Deadly rodent viruses are expanding into new regions as the climate shifts

Climate change is set to push a group of dangerous rodent-borne viruses into parts of South America where they’ve never been seen before

 

This would expose communities with no prior immunity and no history of dealing with these diseases.

 

A new study maps out where that risk is heading over the next two to four decades, and the picture isn’t reassuring.

 

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of California, Davis, with funding from the Wellcome Trust.

 

The team built a machine learning model that combined climate projections, shifting rodent habitats, human population density, and transmission risk.

 

The model produces what amounts to an early warning map for arenaviral outbreaks across South America.
