Spencer Pratt won the LA mayoral debate. Could he actually win the race?
Could Spencer Pratt be Los Angeles' next mayor? The ex-reality TV villain and first-time Republican politician stunned political experts and plenty of observers when he barreled through the first mayoral debate on Wednesday night and wiped the floor with his opponents.
"The reality is no matter how many beds you give these people, they are on super meth. They are on fentanyl," Pratt thundered in an attack on his opponent Nithya Raman's ineffectiveness on the homeless problem. "The DEA statistics says 90% of this is a drug addiction problem. Councilman Raman's plan for treatment first? I will go below the Harbor Freeway tomorrow with her and we can find some of these people she's going to offer treatment for. She's going to get stabbed in the neck."
"I actually thought that [Pratt] had a strong performance," Mike Bonin, executive director of the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs, told TheWrap. "I'm sure the debate organizers were worried, going in, about how the reality TV star bad boy would behave. Would he keep interrupting? But he came across as serious and passionate and funny at times."
Kamy Akhavan, managing director of USC's Center for the Political Future, said that between incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Raman, Pratt was a candidate who was "really not taken seriously" before Wednesday.
"The expectations of him were the lowest, so he had the most to gain and the least to lose," he told TheWrap.
An open NBC4 online survey, which did not require respondents to watch the debate, found the Republican candidate crushing his opponents with more than 80% support, far ahead of Bass and Raman.
Pratt's appearance underscored how outsider personalities with built-in online audiences are testing whether internet attention can disrupt traditional politics. He seemed to make a strong impression for both broadcast viewers and social media scrollers, and experts told TheWrap that, while social engagement alone won't win a mayoral race, "The Hills" star effectively tapped into voter frustrations around L.A. leadership, public safety and Hollywood's ongoing production slowdown.

F.B.I. Raid of Democrat’s Office Jolts Virginia Politics
Two people familiar with the case said the search of a lawmaker’s business office was related to a Biden-era investigation of possible corruption and bribery related to marijuana dispensaries.
F.B.I. agents on Wednesday searched the business office of a powerful Democratic state legislator in Virginia who had played a key role in a high-stakes congressional redistricting fight.
The legislator, L. Louise Lucas of Portsmouth, is a senior leader in the State Senate, where she has served for more than 30 years. Two people familiar with the case said the search was related to an investigation opened during the Biden administration that has continued, examining possible corruption and bribery related to marijuana dispensary businesses.
The F.B.I. agents executed a search warrant at an office in Portsmouth, Va., for businesses that Ms. Lucas owns including a network of group homes for older adults and at a neighboring marijuana dispensary she owns, according to several people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Other locations were also searched, the people said.
Federal agents served Ms. Lucas with the search warrant as she entered a massage parlor on Wednesday morning, according to two people who spoke with her.
“Today’s actions by federal agents are about far more than one state senator; they are about power and who is allowed to use it on behalf of the people,” Ms. Lucas said in a statement on Wednesday night. “What we saw fits a clear pattern from this administration: When challenged, they try to intimidate and silence the voices who stood up to them.”
She added, “I am not backing down.”
The F.B.I. search sent shock waves through the insular world of Virginia politics. Democrats expressed a mixture of surprise and suspicion, while Republicans stayed publicly quiet even as they privately celebrated. Few in either party had many details about what was happening with Ms. Lucas.
Still, some Democrats were quick to express skepticism, nodding to the way that the increasingly politicized Justice Department has pursued inquiries into Mr. Trump’s domestic opponents and liberal organizations during his second term.
Ms. Lucas has long been a leading proponent of legal marijuana in Virginia. This year, she introduced legislation to create a regulatory framework for retail marijuana sales. The bill passed and is awaiting a signature or veto from Gov. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat.
Ms. Spanberger declined to comment on the raid, a spokeswoman said. Jeff Ryer, the chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, also declined to comment.

