Look up the book, the author and read what he has to say, it's jaw-dropping to say the least. Worth the time to check it out.
While that may seem outlandish or far-fetched for some, 98% of the public has no idea the level of tech or weapons we (and some others) actually have, so your speculation is actually quite likely. And necessarily, there would be a concerted effort to tone down or downplay the incident.
