stolen grain arrived in Israel, and at least one of them unloaded here, according to documents, an analysis of ship tracking data and satellite images obtained by Haaretz.

The behavior of seven additional ships that have unloaded in Israel that year raise suspicion that they also acted to conceal the source of the grain they were carrying. In addition, internal logs kept by Russian authorities in occupied Ukrainian ports, obtained by Haaretz, list over 30 shipments of stolen goods with Israel as their destination.

Sources who spoke to Haaretz say this is an ongoing pattern. According to information obtained by Haaretz, four shipments of stolen Ukrainian grain have already been unloaded in Israel this year.
