John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the sole Democrat to oppose.

This latest round of cuts is expected to hit Meta's engineering and product teams in particular, and additional layoffs could come later in the year, said people familiar with the company's plans, who asked not to be named as the information is not public. -BBG

The layoffs follow Meta's reassignment of about 7,000 employees into newly created AI-focused teams on Monday.

Details are scant at the moment regarding the reason for the layoffs, but CEO Sasan Goodarzi sent an email to staff earlier in the day, saying that reducing complexity and simplifying the structure would help it deliver better ​products, to streamline operations and sharpen focus ​on its key bets including its AI efforts.

The company has signed multi-year deals with AI startups Anthropic and ​OpenAI to integrate their AI models into its software and add Intuit's personalized tax, finance, ‌accounting and ⁠marketing capabilities into Claude and ChatGPT.

Bloomberg data shows Intuit's total workforce was around 18,200 in mid-2025. If those figures are still accurate, the layoffs could affect upwards of 3,000 employees.

As of Tuesday's close, Intuit shares were down nearly 40% on the year amid AI fears disrupting the software stocks.

The acting head of the U.S. Department of Justice said on May 19 that the agency added new terms favorable to President Donald Trump to the settlement of the president’s lawsuit over alleged IRS leaking of his tax returns.

In a one-page addendum to the settlement, Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said on May 19 that the IRS would no longer pursue claims against Trump, members of his family, or his businesses over allegedly unpaid taxes.

The May 18 settlement, in which the president agreed to drop a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS, provided that an almost $1.8 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund would be established to compensate alleged victims of the weaponization of law enforcement.

Trump, two of his sons, and the Trump family business, had sued in federal court in Florida in January, alleging that the IRS and its parent agency, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, had failed to prevent a former contractor from leaking Trump’s tax returns to the media.

The plaintiffs alleged the agencies failed to take mandatory precautions to prevent the former IRS contractor from unlawfully obtaining access to their confidential tax records and giving that information to The New York Times and ProPublica between 2019 and 2020.

As part of the settlement, the plaintiffs themselves will receive “a formal apology but no monetary payment or damages of any kind,” the DOJ said in a May 18 statement. Continue…

According to the UK’s Covid Inquiry, whose fourth report was published in April, there was “in principle, nothing unlawful or inappropriate in the government monitoring publicly available social media to identify potential trends in disinformation or misinformation” during the pandemic period.

The same report, in declining to criticise the censorious activities of the UK Government during the pandemic, noted that the UK government’s Counter Disinformation Unit was required to ensure that its actions were “lawful, necessary and proportionate”.

On a careful reading of this language, the inquiry stops (just) short of expressly endorsing the full scope and extent of the government’s censorship operation. However, the relevant sections of the inquiry’s report create the distinct, and we can assume deliberate, impression that the CDU’s censorship operation was conducted in accordance with constitutional and democratic principles, and was not only justified but was necessary and proportionate.

As someone who was on the receiving end of that censorship operation, with the receipts to evidence the very broad scope of commentary that was judged by the CDU to be wrongful or dangerous, this came as a serious disappointment, albeit not a great surprise.

Some would argue that in a national emergency scenario, some degree of information monitoring and intervention might be justified.

The trouble with that argument is that one very quickly then has to grapple with the fact that – as we saw during the pandemic period – it’s precisely in moments of national crisis – moments where critical decisions must be made in complex situations – that contrasting views are most valuable and essential.

The anti-graft operation, carried out by several agencies together with the National Police’s internal investigations division, targeted the production of adult content, an illegal but reportedly thriving industry in Ukraine. During an interview on a CBC podcast called “Front Burner”, Globe and Mail columnist Andrew Coyne stated, “This is something that is being aided and abetted by what has to be called at this point in history a hostile foreign power. The United States under Donald Trump is not our friend.”

