Sentinel-1D goes live: a milestone for Europe’s radar mission

01/05/2026

The Copernicus Sentinel-1D satellite, launched last November, is now fully operational after successfully completing its critical in-orbit commissioning phase.

With all four Sentinel-1 satellites having now been deployed, this achievement marks a major milestone for this flagship radar mission – a journey that began more than a decade ago and that has helped pave the way for the future of Earth observation.

When Sentinel-1A – the first of this generation – launched in 2014, it marked more than the start of a single mission; it signalled the beginning of Copernicus, the Earth observation component of the European Union’s space programme.

Its success demonstrated that Europe could deliver consistent, high-quality Earth observation data for the Copernicus Services, and more.

The Sentinel-1 mission was designed as a constellation of two identical satellites orbiting Earth 180 degrees apart for optimal coverage – so in 2016, Sentinel-1B was launched to pair with Sentinel-1A.

The Sentinel-1B mission came to an end in August 2022 after experiencing a technical anomaly that rendered it unable to acquire data. However, Sentinel-1C was launched in 2024 to restore the constellation, followed by Sentinel-1D a year later.

The mission delivers high-resolution synthetic aperture radar images of Earth’s surface in all weathers, day-and-night. The data are critical for monitoring everything from natural disasters and sea ice to land deformation and deforestation.

The constellation’s all-weather, day-and-night imaging has become indispensable for scientists, policymakers and emergency responders worldwide.

Perhaps most remarkable is the longevity of the data record – the satellite series is on track to provide an unprecedented two decades of continuous radar observations.

This long-term dataset strengthens Europe’s leadership in tracking climate change and environmental shifts, offering a reliable foundation for decision-making and research in an increasingly uncertain world.

The carousel of images above offers a mere glimpse of what the four Sentinel-1 satellites have returned over the last 12 years.

The Sentinel-1 mission has also broken ground in another crucial area: sustainability in space.

Sentinel-1C and Sentinel-1D carry a world premiere of a new separation mechanism which will help avoid space debris, underscoring the European Space Agency’s and the European Commission’s commitment to clean space principles.

With the last of the first-generation Sentinel-1 satellites now beginning its operational life in orbit, ESA and the EC are looking ahead.

ESA’s Sentinel-1 Mission Manger, Nuno Miranda, said, “Sentinel-1 began as a trailblazer. With the successful commissioning of Sentinel-1D, it now stands as a cornerstone – reflecting Europe’s achievements while serving as a launchpad for what comes next.

“For several years, we have been advancing a follow-on mission: Sentinel-1 Next Generation, designed to ensure continuity of measurements well into the mid-2030s and beyond.

“These future satellites are expected to deliver enhanced performance and new capabilities, building on the legacy of their predecessors while addressing emerging scientific and societal needs.”

Ukrainian strike kills two teenagers in Russian region – governor

1 May, 2026 09:40 | Updated 1 May, 2026 10:45

Two teenagers have been killed in a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s Belgorod Region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov has said.

The victims were aged 18 and 15, the governor of Belgorod Region wrote in a post on his Telegram channel, adding that the drone deliberately targeted the motorcycle they were riding in the village of Volchya Aleksandrovka in Volokonovsky District.

He added that the two died at the scene from their injuries and offered condolences to their families, writing: “This is a terrible loss for all of us.”

Belgorod and other Russian regions bordering Ukraine have repeatedly been targeted by drone strikes during the ongoing conflict. Moscow has accused Kiev of “terrorism” and of deliberately targeting civilians and critical infrastructure.

The drone which took the boys’ lives was just one of dozens Kiev has used to target Belgorod Region this week. On Wednesday, three women were killed when a drone struck a passenger bus in Voznesenovka.

Eight others were injured, two of them seriously.

A day earlier, a man was killed in the same village when a drone hit a car.

In a separate incident, a married couple were killed when a drone struck their vehicle in the village of Bobrava in Rakityansky district.

Their 16-year-old son was injured and suffered blast trauma.

Russian officials have described the aerial incursions as desperate “terrorist attacks” meant to compensate for the setbacks Kiev’s military has been suffering on the battlefield.

Moscow has retaliated with a long-range strike campaign of its own, targeting dual-use infrastructure, including power grid facilities and military sites in Ukraine with missiles and drones. Russia maintains that it never targets purely civilian sites.

