The term "Klanbake" refers to the 1924 Democratic National Convention held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, which lasted 16 days and required 103 ballots to nominate a candidate. The nickname was coined by newspapers to describe the sweltering heat inside the venue and the intense influence of the Ku Klux Klan within the party.
The convention was deeply divided between two front-runners: Al Smith, the Catholic Governor of New York who opposed the Klan, and William Gibbs McAdoo, a Protestant who was backed by the Klan. Delegates failed to pass a platform plank condemning the Klan by a narrow vote (542.85 to 546.15). To celebrate this victory, approximately 20,000 Klansmen gathered in a field in New Jersey across the Hudson River, where they burned crosses and threw baseballs at an effigy of Al Smith.
This internal conflict and the subsequent "Klanbake" notoriety contributed to the Democratic Party's defeat in the 1924 presidential election by incumbent Republican President Calvin Coolidge. The convention ultimately nominated John W. Davis of West Virginia, a compromise candidate who received only 28.8% of the popular vote.

The capirotes worn by penitents (nazarenos) during Spain’s Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions are often mistaken for Ku Klux Klan (KKK) hoods due to their conical shape, but they are unrelated and predating the KKK by centuries.
Origin and Purpose: The capirote originated from the Spanish Inquisition, where convicts were forced to wear pointed hats to shame them; Catholic brotherhoods later adopted the garment in the 17th century as a symbol of anonymous penance and humility.
KKK Connection: The KKK was formed in 1865 after the American Civil War, and its uniform was not standardized until 1915; the KKK likely borrowed the conical hood design from various sources, including the Spanish tradition, rather than the other way around.
Cultural Distinction: While the KKK hood represents racism and white supremacy, the Spanish capirote represents repentance and religious devotion, with robe colors varying by brotherhood (e.g., purple, white, or black) rather than any political ideology