While the relationship between Canada and the U.S. is currently strained, it’s a stretch to call it a hostile foreign power. There is no evidence that the American government has been involved in aiding Alberta’s independence movement financially or politically.

Coyne implied that the act of holding a referendum in Alberta would be capitulating to alleged American ambitions to break up Canada stating, “Should we be aiding and abetting the designs of a hostile power to divide and destroy the country?”

President Trump’s 51st state jibes infuriated many Canadians, but if anything, they have fostered national unity. At least as far as Liberal support goes, anyway.

It’s irresponsible to accuse Canada’s ally and largest trading partner of having designs to destroy the country.

Coyne also said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith should say “let’s call this off” as far as a referendum is concerned because, “They didn’t follow the rules, to cite another controversy on the gathering of the petition signatures. The use of the voters list was highly improper and may well have compromised the signature gathering process.”

There have been no ties identified between the alleged use of voters’ lists by David Parker’s Centurion Project and the petitioning process managed by Stay Free Alberta.

In an opinion piece written for the Toronto Star, Gillian Steward claimed, “since the pipeline would run through B.C. Alberta needs B.C.'S co-operation.”

While pipeline proponents would certainly prefer to have British Columbia’s cooperation on energy infrastructure projects, it isn’t constitutionally required. The authority over interprovincial infrastructure projects is federally held.

Past B.C. premiers have been obstinate over pipeline projects but ultimately, they were unable to stop them.

B.C. Premier David Eby has had repeated outbursts in opposition to a proposed pipeline to the coast, but his permission isn’t required for the project.

Steward implied that no private proponents would invest in a line if a referendum were to be held and stated, “So Smith is going to have to give up her separatist aspirations if she wants that pipeline to become a reality.”

Premier Smith has never demonstrated any “separatist aspirations,” though she has been supportive of allowing citizens to express themselves democratically through referenda.

She has at no time used the threat of separation as leverage for energy project approvals.

Energy company executives have been consistent in pointing out how it's federal legislative roadblocks that keep them from committing to investing in new oil and gas projects in Canada. They have been agnostic on unity issues and never stated fear of an independence referendum as a deterrent to investment.

The federal government paid nearly $41,000 to Samson Cree First Nation in Maskwacis, Alberta, to participate in consultations on proposed coal mining effluent regulations, even though the nearest coal mine is roughly 110 kilometres away and located in a different watershed.

According to federal grant records published through the Government of Canada’s open data portal, Environment and Climate Change Canada awarded Samson Cree First Nation $40,698 under its “Preventing and Managing Pollution” program. The funding covers the period from March 6, 2026, to March 31, 2027.

The stated purpose of the funding was “Samson Cree First Nation’s Participation in Proposed Coal Mining Effluent Regulations Consultations.”

The payment was highlighted online by John Tomkinson, who questioned why taxpayers were funding consultations with a community geographically disconnected from the mining activity under discussion.

Federal consultation funding for Indigenous groups has become increasingly common in regulatory and resource-development processes, with departments routinely providing financial support to facilitate participation in environmental reviews, hearings, and policy consultations.

The practice has evolved into a permanent taxpayer-funded consultation industry, where grants are handed out regardless of a community’s direct proximity to the project or environmental impact zone.

The funding record lists Maskwacis, Alberta, as the recipient location. Maskwacis is situated south of Edmonton and well east and west of Alberta’s primary coal mining regions.

The Conservative Party of Canada presented a bill that would ensure Canadians have “access to and use cash” forever and ban implementation of a “digital dollar.”

Introduced recently by Conservative MP Ted Falk, Bill C-276 is titled “An Act to establish a framework for the continued access to and use of cash in Canada and to make related amendments to other Acts.”

“The Minister must develop and implement a framework to ensure continued access to cash in Canada,” the bill reads.

The bill also calls to “protect the ability of persons, including businesses, in Canada to continue to use cash despite the availability of digital currencies, including cryptocurrencies.”