Ms. Lucas’s influence was crucial to the recent battle over congressional redistricting. A vocal backer of the most aggressive map possible, she insisted in public and private on a map with a 10-to-1 partisan split.
She and other Democrats argued that the new district lines were needed because of efforts by Mr. Trump and his supporters to redraw boundaries in Republican-dominated states before the midterm elections. That G.O.P. effort has come at a time when the war with Iran and high gas prices are hurting the party’s popularity.
In Virginia, Democrats currently hold six of 11 House seats, but the new map could tilt that to 10 to 1 in their favor. Republicans have appealed the new maps to the Supreme Court of Virginia, which is expected to rule on their legality soon.
In February, after Republicans complained that the proposed Virginia political map was unfair to their voters, Ms. Lucas was characteristically blunt on social media.
“You all started it,” she replied to Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas. “We,” she said, using an expletive, “finished it.”

FBI opens probe into Senate Democrats for classified leaks
The FBI has opened an investigation into possible classified leaks by Democrats or their staffs on the Senate Intelligence Committee, spurred in part by a National Security Agency criminal referral, sources told Just the News in a report by John Solomon published Wednesday night.
The NSA referral, made last summer, centered on the disclosure of one of the agency’s overseas intercepts. The intercept captured two Hezbollah figures discussing a 2017 trip to Syria by then-private citizen Tulsi Gabbard, in which the two claimed she had met with “the big guy” — a phrase that surfaced in a January 28, 2025 New York Times piece during Gabbard’s contentious DNI confirmation process. The Times suggested the reference implied a meeting with senior Hezbollah leadership, a claim Gabbard adamantly denied at the time.
NSA later concluded that the leaked information was authentic to the intercept but that Gabbard had not, in fact, met with Hezbollah leaders. The agency identified potential leakers among Senate Intelligence Committee Democrat staff who had access to the intercept prior to the Times report.
According to Solomon’s reporting, the referral sat inside the Justice Department for months — with senior DOJ leaders unaware of the concerns — until FBI Director Kash Patel was alerted to its existence a few weeks ago. Since then, FBI counterintelligence and criminal investigators have ramped up the probe and expanded it to other potential leaks and media contacts tied to the committee’s Democrats, sources said.
The story fits a documented pattern. Over the last 15 months, the Trump administration’s crackdown on classified leaks has produced a series of named cases. Former National Security Advisor John Bolton was indicted earlier this year. Last month, a former Army employee holding a top secret clearance was arrested and charged with leaking classified material to a journalist. Patel’s FBI has made the leaks pipeline a stated counterintelligence priority.
The Senate Intelligence Committee has been here before. In 2018, the panel’s former security director, James Wolfe, pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his leaks of nonpublic information to a reporter. That case ended his career and produced a federal sentence — but it did not end the committee’s history of selective disclosure to friendly press.
The current probe is still in its early phase, and Just the News relies on unnamed sources for the existence and scope of the investigation. The Bureau has not publicly confirmed the matter. What is documented: the underlying leak (the Times story), the NSA’s authority to make criminal referrals on intercept disclosures, and the broader administration push to prosecute classified-information cases that previous administrations let drift.
Two things worth watching. First, whether the probe surfaces named staff or, eventually, named senators. The 2018 Wolfe case stayed at the staff level; this one, by Solomon’s framing, is already broader. Second, whether the original Times leak — used to damage a Trump nominee mid-confirmation — is treated as a one-off or as part of a documented pattern of intelligence-adjacent leaks targeting incoming officials.
Either answer reshapes what accountability for classified disclosures looks like under this DOJ.