Fourth Ukrainian Drone Strike On Tuapse Oil Refinery Sparks Massive Fire And City Blackout

Updated May 01, 2026 16:52

A marine terminal in Tuapse was targeted by a forth Ukrainian drone strike during the early hours of May 1, sparking a major fire at the local oil refinery.

According to the Krasnodar Krai operational headquarters, the emergency response involved 128 personnel and 41 units of equipment to contain the blaze. No casualties have been reported by local authorities.

Reports from RTVI indicate that at least two storage tanks at the Tuapse Oil Refinery were ignited during the attack, with visual evidence showing heavy black smoke rising from the site.

The strike resulted in the terminal being de-energized, triggering a significant power outage throughout the city.

Local reports further describe a complete blackout in the city center and a total disruption of internet services.

Robert "Magyar" Brovdi, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, earlier confirmed the renewed strikes on the refinery.

“Tuapse in the style of Chornobaivka, 4.0. Remake four: every week, my friends and I go to Tuapse. Naftovykov Street, filling station number 24… (from the series With a light arrival!). And here comes the warm stuff, A5,” Brovdi stated.

Following a fourth strike on the facility, production capacities at the Tuapse oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai have diminished, Olga Melyoshina, a spokesperson for the Unmanned Systems Forces stated during the national telethon, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.

According to Melyoshina, the refinery previously maintained a capacity of 12 million tons of oil per year.

“But the fourth visit, it seems to me, has slightly reduced this capacity, and we will do everything to ensure that the enemy's corresponding capacity only continues to decrease,” she noted.

She emphasized that the Unmanned Systems Forces target only objects connected to the military, identifying oil refining as a primary source of funding for the opposing army.

The spokesperson further highlighted that these operations exert both economic and psychological pressure by undermining the perceived security of Russia's deep rear.

“If previously a distance of 1,500 or 2,000 kilometers from the state border was a safe rear for Russia, today the situation is changing,” Melyoshina said.

Preliminary analytical estimates suggest that Russian oil refining capacities may have dropped by 20–30% as of late April.

During the previous strike on Tuapse on April 28, a significant fire erupted at an oil refinery in Tuapse, located in Russia’s Krasnodar region.

Regional authorities acknowledged the incident, stating that the fire was caused by "falling debris" from unmanned aerial vehicles.

The emergency response was substantial, with over 120 personnel and 39 units of specialized equipment mobilized to bring the flames under control.

Israeli Air Force says it dropped 135,000 bombs in recent wars, warns of Syrian military rebuild

The Israel Air Force dropped 135,000 bombs in recent years of conflict, including 23,860 requested directly by ground forces for immediate support in Gaza and Lebanon.

The Israeli Air Force dropped 135,000 bombs collectively on the various fronts during recent years of war, dating back to October 7, 2023, the IDF announced on Friday.

Within that 135,000 number, which includes many air force-only attacks, there were 23,860 attacks during the war specifically requested by IDF Ground Forces for immediate assistance during operations in Gaza and Lebanon, the military said.

From the perspective of the air force, the way it wages war has changed radically since October 7.

Now the air force is fully integrated with the ground forces, often providing critical air support within seconds or minutes, as opposed to the hours it once took to fulfill such requests.

IDF: Iron Beam laser saw limited use in Iran war due to lack of batteries, 14 needed

Firing Arrow interceptors can cost millions of shekels, Iron Dome interceptors can cost tens of thousands of shekels, but firing the Iron Beam is as cheap as turning a light on.

The Iron Beam laser defense system was used less in the 2026 war with Iran because the military needs 14 batteries to have a significant enough impact, the Israeli Air Force said on Friday.

Previously on March 12, the IDF had acknowledged that it was not using the Iron Beam laser for regular use during the ongoing Iran war.

This admission came despite the fact that various forms of Iron Beam were used to shoot down around 40 Hezbollah drones in fall 2024

Also, this admission came despite the fact that the Defense Ministry in December 2025 announced that Iron Beam has been rolled out in the field.

No magic way to stop Hezbollah's FPV drones from striking, IDF admits

However, removing US restraints on IDF attacks in northern Lebanon could reduce the threat by 80%.

There is no magic for hermetically stopping Hezbollah's First Person View (FPV) drones, which use technology and manual operators that make them harder to jam and much more deadly, the air force said on Friday.

A number of recent incidents in which IDF soldiers were killed or wounded in Lebanon came from such FPV attacks.

IDF sources already admitted on Tuesday that the military does not yet have a full answer for FPV attacks, though in general, it has improved in anti-drone defenses since 2023.