Bill C-276 mandates that the “long-term viability of Canada’s cash infrastructure” be kept in place.

The bill also calls for changes to Canada’s Currency Act so that any form of a digital “dollar” will be banned.

“The Bank shall not issue a digital form of the dollar,” the bill states.

Falk noted that the bill’s goal is to protect Canadians’ ability to use cash and to ban the Bank of Canada from issuing central bank digital currency (CBDC).

“Cash is freedom – it is private, reliable, and you don’t need an app or computer to use it,” Falk said. “Canadian customers should always have the option to use it.”

The bill will also mandate that there are no barriers to using cash for donations to charities, religious groups, and community organizations. Continue…

CBC has paused production on a satirical series after backlash over claims the program used misleading tactics to secure interviews and target retired RCMP officers and conservatives. The project, Northland Tales, is a co-production between CBC and APTN and was described by CBC as an entertainment series developed by CBC Entertainment, not CBC News. The broadcaster says it is now reviewing footage after concerns surfaced about how participants were approached.

“It is important for us in the execution that this entertainment series does not negatively impact our news brand. With that context, we are currently pausing on production while we assess the existing footage,” CBC’s statement read, according to the Toronto Sun.

CBC also defended the format, stating: “Social experiments and satirical prank shows are a long-established television format used by broadcasters and streamers around the world, including many public broadcasters. In this case, the Indigenous creators are using the format for Northland Tales. A form of comedy is being deployed to increase better understanding of historical injustices against Indigenous peoples and support truth and reconciliation in Canada."

The controversy centers on reports that participants were allegedly told they were taking part in documentary-style interviews or tribute segments before the tone of the production shifted. One episode reportedly involved retired RCMP officers being flown to Vancouver at the show’s expense, appearing in uniform, and being told they were participating in a project called “After the Call” and being honored for their service. They then had their phones taken away and were scolded over injustices carried out by the RCMP over its history. Friends of those who participated said the officers were humiliated and devastated. Winnipeg police say they have dismantled a massive organized crime network tied to the Hells Angels, the Wolf Pack Alliance and a Mexican cartel in what authorities are calling the largest drug seizure in Manitoba history.

Police announced Wednesday that more than 30 people have been arrested following a sweeping multi-agency investigation that began in May 2024 and stretched across several provinces.

Investigators allege the criminal network imported large quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl into Manitoba through sophisticated trafficking operations linked to upper levels of organized crime in Canada.

According to Winnipeg Police Service officials, the drugs were smuggled across the U.S. border in commercial vehicles before being warehoused in Alberta and Ontario and eventually transported into Manitoba through mail services, courier deliveries, commercial trucking and private vehicles equipped with hidden compartments.

Police said the investigation culminated in March with the arrest of 33 suspects facing a combined 174 charges related to drug trafficking, conspiracy and possession of proceeds of crime.

Twenty-nine of those arrested are from Manitoba, while the remaining suspects are from Alberta and Ontario.

Authorities seized illicit drugs with an estimated street value exceeding $37.2 million, along with 14 firearms, approximately $825,000 in cash and 1.5 million illegal cigarettes. Continue…

Ontario is restricting the purchase and use of Chinese-made drones by the provincial government and police, citing security concerns.

The restriction is part of the government’s plan to protect provincial data and strengthen security across the province, and includes an immediate ban on the use of Chinese drones in highly sensitive provincial police operations, the province said on May 20.

Ontario currently uses drones for law enforcement, emergency management, wildfire monitoring, road and bridge inspections, and environmental monitoring.

The province said it is in the process of phasing out broader government use of Chinese-made drones, which will be replaced with Canadian-made alternatives. It will also hold talks with Canadian drone manufacturers and industry stakeholders in the coming weeks to discuss procurement under its Buy Ontario initiative, the province said.

The Buy Ontario Act was passed in December 2025 to prioritize Ontario goods and services in public procurement.