Toyota fourth-quarter profit misses by wide margin as U.S. tariffs drive 49% slump
-Toyota’s quarterly operating profit missed estimates amid higher tariffs that raised costs.
-Vehicle sales in the fourth quarter fell to 2.29 million from 2.36 million units a year earlier.
-The world’s largest automaker by vehicle sales cut its annual operating income forecast despite higher revenue guidance.
Japan’s Toyota Motor on Friday reported a 49% drop in fourth-quarter operating profit, missing analysts’ estimates as U.S. tariffs and intensifying competition from Chinese automakers pressured earnings.
Here are Toyota’s results compared with median estimates from LSEG:
Revenue: 12.6 trillion yen vs. 12.6 trillion yen expected
Operating profit: 569.4 billion yen vs. 813.28 billion yen expected
The world’s largest automaker by sales volume saw a 1.89% year-on-year rise in revenue during the fourth quarter ended March, in line with expectations.
Operating profit declined for a fourth consecutive year-over-year period, reflecting persistent pressure from U.S. tariffs.
Net income attributable to the company was 817.2 billion yen from 664.6 billion yen a year ago.
Toyota’s consolidated vehicle sales in its financial fourth quarter fell to 2.29 million from 2.36 million units a year earlier.
Toyota lowered its operating income forecast by over 20% to 3 trillion yen for the financial year ending March 2027, while raising its sales revenue forecast by 0.6%.
“We have recently seen a significant rise in our breakeven volume due to a combination of increases in investments in human resources and future-oriented investments and the impact of U.S. tariffs,” the company said in an earnings statement.
The automaker said in a media briefing on Friday that it adopted a six-month average for its foreign exchange assumptions, rather than the usual monthly average, due to current volatility. Toyota set its average exchange rate assumption for the fiscal year at 150 yen to the U.S. dollar.
The weak yen has boosted the competitiveness of exporters such as Toyota by making its products cheaper for foreign buyers and increasing the value of overseas profits when converted back into the currency.
Toyota said its research and development expenses hit a record high partly due to certification-related issues and capacity constraints, though it expects its capital expenditure to stabilize going forward.
The company said it is also continuing to cut costs and reduce wasteful production, but expects higher expenses from the Middle East conflict and inflation.
The productivity of Toyota Motor’s assets declined over the full period 2016–2025, with a minor downtrend in asset turnover, according to a May 5 report by Price Target Research.
Toyota is facing challenges, weighed down by slowing sales in China’s auto market, vehicle recalls, intensifying competition in the electric vehicle space from peers, and Trump-related tariffs.
The company posted weaker U.S. quarterly sales in the first quarter amid concerns about affordability and fuel price pressures from the Middle East conflict. Toyota has also been trying to navigate production plans amid tariffs and other regulatory changes.
The company said in March that it would spend $1 billion total at two U.S. plants as part of a plan to invest up to $10 billion there over the next five years.
Toyota expects to see growth in the battery-electric vehicle space in China, Europe and North America, and plans to expand its business in those regions.
Toyota shares last traded 2.18% lower in Tokyo on Friday.

Nvidia CEO says AI partnership with Corning will ‘revitalize American manufacturing’
-Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang highlighted his company’s partnership with Corning as an opportunity to reinvest in American manufacturing.
-As part of the partnership, Corning will increase optical manufacturing capacity in the United States tenfold.
Nvidia
CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC’s Jim Cramer that the company’s new partnership with Corning represents an important opportunity to rebuild critical parts of the technology supply chain in the United States.
“We’re going through the single largest infrastructure buildout in human history,” Huang said “Mad Money” on Wednesday. “Artificial intelligence is going to become fundamental infrastructure all over the world, and surely here in the United States.”
His comments came one day after Nvidia announced a major partnership with Corning to dramatically expand domestic optical connectivity manufacturing capacity. As part of the deal, Corning is building three new facilities in Texas and North Carolina, saying it will create more than 3,000 jobs.
Corning
shares surged more than 12% following the announcement in Wednesday’s session, while Nvidia shares popped 6%. Cramer’s Charitable Trust, the portfolio used by the CNBC Investing Club, owns the stocks of both Corning and Nvidia.
Huang said the scale of AI infrastructure spending is creating a unique opportunity to reinvest in American manufacturing and supply chains after decades of offshoring. The technology supply chain, in particular, has developed strong roots in places like Taiwan, China and Vietnam.
“This is such an extraordinary opportunity because we can use these market dynamics to reinvest, revitalize American manufacturing for the first time in several generations,” he said.
The partnership centers on optical technologies used to connect chips within massive AI data centers. Huang said the next generation of AI infrastructure will require enormous amounts of optical connectivity as computing demands are rapidly increasing to the point where copper wires aren’t able to keep up.
“We’re going to scale up optical at a scale that, quite frankly, no optical companies have ever enjoyed,” Huang said.
According to Huang, the current wave of AI investment is benefiting far more than just technology companies. He pointed to rising demand for electricians, construction workers, chip manufacturing employees, and data center infrastructure specialists as evidence that the buildout is already rippling through the broader economy.
“The number of shortages that we have, and the demand for all of these skilled craft experts, are just incredibly high,” Huang said.
Huang said Nvidia’s partnership with Corning is ultimately about ensuring the U.S. has the infrastructure and supply chain necessary to support the next phase of AI development.
“We need the support and partnership of the world’s best companies in our supply chain to help us create and realize this future,” he said. “Silicon photonics and optical technology is a very big part of that.”

