Actually, I was taught that, and I distinctly remember it because I recall being utterly perplexed. Of all the things I "officially learned" about American history, it is perhaps the one that stood out most distinctly as an issue where I had no idea who was right or wrong. I guess that turns out to be a good thing (my puzzlement).
