Trump rewards MAGA darling Kari Lake with cushy new ambassador gig - US Ambassador to Jamaica

Top Trump ally Kari Lake has been tapped for a new job.

The failed Arizona gubernatorial and senatorial candidate is set to be appointed US Ambassador to Jamaica, according to nominations released by the White House Monday.

Lake will now have to be confirmed by the US Senate to the post, a feat she has yet to achieve in any of her previously selected roles.

Other notable nominations include Cameron Hamilton, who has been selected to lead the Federal Emergency Management Agency within the Department of Homeland Security for a second time.

Hamilton had been ousted by Kristi Noem after she moved to defund large parts of the agency, but he is up for another run at the job under the new leadership of Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Make America Healthy Again crusader Casey Means also had her nomination for the role of Surgeon General withdrawn by the White House.

Presently, Lake serves as a senior advisor to the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM). She was nominated to lead the Voice of America at the start of the Trump administration, but was never confirmed by the US Senate for the job.

The 56-year-old Lake is a former television anchor who became a vocal proponent of Trump's 2020 'big lie' - that widespread fraud cost him reelection.

That earned her two endorsements from the President, first when she ran and lost the 2022 Arizona governor's race for the Republicans to Democrat Katie Hobbs and, again, when she lost an Arizona Senate seat to Democrat Ruben Gallego two years later.

Despite a current role in the administration, it was reported last November that Lake had hoped to mount a third political run - this time for an Arizona House seat - which she later told the Daily Mail was not in the picture.

'That is not in my plans,' Lake said during a red carpet appearance at the then-newly renamed Trump Kennedy Center. 'I'm actually very happy working for the Trump administration,' she said, adding, 'I'm excited about work every day.'

She then made clear: 'So the answer is no.'

Earlier reporting by the Atlantic painted a pitiful picture of Lake waiting in the White House lobby to bend Trump's ear in October.

'Kari has been here for hours,' a White House aide revealed to the magazine. 'She's going to run and she's asking for an endorsement.'

Lake denied the Atlantic's reporting that she had been kept waiting for Trump to make her pitch. 'The President has always been very gracious and generous when I have requested time with him,' Lake said.

'If and when I decide to run for office, The Atlantic will be the last to know,' she also said.

In April 2024, amid Lake's Senate run, the Washington Post, citing five sources, reported that Trump was growing annoyed with Lake for her frequent trips to Mar-a-Lago, at one point gently suggesting she leave the Florida resort and instead hit the campaign trail.

While Trump won back the White House, including turning Arizona back to red from blue, Lake lost to Arizona's current Democrat Senator Ruben Gallego by 2.4 points that November.

The president then selected Lake to lead the United States Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America, which the twice-failed candidate attempted to shut down after it became a target of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency.

That effort had been hit by legal roadblocks, with Lake on uneven footing, having never been confirmed to her role by the US Senate.

Supreme Court Clears Way for Alabama to Adopt New House Map That Removes Majority-Black District

The state had argued that the high court’s recent ruling on race and redistricting required it to adjust its electoral map.

The U.S. Supreme Court late on May 11 cleared the way for Alabama to redraw its congressional election map to comply with the court’s landmark ruling limiting the use of race in redistricting.

The court’s new decision took the form of a brief, unsigned order.

The Supreme Court vacated lower court rulings that required Alabama to use a congressional map that included two majority-black districts out of the state’s seven districts.

The justices waived the usual waiting period and ordered that the new ruling take effect immediately.

Alabama and several other GOP-led states are currently in the process of an unusual mid-decade redistricting they hope will help Republicans retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the November elections.

The high court ruled last month in Louisiana v. Callais that race may be only a minor factor in redistricting rationales, not the predominant, overriding reason for how congressional district lines are drawn.

Federal courts had been incorrectly applying the Supreme Court precedents on the federal Voting Rights Act’s Section 2 nondiscrimination provisions “in a way that forces States to engage in the very race-based discrimination that the Constitution forbids,” the high court said in the Callais ruling.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall praised the new ruling, which he said “vindicated the state’s long held position” that the state should not have to draw electoral maps “around race.”

“For too long, unelected federal judges have had more say over Alabama’s elections than Alabama’s voters. That ended today,” Marshall said in a video posted on X.

“My job in this office was to put the legislature in the best possible legal position to draw a congressional map that favors Republicans, seven to zero,” he added.

Election attorney J. Christian Adams, president and general counsel of the Public Interest Legal Foundation, questioned whether Alabama may lawfully draw a map with no black-majority districts.