However, on Friday, the air force said that they are hard at work with new tactics to defend specifically against the FPV drones.

Further, the air force said that just around two weeks ago, some new tests were carried out, which could eventually have major ramifications for handling the issue.

IDF shifts focus to Iranian nuclear threat as ballistic missiles, regime change fall by the wayside

All IDF officers are careful to state that the military never promised regime change, and at most the opportunity to improve conditions for such a change.

As a series of complex post-Iran war dilemmas are set into place, the IDF has shifted to focus almost all of its Iran-related attention to the nuclear issue, with the ballistic missiles and regime change questions mostly falling by the wayside.

In briefings, the IDF is spending significant time emphasizing the continued danger of the 60% enriched uranium which the Islamic regime might access under the rubble of its Isfahan and other facilities.

Discussing that issue, the IDF is making it clear that it would be ready to return to a full-fledged war to prevent Iran from using the uranium to move toward a nuclear weapon.

Two injured, car destroyed by Hezbollah drone attack against northern Israel border town

The IDF confirmed that the incident was due to a Hezbollah drone that crossed into northern Israel, calling it a "violation of the ceasefire understandings by the Hezbollah terrorist organization."

Fire and Rescue said two firefighter teams were working at the scene to prevent the fire from spreading, and that the two injured people had already been evacuated.

This comes as the IDF decided to raise restrictions in some of Israel's northern border communities, with Meron, Bar Yohai, Or HaGanuz, and Safsufa transferring to partial activity.

According to the Home Front Command, these communities will only be able to hold educational activities and work in a structure or location from which a standard protected space can be reached within the required protection time; with gatherings of up to 200 people in an open area, and up to 600 people within a structure.

Araghchi claims US cost of Iran war is $100 billion

The United States’ cost of war from the conflict in Iran is $100 billion, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed in a Friday post to X/Twitter.

On Thursday, CNN reported that the cost cited by the Pentagon ($25 billion) excluded the costs of rebuilding US military installations and replacing destroyed assets, which would raise the number to $40-50 billion.

He added in his post that “indirect costs for US taxpayers are FAR higher. Monthly bill for each American household is $500 and rising fast.”

“Israel First always means America Last,” he said.

JD Vance Slammed As Steven Greer Warns 'Demon UFO' Claim Could Trigger Global Panic

01 May 2026, 7:48 AM BST

Dr. Greer warns of potential global panic following VP Vance's controversial UFO remarks

Vice President JD Vance has been slammed after claiming some UFO sightings may be demonic, prompting UFO disclosure advocate Dr Steven Greer to warn of potential global panic.

In a podcast released today, Greer described the vice president's remarks as reckless and uninformed.

The comments, made on a conservative talk show last month, have reignited intense debate over how the US government should handle unidentified aerial phenomena disclosure.

Greer, a veteran campaigner with decades of experience briefing world leaders, fears the 'demon UFO' claim could derail efforts and incite widespread alarm.

Vance's 'Demon UFO' Claim

The furore began when Vance appeared on The Benny Show in late March.

He admitted being 'obsessed' with UFOs and pledged to examine classified files, but suggested some unexplained encounters might represent 'the devil's great tricks' rather than alien activity.

The New York Post, in a widely shared post on X from its verified account, highlighted the vice president's view that UFOs could be 'demons' flying around Earth.

Researchers have criticised the remarks as lacking full context. Greer noted that Vance 'hasn't been read in' on the complete picture held by certain insiders.

The statement has been seen by some as reflecting a broader shift towards framing UAPs in spiritual terms within political discourse.

This comes as the administration has been releasing Pentagon files on the subject and registering domains such as aliens.gov, signalling growing official interest in the topic.

Greer Warns of Global Panic Risk

Dr Steven Greer responded directly in a video titled 'It's Not Demons: JD Vance Is Wrong About UFOs'.

The founder of the Disclosure Project argued that most observed craft are man-made, reverse-engineered from extraterrestrial technology since the 1950s.

He described the demonic framing as part of a long-term disinformation campaign designed to keep advanced science secret.

'If this issue comes out wrongly, it would be one of the most catastrophic events in human history,' Greer said.

He warned it could trigger religious extremism and even a holy war if mishandled during the current wave of Pentagon file releases and domain registrations such as aliens.gov.

With his National Press Club event set for 8 May, Greer urged a scientific approach to disclosure, emphasising potential benefits like free energy technologies that could end scarcity and transform the global economy.

