The Ukrainian military has violated the Victory Day ceasefire on 8,970 occasions since it took effect at midnight on Friday, including drone and artillery strikes, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Moscow said on Friday that it had ordered all of its troops along the Ukraine front line to halt combat operations and stay at their positions.
In a statement on Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry stressed that its forces were continuing to abide by the ceasefire. By contrast, the Ukrainian military had conducted “strikes on our forces’ positions involving unmanned aerial vehicles and artillery,” military officials in Moscow reported. On top of that, a number of Russian regions, including Crimea, Bryansk Region, Belgorod Region, Kursk Region, and Moscow Region, have come under Ukrainian attacks.
According to the ministry, of the 8,970 ceasefire violations on Kiev’s part, 1,173 attacks were conducted by Ukrainian artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, mortars and tanks. The Russian military has additionally recorded a total of 7,151 enemy drone strikes.
“Ukrainian forces have carried out twelve attacks on Russian positions,” according to the statement.
Russian troops have responded in kind, launching retaliatory strikes against Ukrainian firing positions, command posts, and UAV launch sites, the Defense Ministry stated.
Earlier this week, the MOD announced a unilateral two-day ceasefire on May 8-9 to mark the 81st anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany and the end of World War II in Europe.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that he had directly asked Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky to cease hostilities for three days, May 9-11, with both agreeing to the proposal. Trump added that Moscow and Kiev would swap 1,000 POWs each during the period.
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” the US president wrote, expressing hope for a “big extension.”
Putin’s aide Yury Ushakov later confirmed that Moscow agreed to extend the ceasefire it had originally announced for May 8-9 for the period mentioned by Trump, as well as to a major prisoner exchange.

Cyberattacks powered by advanced models could disrupt markets and payment systems, the fund has warned
Artificial intelligence could make cyberattacks a systemic threat to global finance, the International Monetary Fund has warned, saying advanced models can help attackers exploit vulnerabilities faster than institutions can fix them.
In a blog post published on Thursday, the IMF said its latest analysis suggests that “extreme cyber-incident losses could trigger funding strains, raise solvency concerns, and disrupt broader markets.”
According to the organization, the current financial system relies on shared digital infrastructure, including software, cloud services and networks for payments and other data. The fund warned that advanced AI models can sharply reduce the time and cost needed to identify and exploit weaknesses, raising the risk of simultaneous attacks on widely used systems.
The fund cited Anthropic’s recent controlled release of Claude Mythos Preview, which it described as “an advanced AI model with exceptional cyber capabilities.” According to the IMF, Mythos could find and exploit vulnerabilities in every major operating system and web browser, “even when used by non-experts.”
AI-driven cyber risks could destabilize the financial system if they are not managed carefully, the IMF stressed, noting that attacks could spread beyond finance because banks share digital foundations with energy, telecommunications and public services.
“Defenses will inevitably be breached, so resilience must also be a priority,” the IMF warned, calling for cyber stress testing, scenario analysis, board-level oversight, public-private cooperation and stronger international coordination.

A fire broke out Friday afternoon at PBF Energy's Chalmette refinery outside New Orleans, according to the facility.
Reuters cited people familiar with the incident who said the 190,000-barrel-per-day Chalmette refinery suffered an explosion on Friday afternoon. The explosion can be traced to a reformer heater used to convert refining byproducts into octane-boosting components added to unfinished gasoline to make premium and mid-grade fuel blends.
The 190,000-barrel-per-day refinery is one of the major Gulf Coast refineries because it produces gasoline, distillates, and specialty chemicals, so any sustained outage can impact regional fuel balances, especially gasoline and diesel supply.
"Fence-line monitoring confirms no off-site impacts," according to the message from the refinery. "Everyone working in the area is safe and accounted for."

IDF issues evacuation warning to nine villages; says it hit 85 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon over the past day and an underground weapons site in the Beqaa Valley
At least 12 people were reported killed in Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday, as the military said that three reservists were wounded by Hezbollah explosive drones.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces carried out a series of strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon after issuing evacuation warnings to nine villages.
Hezbollah and Israel have continued to attack each other since US President Donald Trump first announced a ceasefire on April 16, which has now largely unraveled, though fighting remains at a lower level than before.
On Saturday, the terror group launched several salvos of explosive-laden drones and rockets at Israeli forces.
One drone struck Israeli territory, close to the border with Lebanon, seriously injuring a reservist soldier and moderately wounding a reservist officer and another reservist soldier.
The troops were taken to Galilee Medical Center, which said the seriously wounded soldier underwent surgery and was now stable in the intensive care unit. The moderately wounded troops were scheduled for surgery later.
In another incident, the military said an explosive drone struck an unmanned engineering vehicle in southern Lebanon, causing damage. No injuries were caused.
Separately, several rockets launched by Hezbollah at troops in southern Lebanon were intercepted by air defenses, the IDF added.
Another explosive drone launched by Hezbollah was located in Israeli territory on Saturday, close to the border with Lebanon. The IDF said no damage or injuries were caused by the drone, and sappers were working to safely remove it from the area.
The incident was under further investigation, the military added.

