North Carolina: Auditor Reports 47,000% Rise in Autism Therapy Billings Over 5 Years
Dave Boliek, who was elected state auditor of North Carolina last year, revealed that in 2020 providers billed Health and Human Services about $1.4 million for autism therapy services. That number has since ballooned to $660 million on an annual basis, an increase of 47,000%.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is headed by Dr. Devdutta Sangvai and may have some culpability. NCDHHS reported that in 2025, about $544 million in Medicaid funds were spent on ‘Research Based Behavioral Health Therapy’ that aims to minimize behavioral challenges related to autism. The report also showed that there were just 3,844 users of these therapies in 2022 as opposed to 13,447 in 2025.
