I've used big university telescopes 10 inch reflector, and you can see features on Jupiter and clear rings of Saturn. Saturn looks exactly like an eye.
With a $200 consumer telescope 4" you can see rings of saturn, and just about can see some variation over the disc of Jupiter. And real great moon pictures. You can pick out the depth of the craters and the shimmer of the atmosphere. Mars is a bright orange spot. The color of mars is special. It's a type of orange but you have to see it to appreciate it
