California plans to share sensitive driver’s license data with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA).
The data will be used by AAMVA’s multi-state system to flag duplicate licenses.
The move is aimed at complying with the federal REAL ID Act.
Over 1 million Californians, including undocumented residents, hold licenses under a
program that shields applicants’ immigration status.
The system includes partial Social Security Numbers or placeholders for those without one.
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office states the system does not contain immigration status or addresses and does not allow bulk searches.
Critics argue that once the data leaves state control, it could be accessed by federal immigration authorities.
The DMV is seeking $55 million to implement the data transfer.
