Christianity is, symbolically, the inversion of the old world order; the antithesis of the US regime. It is a first of its kind religion in this respect and of utmost significance to world history. We didn't ever "control" either Christianity or Islam. We have throughout history injected big ideas like this and to a lesser extent stories, parables, artistic works, etc., as blunt and imperfect instruments to nudge mankind in the right direction. It is only in the modern era that we could conceive of programmatic seizure of power with the ability to leverage scientific ability to overcome our inferior numbers.
Take something like the ongoing health care debate. As is usually the case, both sides have good points. We'd like to live in a society where no one is deprived of needed medical care, but there are valid concerns within the paradigm about increasing burdens of government being applied in such a way that cynically attacks and undermines the middle class.
Both sides of the debate are really talking about the same bigger problem though, a lack of wealth available to the general population. The way to address that is to do things like build a space elevator, start growing the economy 10x faster than is usual, and have a government so overwhelmed with surplus that no one has to worry about these scarcity problems anymore.

It has been known for many years before cancer became a major problem that dealing with it was a key to extending human longevity. One of the reasons they spread cancer in society was to recruit funding for studying it.

You can expect shallow pleasure seeking to grow dull and uninteresting to most very rapidly and people to gravitate to things that fulfill them only on the deepest levels, love, enchantment by their music, the most richly crafted novel, or other things of this nature.

The average number of children produced may drop further, but that is not necessarily alarming when the population isn't continually culled from old age.
The way in which people go about their relationships is also dramatically altered by a more permanent existence. By moving our agriculture to indoor farming we reduce the toxic effects of pesticides and much of the motivation for GMO as opposed to selective breeding of better yielding crops. Cheap energy will make this transition happen for economics reasons; it is better to be able to grow year round, you get higher yields indoors, and so on.
Besides cheap energy for powering indoor lightning, the only other real obstacle in the way is water management. This needs to be addressed in big ways with projects like NAWAPA, but a higher energy throughput economy will make a variety of other solutions practicable like desalination plants on coasts distant from mountain ranges.