Judge denies Fulton County's request to return 2020 ballots seized by FBI
A federal judge in Georgia denied a motion by officials in Fulton County, Georgia, to return ballots and other materials from the 2020 election that were taken by the FBI in a court-authorized search earlier this year.
U.S. District Judge Jean-Paul Boulee said Wednesday that attorneys representing Fulton County did not establish enough evidence to prove that the FBI affidavit at the center of the case was deficient in a way that had a "callous disregard" for the county's rights.

Longtime Dem Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to resign months into new term
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, 73, said Thursday she will resign effective June 30, a surprise move less than six months after the five-term Democrat won reelection to lead the nation’s 14th-largest city.
"Serving as Charlotte’s mayor has been the honor of my life," Lyles, 73, said in a statement Thursday. "I am proud of our record navigating various challenges, strengthening our economy, investing in our neighborhoods, and building a foundation for Charlotte’s continued success during a time of rapid growth."
"As in all things politics, I am sure there will be speculation as to why I am making this decision now," the statement continued. "Simply put, I am going to spend time with my grandchildren. Like many of us, I have missed some moments with them and intend to not miss anymore."
Lyles easily won reelection in 2025 after facing questions over whether she would run again, and there were growing questions about her recent visibility and active leadership of the city.
The Charlotte Ledger reported that Lyles had been missing more City Council meetings than usual after years of regularly presiding over them. She also had not attended most monthly zoning meetings for several months — possibly longer.
WFAE reported that some in the community, private sector and city government had raised concerns about Lyles’ health and whether she could continue carrying out the responsibilities of the office. The outlet reported that Lyles had appeared confused at times during procedural discussions, including at one recent council meeting when she had to be reminded that she needed to cast a tiebreaking vote.
Asked Monday at the Government Center by a WFAE reporter whether she intended to complete her term, Lyles declined to answer directly.
"We will see," she said, just days before her resignation.
The station reported that Lyles was then escorted away from the reporter by an assistant and later by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.
Her resignation will leave the Charlotte City Council to decide who completes the remainder of her term. Critics on social media are decrying the early resignation after reelection, saying giving the council the power to pick the mayor now undermines the democratic voting process and hands power to few.
"I am very proud of my record as mayor, but I also firmly believe that true leadership includes knowing when it is time to let the next generation of leaders take over," Lyles statement added. "By leaving early, the voters will have more time to learn about their candidates. Our city is strong, our trajectory is positive, and now is the right moment for someone else to build on our progress from the past few years."
Lyles has served as Charlotte’s mayor since 2017 after previously serving on the City Council.

