Iran for its part has recently vowed to never transfer its nuclear material out of the Islamic Republic, calling the issue a matter of national sovereignty and energy security which it alone has say over. This after even Russia offered to take it.
The newly reported five conditions by the US side further states that the US does not intend to release more than 25% of frozen Iranian assets. Tehran has demanded the dropping of all US sanctions as a key basis for lasting settlement.

Annual electricity power generation from utility-scale solar projects is predicted to exceed output from coal for the first time ever in 2026 on grids run by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
This year, solar power generation within the ERCOT-run grids, which cover most of the state, is expected to be 78 billion kilowatt hours (BkWh), 30 percent higher than the 60 BkWh generated by coal, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in a May 13 statement, while adding that solar generation has been steadily increasing within ERCOT.
For 2027, annual solar generation is projected at 99 BkWh, a 50 percent lead over coal’s 66 BkWh.
“Natural gas remains the dominant source of electricity generation in ERCOT, accounting for an average 44 percent of electricity generation from 2021 to 2025,” the agency said.
However, “solar’s share of the generation mix has increased from 4 percent to 12 percent in those years, while coal’s share has decreased from 19 percent to 13 percent,” it said.

Pakistan, which was the mediator of the U.S.-Iran talks and is passing messages from one to the other, appears to have used well its close ties with both Qatar and Iran to negotiate the successful imports of two tankers with Qatari LNG.
Pakistan has relied on Qatar's term LNG supply for years, but the war in the Middle East has led to the shutdown of Qatari LNG production and exports.
Without Qatar's LNG, Pakistan has been reeling from an intensifying energy crisis with power outages and fuel rationing.
Thanks to a bilateral Pakistan-Iran agreement, two vessels carrying Qatari LNG arrived in Pakistan in recent days after successfully passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

During the calls, MbZ argued that the states that formed the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) must act as a bloc to attack Iran alongside the US and Israel. However, his fellow Gulf leaders told him it was "not their war," according to the report.
When Saudi Crown Prince MbS refused to go along with the scheme, already shaky ties between the UAE and Saudi Arabia were further strained. The Saudi refusal also contributed to the Emirates' decision to leave OPEC and OPEC+, the oil-producing cartel, and deepen its existing ties to Israel.
The UAE ultimately carried out several strikes against Iran without support from other Gulf states in early March and in April. Iran targeted US bases and oil facilities in Saudi Arabia with drones in the first days of the war. Federal departments are finding new ways to work around Ottawa’s “Buy Canadian” directive, according to internal documents obtained through Access to Information requests, raising fresh questions about how strictly the policy is being applied across government.
Blacklock's Reporter says an internal memo from the Department of Agriculture indicates officials will comply with the procurement rules only when doing so does not add extra cost, delay projects, or conflict with what the department considers the “public interest.”
The approach effectively leaves broad discretion for exemptions in practice.
“The definition of ‘Canadian,’ including origin and content rules, will need clear and consistent interpretation across departments,” the October 31 memo states.
It also warns that supply shortages in specialized sectors, including equipment, could reduce competition and stretch delivery timelines, potentially driving up costs where domestic capacity is limited.
The document further notes that exceptions would apply where Canadian goods or suppliers are unavailable, would cause undue delay, or are deemed not in the public interest.
Approval for such exemptions would rest at the associate deputy minister level.
The memo, prepared for discussions with the Treasury Board on implementing the policy, also signals an intent to keep definitions narrow and flexible.
“Clarity on key implementation elements, definitions of Canadian content, exception processes and alignment with trade obligations will be essential,” it says, adding that consistent guidance across departments is needed to avoid delays or cost overruns.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the Buy Canadian initiative on September 5, framing it as part of a broader effort to strengthen domestic industry.
“Canada is on a mission to build Canada strong,” he said at the time.
However, the policy’s practical meaning has already been described as limited. Housing Minister Gregor Robertson said on March 19 that “Buy Canadian” requirements would not be rigid and would initially target roughly 30% Canadian content in federal contracting.
“Across government, it will vary,” Robertson said.
“We’re not being rigid about this because there are many supply chains we still need to improve across the country to make sure we can supply Canadian materials at affordable rates for the infrastructure and housing that we build.”
Further clarification from the Department of Public Works, submitted to the Senate national finance committee on May 1, added another layer of flexibility.
The department stated that companies could be considered “Canadian suppliers” even if they are 100% foreign-owned, provided they maintain a business presence in the country.
According to the submission, a Canadian supplier is defined as an entity with a permanent place of business in Canada that is identifiable, accessible during normal business hours, and engaged in day-to-day operations domestically.
Foreign-owned firms may qualify so long as they have a Canadian address, file taxes in Canada, and carry out business activities within the country.
The report makes clear that the policy does not impose any ownership threshold, meaning control and capital can remain entirely offshore while still qualifying under federal procurement rules.
Critics argue the evolving definitions and broad exemption criteria risk turning the Buy Canadian policy into more of a branding exercise than a strict procurement standard, particularly as departments continue to emphasize cost, timing, and trade obligations over domestic content requirements.

A Canadian who recently returned from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak has developed symptoms and tested presumptively positive for the virus, according to B.C. health officials.
The patient, who began experiencing mild symptoms including fever and headache two days ago, was taken to a hospital in Victoria for assessment and testing, where a “presumptive positive” result was confirmed Friday by the BC Centre for Disease Control.
The individual remains in stable condition in hospital isolation and health officials are awaiting confirmation of the test result from a Winnipeg microbiology lab, B.C. Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry said during a press conference on May 16. Results from the lab tests are expected in the next two days, she added.
A presumptive test is a preliminary screening method used to indicate whether a specific substance is likely present, producing rapid, typically qualitative results—often through a colour change. Since these tests are sensitive but not fully specific, they cannot confirm a result on their own and must be followed by more detailed laboratory testing before a final determination can be made.
Of the four Canadians who had been passengers on the hantavirus-struck MV Hondius and returned to Canada on May 10, three—including the individual who tested positive and their spouse—are isolating in hospital, while the fourth is isolating at home.
“Out of an abundance of caution, a third individual who was in secure lodging for isolation has been transferred to hospital for assessment and testing,” a statement from Health Canada reads. Continue…