There is “no way in my view Alabama could have zero without violating the Voting Rights Act,” he told The Epoch Times.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor filed a dissenting opinion, which was joined by two justices, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Sotomayor noted that the majority’s new decision vacates a federal district court ruling that blocked Alabama’s 2023 redistricting plan and sent it back to that court for reconsideration in light of the high court’s new interpretation of the non-discrimination provisions of the federal Voting Rights Act.

“There is no reason to do so,” she said.

In addition to finding that Alabama’s plan violated the Voting Rights Act, the district court held in one of three cases before this court that the state violated the 14th Amendment by deliberately diluting the voter power of black citizens in Alabama, Sotomayor said.

“That constitutional finding of intentional discrimination is independent of, and unaffected by, any of the legal issues discussed in Callais,” so vacating the district court ruling is “inappropriate and will cause only confusion as Alabamians begin to vote in the elections scheduled for next week,” she said.

The Epoch Times reached out to Abha Khanna of Elias Law Group in Seattle for comment. Khanna is the attorney for lead respondent Marcus Caster, who was a Democratic candidate for the Alabama House of Representatives in 2022. No reply was received by publication time.

On May 8, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican, signed legislation authorizing a new primary election in anticipation of a favorable court ruling in the state’s ongoing redistricting litigation.

A May 19 primary will still take place, Ivey said in a statement at that time, but if the court-issued injunctions are lifted in Alabama’s redistricting case, she may call for a special election for certain state Senate and congressional districts where boundary lines would change as a result of a reversion to older district maps.

“With this special session successfully behind us, Alabama now stands ready to quickly act, should the courts issue favorable rulings in our ongoing redistricting cases,” Ivey said.

Vaccine Researcher [Poul Thorsen] Extradited to US, Arraigned on Fraud Charges

allegedly stole more than $1 million in U.S. grant money.

A researcher who co-authored papers that he and others said undercut claims that measles vaccination causes autism has been extradited to the United States on fraud charges 15 years after he was charged.

Poul Thorsen, 65, a Danish national, was transported from Germany to the United States on May 7 and arraigned on charges of federal wire fraud and money laundering, according to court filings and U.S. prosecutors.

A judge ordered Thorsen held without bail after he pleaded not guilty in a federal courtroom in Atlanta.

Thorsen is accused of stealing more than $1 million in grant money from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thorsen was working as a visiting scientist at the CDC in the 1990s when he convinced officials to award a grant to Denmark. The CDC awarded more than $11 million to Danish government agencies from 2000 to 2009 to study any relationship between autism and vaccines, among other matters. In 2002, Thorsen moved to Denmark and became the grant’s principal investigator—the person in charge of administering the money the CDC was providing for research.

Thorsen allegedly went on to submit papers that listed fake expenses, according to charging documents. The papers resulted in Aarhus University transferring money to accounts that officials believed belonged to the CDC, but were actually Thorsen’s personal accounts.

Thorsen is accused of using the money to buy, among other purchases, a home in Atlanta and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

“Poul Thorsen allegedly stole more than $1 million in federal grant money by submitting fabricated invoices and diverting funds to his personal bank accounts,” U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg said in a statement.

“Thorsen’s extradition reinforces a core principle: individuals who are accused in an indictment of defrauding the American people and misusing federally funded research will be pursued wherever they flee,” added Kelly Blackmon, special agent in charge at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General.

A lawyer representing Thorsen did not respond to a request for comment by time of publication.

Thorsen was originally charged in 2011. He had remained a fugitive until being arrested in Passau, Germany, on June 4, 2025.

In 2026, German authorities agreed to extradite Thorsen to the United States.

Thorsen has co-authored dozens of papers, including a study that researchers said showed that children who received a measles, mumps, rubella vaccine were less likely to be diagnosed with autism compared to children who did not receive the vaccine.

None of the papers appeared to have any markings noting the charges against him as of May 11.

…In June 2021, Wecht ruled that the prosecutor who brought the case against Bill Cosby was bound by the promise his predecessor, Bruce Castor, made to not prosecute Mr. Cosby. He wrote that Mr. Cosby relied on this promise when giving otherwise incriminating testimony in the civil case Andrea Constand brought against him in 2005….

In May 2026, Wecht left the Democratic Party to become a political independent, citing concerns of rising antisemitism within the Democratic party, stating that "increasingly, it has moved from the fringe to the mainstream. It is the duty of all good people to fight this virus, and to do so before it is too late."

In 1913, after practicing law for several years and becoming Cambria County Solicitor, Kephart was elected to the Superior Court of Pennsylvania without the support of any major party in a race that attracted national attention. He was subsequently elected to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1918, serving as an associate justice from 1919 until 1936, when he became chief justice.