Today, shipping companies are paying cryptocurrency tolls to Tehran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, as the Iranian government seeks to shield payments from seizure by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. Roughly $8 billion flowed through Iran’s cryptocurrency exchanges last year, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) moves billions more through foreign exchanges like Binance, where Chinese firms can secretly pay for Iranian oil without fear of U.S. retaliation.
More than a decade ago, however, the Iranian government was reluctant to embrace cryptocurrency, suspicious of possible U.S. involvement in the development of Bitcoin. The U.S. was dubious about the technology as well, seeing it principally as a way to sidestep financial controls.
“The U.S. government thinks Iran can use bitcoin to bypass all the sanctions and Iran thinks this is all a game by the CIA,” a spokesperson for CoinAva, Iran’s first crypto exchange, told CoinDesk in 2013. Even so, Iran’s National Cyberspace Center began the process of regulating digital currencies in March 2014, while looking for hedges against the pressure of U.S. sanctions.
The U.S. hesitance around cryptocurrency is evident in the emails of Jeffrey Epstein—a figure who was keenly interested in developing cryptocurrency and consulted on it with the U.S. Treasury Department. Epstein’s interventions came at a time when the U.S. was pursuing a détente with Iran over its nuclear program, and the growth and development of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were beginning to reshape the global financial landscape. Epstein was accompanied by Philip West, chairman of Steptoe, a law firm involved in sanctions-related work.
Epstein was more than familiar with the issue of Iranian sanctions since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and had extensive experience and interest in clandestine movements of capital. In the early 1980s, Epstein shared a penthouse office with Stan Pottinger, a lawyer who was moving embargoed arms through shell companies to fuel the war between Iran and Iraq. Epstein also worked at one point for Saudi financier Adnan Khashoggi, who used poorly regulated financial institutions, like the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, to launder money from covert arms sales, in what became known as the “Iran-Contra” affair.
According to Epstein’s notes from the meeting, officials from the Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes wanted the financier’s insight into how cryptocurrencies could be used for arms shipments and nuclear proliferation payments.

Israel established a secret military outpost in the Iraqi desert to support its air campaign against Iran and carried out airstrikes against Iraqi forces that nearly discovered it at the start of the war, people familiar with the matter, including senior U.S. officials, told The Wall Street Journal.
According to the sources, Israel built the facility shortly before the war began, with U.S. knowledge. It housed special forces and served as a logistics hub for the air force. Rescue teams were also stationed there in case Israeli pilots were shot down. No Israeli pilots were downed during the war.
When a U.S. F-15 was shot down near Isfahan, Israel offered to help, but American forces rescued the crew themselves. However, according to the report, Israel did carry out airstrikes to help secure the rescue operation.
The Journal said the Israeli base was nearly exposed in early March. Iraqi state media reported that a local shepherd spotted unusual military activity in the area, including helicopter flights, and that the Iraqi army sent forces to investigate. According to one official, Israel drove them away with airstrikes. Iraq’s government condemned the attack at the time, saying an Iraqi soldier was killed.

Police investigating alleged anti-Semitic slur at children’s netball game
NSW Police are investigating after a woman allegedly hurled an anti-Semitic slur during a children’s netball game in Sydney on Saturday morning.
A woman is being investigated by NSW Police after allegedly directing an anti-Semitic slur at Jewish players during a children’s netball game at Maroubra in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Saturday.
Police were called to the Heffron Park netball courts on Saturday morning and it was alleged that a parent watching from the sidelines had made the slur.
It’s understood that it is alleged the woman said “f**k the Jews” and “they should have all been eradicated”.
The woman was not arrested, and was given a move-on order by police.
In a statement on Sunday, the Saints Netball Club said it was aware of an allegation that a supporter had “made comments of an anti-Semitic nature directed at players of a competing club which is associated with the Jewish community”.
“The Saints Netball Club unequivocally condemns and disavows antisemitism in all its forms,” the club said.
“Such remarks do not reflect the values, principles, or standards of our club, our members, our players, or our wider community.”
It said it offered its “sincerest and most unreserved apologies to the Jewish community” and said the dehumanisation of Jewish people had no place in the sport or wider society.
