Waves on Titan
Have you ever thought about surfing on an alien world? We can now expand the search for the perfect wave from Earth to the rest of the Solar System, and beyond. Scientists have developed a new model for simulating waves on other planets. Titan is one of the 274 confirmed moons of Saturn to date, and the only object in the solar system (besides Earth) known to have liquid lakes and seas on its surface. The featured video shows a simulation of waves on Earth (right) and on Titan (left), under the same conditions (the scale marker is in meters). A light breeze would create taller, slower-moving waves on Titan than on Earth, because the lakes there are filled with light liquid hydrocarbons, and because of Titan's low gravity and higher atmospheric pressure. In a couple of years, NASA expects to launch the Dragonfly mission, which will travel for 6 years and send a rotorcraft to explore Titan and study its microbial habitability.

Fireball in the sky reported across Washington, British Columbia, and Oregon
Updated Wed, April 29, 2026 at 9:53 PM
ANACORTES, Wash. — Dozens of people on social media are asking, "What was that?" after seeing something strange falling from the sky overnight.
What some described as a bright flash in the sky early Wednesday morning was reported in parts of the Pacific Northwest.
As of 8 p.m., the American Meteor Society (AMS) had received 135 reports of a fireball seen across Washington, British Columbia, and Oregon.
The AMS classifies a fireball as a "very bright meteor." The event is caused when a small piece of debris in space soars into the Earth's atmosphere typically between 20,000 and 30,000 miles per hour.
When the debris hits the atmosphere it "superheats," according to experts, which then causes the trail of bright, exploding lights people see.
Dr. Chris Laws, a teaching professor of astronomy at the University of Washington, told KOMO News that fireballs are fairly common, but he said they can happen over oceans or in the daylight, so they often go undetected.
"No place on Earth is either safe or particularly likely to get hit," Laws explained.
The astronomical event was recorded on a camera in Anacortes, among other places, at about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday. That video was provided to KOMO News.
It shows a blue-green object falling from the sky before appearing to explode in a flash of bright light.
The green color is common with fireballs, Laws said, because of elements like magnesium and nickel found in the debris.
Laws also confirmed that fireballs are not dangerous because it's very rare debris hits the ground intact.
After KOMO received the video, Meteorologist George Waldenberger immediately started scanning reports from the AMS, which showed that dozens of people had reported seeing a fireball or light.
The Washington locations the reports came from included:
Anacortes
Belfair
Bremerton
Camano
Clinton Spokane
East Wenatchee
Ellensburg
Friday Harbor
Gig Harbor
Hockinson
Liberty Lake
Mount Vernon
Oak Harbor
Olympia
Port Orchard
Roche Harbor
Rosburg
Seabeck
Seattle
Sequim
Spokane
Tieton
The reports said the event lasted from 1.5 to 7.5 seconds, but most estimated it as 3.5.
Waldenberger said what was seen was likely a meteor, which can explode and break apart as it falls and make a larger flash. Some people on Reddit even reported hearing sounds during the phenomenon.
At some point, the AMS will verify what exactly people saw. The AMS will also likely be able to analyze where in space the debris came from, how high up in Earth's atmosphere the debris blew up, and the actual path of the meteor.

President Trump hosts Artemis II Astronauts at White House and Artemis goes to NYSE
Posted 4:53 PM, Apr 29, 2026
The visit by the four Moonfarers comes weeks after their ten-day lunar flyby.
President Trump hosted the crew of Artemis II at the White House Wednesday, more than two weeks after they completed their historic lunar flyby mission.
"We have some people that have captivated the attention of the whole world, not just our country, the whole world, and they're very brave. And that was a lot of rocket under them. I never saw anything like that," President Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday.
The four-person team broke the record for the farthest distance traveled from Earth during their ten-day trip around the Moon.
"We're very proud of these people," the president added. "They have unbelievable courage."
When asked whether he thought America would send another astronaut to walk on the moon the President expressed optimism.
"Well, we have a shot at it. I mean, we don't like to say definitely, because then you say, 'Oh, we failed. We failed,' because we're I think we could say we're ahead of schedule.
So we have a — we have a good shot. We've authorized it. And I think with this team, and you know, with Jared has done such an amazing job at NASA, I think we have a good shot,” Trump said.
"We're back in the business of launching Moon rockets with frequency," said NASA Administrator Jared Issacson. "We're going to launch Artemis III in 2027. We'll protect for up for two opportunities in 2028 to return astronauts to the surface."
The distance covered during Artemis II’s voyage was not the only historic part of their journey. Each of the four crew members enshrined their own place in space travel history.
Commander Reid Weisman became the oldest person to travel beyond low Earth orbit and around the Moon. Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen became the first non-U.S. citizen to travel to the Moon.
Pilot Victor Glover became the first person of color to travel to the moon, and Christina Koch is the first woman to make the journey.
The Artemis II mission is the first time humans have gone back to the moon in more than 50 years, while capturing new, unprecedented images of the far side of Earth’s only natural satellite.
Hours after their flyby, while on the return trip back to the Earth, President Trump called in to congratulate the astronauts.
“Today, you've made history and made all America really proud, incredibly proud,” Trump told the astronauts at the time.
"We'll plant our flag once again, and this time we won't just leave footprints. We will establish a permanent presence on the moon, and we'll push on to Mars. That will be very exciting” Trump said.
The crew’s visit comes days after the largest rocket section for the Artemis III mission arrived at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Those pieces traveled more than 900 miles by boat, from NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.
Reporters pressed Trump Wednesday on whether he would consider relocating NASA’s Washington headquarters, or other facilities in states like Texas, Ohio and Florida.
Trump deferred to Isaacson.
"We have 10 amazing centers around the country that all kind of bubble up to contribute to the mission we're able to undertake, like Artemis II.
I think it turned think in terms of the headquarters, we have a lot of people very interested in our mission. So being here in D.C. gives us the opportunity to kind of interact from all our stakeholders, make sure we make the right decisions for the nation” said Issacson.