Trump Admin Drops Hammer On Blue State’s Biggest City Over Gun Ban
The Department of Justice announced Tuesday it was suing Denver, Colorado, over a ban on modern semiautomatic firearms, citing its inclusion of the AR-15.
Denver passed the ban in 1989, shortly after a gunman with a lengthy arrest record used a semiautomatic rifle that bore a superficial resemblance to the AK-47 to kill multiple children at a Stockton, California, day care center. In court documents, the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division said the ordnance targeting so-called “assault weapons” should not be enforced against those who owned AR-15s with 30-round magazines, the standard capacity for the rifle.
“There cannot be the slightest question that millions of Americans have chosen to equip themselves with AR-15 style rifles with standard capacity magazines, and they use those ordinary semiautomatic rifles for a variety of lawful purposes, including but not limited to self-defense,” the DOJ said in the complaint filed Tuesday in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado.
“When the City banned AR-15 style rifles with standard capacity magazines, it banned an arm in common use for lawful purposes by law-abiding citizens,” the DOJ added. “Therefore, the Ordinance violates the Second Amendment, and the United States brings this action to vindicate the rights of Denver citizens whose rights have been—and are continuing to be—violated by Defendants.”
Democratic Denver Mayor Mike Johnson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“Assault weapons” is a euphemism that gun-control advocates use to gain support for banning certain semi-automatic firearms with features that provide a cosmetic similarity to firearms capable of fully-automatic operation. The National Shooting Sports Foundation estimated that over 24 million “modern sporting rifles,” which include the AR-15, are “in circulation” in a July 2022 release.
“I have directed the Civil Rights Division, through our new Second Amendment Section, to defend law-abiding Americans from restrictions such as those we are challenging in these cases,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said. “Law-abiding Americans, regardless of what city or state they reside in, should not have to live under threat of criminal sanction just for exercising their Second Amendment right to possess arms which are owned by tens of millions of their fellow citizens.”
“The Constitution is not a suggestion and the Second Amendment is not a second-class right,” acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said. “Denver’s ban on commonly owned semi-automatic rifles directly violates the right to bear arms. This Department of Justice will vigorously defend the liberties of law-abiding citizens nationwide.”
Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a similar state-wide ban into law in 2025. The DOJ declined to comment about whether that law would also be challenged in court.
A top NRA leader praised the Trump administration for filing the litigation against Denver’s gun ban,
“This is exactly what gun owners voted for,” said NRA-ILA Executive Director John Commerford. “The Trump administration has been relentless in defending the Second Amendment, and today’s lawsuit against Denver’s unconstitutional AR-15 ban is another powerful example.”
“It’s long past time that progressive politicians are held accountable for trampling the God-given rights of law-abiding citizens, and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is doing precisely that,” Commerford continued.

Nearly 19,000 people used ‘vouching’ to register to vote in Minnesota on Election Day 2024
Data obtained by America First Legal also shows how many people used "vouching" to register to vote in 2022 and 2020.
Data from the Minnesota secretary of state shows that 18,898 people used “vouching” to either update their voter registration, or become registered to vote, in Minnesota in 2024. That information was obtained by America First Legal in a data request.
Under Minnesota state law, an individual seeking to become registered to vote on Election Day can confirm their residency simply by having a registered voter “vouch” for them. In short, the registered voter signs an oath confirming the unregistered person’s address.
State law allows a registered voter to “vouch” for up to eight people. However, staff at residential facilities are not bound by the eight-person vouching limit. The state’s voter vouching system was recently criticized by congressional Republicans.
Now, America First Legal, a nonprofit law firm based in Washington, D.C., has obtained data from the Minnesota secretary of state which shows how many people have used the vouching system in recent elections.
According to data from the Minnesota secretary of state, 18,898 people used vouching on Election Day in 2024. Of those individuals, 13,441 updated their voter registration records while 5,457 were newly registered to vote.
In 2022, 10,278 people used vouching on Election Day. That figure is significantly lower than 2024 because 2022 was a midterm with far lower turnout. Of the 10,278 individuals, 8,063 updated the voter registration records while 2,215 were newly registered to vote.
In 2020, 17,616 people used vouching on Election Day. In total, 12,547 people updated their voter registration records while 5,069 were newly registered to vote.
America First Legal noted that it requested data on the vouching method used, but the Minnesota secretary of state’s office said it “does not record or maintain data on vouching method (i.e., residential facility staff vs. registered voter).”
“With tens of thousands of voters registering through vouching across recent cycles, without basic verification safeguards, the vouching policies and practices leave Minnesota’s elections vulnerable and risk Americans’ votes being canceled by fraudulently registered voters,” America First Legal attorney Will Scolinos said in a press release.
In a statement to Alpha News, the Minnesota secretary of state’s office said “Minnesota law has allowed for vouching for more than 50 years. However, use of the process is very rare. In the 2024 general election, less than 0.6% of votes cast used the vouching process.”
The office also said “vouching is only used to provide proof of a potential voter’s residence in the precinct. The potential voter must still provide their Minnesota driver’s license or ID card number, or the last four digits of their social security number, for identity verification.”
Additionally, the Minnesota secretary of state noted that vouchers sign oaths “under penalty of perjury,” and information obtained during the vouching process is submitted to the statewide database where it is checked for discrepancies.
“If a discrepancy is found during this process, it must be referred to local law enforcement for investigation and possible prosecution,” added the office.