He has long promoted peaceful contact methods through protocols he developed in the 1970s.

Implications for UFO Disclosure

The episode highlights tensions in the accelerating push for UAP transparency under the current administration.

While Vance has pushed for openness, his spiritual interpretation has alarmed disclosure advocates who fear it undermines public confidence and risks panic.

Experts say Vance's comments reflect the mainstreaming of alternative beliefs in senior political circles, even as public interest in the phenomenon continues to grow.

Greer, who has briefed presidents and intelligence chiefs, called for courage in Washington and greater public involvement through peaceful contact protocols.

Critics argue such comments mainstream fringe ideas at a critical juncture for extraterrestrial intelligence disclosure.

As of 1 May 2026, no further White House comment has emerged. Greer's forthcoming briefing is expected to feature whistle-blower accounts and focus on man-made craft.

The exchange underscores the delicate balance required as the world edges closer to full disclosure of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Experts stress the need for objectivity in the disclosure process to prevent any form of panic.

Parents of Chandra Levy believe her death could be linked to UFOs

Updated: May 1, 2026 / 08:30 AM CDT

Susan and Robert Levy, the parents of murdered D.C. intern Chandra Levy, spoke exclusively to NewsNation about their feelings almost 25 years on from her disappearance.

Robert and Susan told “Jesse Weber Live” they believe their daughter’s knowledge of and curiosity about UFOs may have contributed to her death.

DC intern Chandra Levy disappeared in 2001

Levy’s case is one of the biggest unsolved murder mysteries ever to hit Washington, D.C. The 24-year-old government intern from California disappeared May 1, 2001.

She was interning with the Federal Bureau of Prisons before her disappearance, which grabbed national media attention and became heightened when Levy was romantically connected to then-California congressman Gary Condit, who represented Levy’s hometown of Modesto.

Police publicly maintained the congressman was never a suspect and Condit was never charged in the case.

Chandra Levy said she, boss Gary Condit knew about UFOs: Parets

“Chandra mentioned something that she knew about the UFOs, that Congressman Condit was on the (House Intelligence) Committee to learn about UFOs,” Robert Levy told NewsNation.

“She says, ‘Oh, he believes in UFOs like I do’ and that he deals with this stuff. So then it left me thinking, knowing Chandra, she’s very inquisitive.

Could she have known something that she wasn’t supposed to know? And could she have been wiped out because she knew too much?” Susan Levy added.

The Levys added they had “been told not to touch this subject.”

25 years after Chandra Levy’s disappearance, parents want disclosure

Susan Levy told NewsNation, as many as three years ago at a “Contact in the Desert” UFO conference, she felt “a strong, intuitive thing coming from me that there’s a possibility there may be a connection” between her daughter’s death and CIA involvement.

“We don’t know what really goes on in the government. So many of us don’t know the truth about many things,” she said.

“I’m stepping on a limb. I’m asking for disclosure. Someone knows the truth of what happened to my daughter, Chandra, and what has happened to a lot of other people who have disappeared, gone missing, that have disappeared in some mysterious ways.”

Man originally convicted of Chandra Levy’s murder was released

More than a year after Levy’s disappearance, in May 2002, a hiker discovered Levy’s remains in a secluded area of Washington’s Rock Creek Park, a few miles from her Dupont Circle apartment.

Her death was ruled a homicide, but the circumstances remained a mystery. In 2009, Ingmar Guandique was officially charged with Levy’s murder while serving time for other assaults in Rock Creek Park in 2001.

Missing scientists cases may never be solved: Ex-CIA officer

In 2010, Guandique was convicted of Levy’s murder, but was granted a new trial in 2015 when it was revealed a key prosecution witness may have provided false testimony. In 2016, prosecutors said they wouldn’t seek a retrial.

Guandique was released and later deported to his native El Salvador in 2017.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Frames UFO Disclosure Through The Book of Enoch As A Window Into A Reality Beyond Human Perception

May 1, 2026

A new layer has been added to the already complex national conversation surrounding UFO disclosure, and it is one that bridges science, policy, and ancient texts in a way few expected.

Florida, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has publicly suggested that the ongoing discussion about unidentified aerial phenomena—and the possibility of non-human intelligence—may be closely connected to themes found in the Book of Enoch.

That statement, on its face, sounds like a departure from the structured, evidence-driven tone that has defined recent disclosure efforts. But when examined through the frameworks already being discussed—particularly the interdimensional hypothesis and the teaching model advanced by Carl Sagan—the connection Luna is drawing becomes more intelligible, even if it remains controversial.