The move is partly driven by Chinese national security laws that require companies to disclose data to Beijing upon request, even if the data is stored outside the country. Continue…

Co-hosting the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Canada will cost slightly over $1 billion, according to the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO).

Canada will host 13 of the 104 soccer games played across North America, Mexico, and Canada between June 11 and July 19. Six will be played in Toronto, and seven in Vancouver.

Around $473 million in funding will come from the federal government, while $593 million will come from other levels of government, according to a PBO report published May 20.

The funding from the federal government includes $220 million from the department of Canadian heritage, $145 million from Public Safety Canada, and $79 million from the RCMP.

B.C. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger said in April that the province would receive $100 million from the federal government for World Cup security, but that the final amount would evolve as security arrangements were finalized.

The PBO said in its May 20 analysis that Canada is expected to spend $82 million per game. By contrast, it cost Russia $109.5 million per game to host the tournament in 2018, Brazil $125 million per game in 2014, and South Africa $101.3 million per game in 2010. Continue…

Two advocacy groups are calling on the Prince Edward Island government to scrap a regulatory investigation into land purchases and activities by organizations allegedly linked to the Chinese Communist Party, and replace it with an independent public inquiry.

Democracy Watch and the Save PEI Association say the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC), which is carrying out the investigation, has conflicts of interest, as its chair held a role in provincial government when the land purchases were approved, according to a May 19 news release.

The organizations called for a “fully independent, expert inquiry” in a letter to P.E.I. Land Minister Darlene Compton, Premier Robert Lantz, and opposition leaders on May 19. They said they see “no evidence” that the IRAC investigation has “the independence, scope, resources or expertise needed to be effective.”

The advocacy groups say the organizations under investigation—the Great Enlightenment Buddhist Institute (GEBIS) and Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute (GWBI)—are headed by Bliss & Wisdom Monastic Corporation, which they say is the largest employer in P.E.I. and has “massive operations” in Taiwan, China, and across Canada and the United States.

Both GEBIS and GWBI were identified as the focus of the IRAC probe launched last February, when then-Housing Minister Steven Myers announced the investigation into their land holdings.

Conservative MP and foreign affairs critic Michael Chong met with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te on May 20 to discuss Canada-Taiwan relations and the need for Canadian MPs to continue to visit Taiwan to foster bilateral relations.

According to a readout of the meeting, Chong and Lai also discussed Taiwan’s “importance as a democracy at the front lines of threats from an authoritarian state,” peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region, support for Taiwan’s “meaningful” participation in international fora, as well as trade and investment.

Lai commented on the meeting on social media, saying he was glad to meet with the Tory MP, who is also the vice-chair of the House of Commons foreign affairs and international development committee.

“We deeply value the House of Commons’ support for Taiwan’s international participation & look forward to even closer Taiwan-Canada ties,” Lai said in a May 20 post on X.

Chong also met with Taiwan’s Minister of Mainland Affairs Council, Chiu Chui-cheng. They discussed peace and security in the Taiwan Strait, relations between China and Taiwan, the opportunity for further Canada-Taiwan exchanges, and Taiwan’s right to engage with the global community, says a readout of the meeting.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is summoning Israel’s ambassador to Canada in response to the treatment of activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, which Israel detained earlier this week.

Activists say 11 Canadians were among those detained when Israel’s navy intercepted 50 boats in international waters near Cyprus on May 18.

Canada is one of several countries planning to recall their diplomats from Israel following the release of a video by the country’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, which mocks detained activists from the Gaza flotilla. The video was posted on Ben-Gvir’s X account on May 20.

The footage seems to show the minister mocking the activists, saying they should remain imprisoned for a “long, long time.” The activists were travelling on a fleet of vessels that tried to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

The footage shows dozens of people with their hands tied behind their backs, their faces against the ground. It also shows a woman yelling “free, free Palestine,” before being forced to the floor by security agents.