To understand why this linkage is being made, it is necessary to step back and examine the core elements of each component.

The modern UAP conversation, acknowledged by agencies such as NASA and the Department of Defense, has produced a growing body of observations that resist conventional explanation.

Objects have been documented exhibiting sudden acceleration, seamless trans-medium travel, and behavior that does not align with known propulsion systems or aerodynamics.

These are not isolated claims—they are part of a record that has been formally recognized, even if not fully explained.

At the same time, some policymakers and analysts have begun to explore whether the extraterrestrial framework—physical beings traveling vast distances through space—is sufficient to explain these phenomena.

This has opened the door to alternative interpretations, including the possibility that these objects or intelligences operate in dimensions or layers of reality that intersect with our own.

This is where the intellectual groundwork laid by Sagan becomes relevant. Using the logic of Flatland, Sagan demonstrated that beings confined to a lower-dimensional existence would perceive higher-dimensional objects in fragmented and often confusing ways.

The phenomenon would appear to defy the rules of their world—not because it actually does, but because they lack the capacity to perceive it fully.

Now enter the Book of Enoch.

The text, which is not part of the canonical Bible for most Western traditions but remains influential in certain historical and theological contexts, describes beings known as the Watchers—entities that descend from the heavens, interact with humanity, and impart knowledge that is portrayed as both advanced and, in some interpretations, disruptive.

These accounts include descriptions of movement between realms, interactions that transcend normal human experience, and the introduction of knowledge that alters human development.

Luna’s apparent connection rests on structural parallels rather than direct claims of identity.

In both the interdimensional hypothesis and the Enoch narrative, there is an underlying theme of interaction between different layers of existence. In one framework, it is expressed through physics and dimensional theory.

In the other, it is conveyed through symbolic and theological language. The common thread is the idea that human beings are not operating in isolation, but within a broader, more complex reality that occasionally intersects with our own.

From an analytical standpoint, this does not mean that the Book of Enoch is being presented as scientific evidence. It is not. What it represents is an early attempt—through the lens available at the time—to describe encounters or concepts that may not have had a clear vocabulary.

Just as Flatland uses geometry to explain dimensional limits, ancient texts sometimes used narrative and symbolism to describe experiences that fell outside ordinary understanding.

The challenge for modern policymakers is navigating this territory without collapsing the distinction between belief, theory, and evidence.

Luna’s statements, viewed in that context, appear to be less about endorsing a specific conclusion and more about expanding the conversation.

By referencing the Book of Enoch, she is effectively pointing to historical accounts that mirror certain structural elements of the interdimensional hypothesis.

The implication is not that these texts provide definitive answers, but that they may reflect humanity’s long-standing attempt to grapple with phenomena that remain difficult to explain.

For readers approaching this topic, the key is to separate correlation from confirmation.

There is, at present, no verified evidence that UAPs are connected to the entities described in ancient texts.

What exists is a convergence of ideas: modern observations that challenge existing models, theoretical frameworks that attempt to account for those observations, and historical narratives that appear to describe similar patterns in symbolic terms.

As someone trained to evaluate evidence and construct arguments based on verifiable facts, I approach this intersection with measured caution.

The introduction of religious or historical texts into a policy-driven discussion carries inherent risks, including misinterpretation and the potential for speculation to outpace substantiated findings.

At the same time, it would be equally short-sighted to ignore the broader context in which these ideas are emerging.

The disclosure process currently underway is not delivering simple answers. It is revealing complexity—layer upon layer of data that does not neatly align with prior assumptions.

In that environment, it is not surprising that policymakers, scientists, and the public are reaching for frameworks that help make sense of the unknown.

Sagan provided one such framework through dimensional theory. The Book of Enoch represents another, rooted in historical narrative.

Luna’s comments bring those frameworks into the same conversation, not as equivalents, but as parallel attempts to describe something that may exist beyond the limits of ordinary perception.

Whether that connection ultimately holds any explanatory value will depend on the evidence that continues to emerge.

For now, what can be said with certainty is this: the conversation around UFOs is no longer confined to questions of technology or national security.

It has expanded into deeper territory—into questions about reality, perception, and the possibility that humanity has been encountering the unknown far longer than modern records suggest.

And as that conversation continues to evolve, the challenge will not simply be uncovering the truth.

It will be understanding it.
