New York-based nuclear technology company BLSK Energy announced on May 18 that it had signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in Illinois to commercialize the method.

Pyroprocessing (or pyrochemical processing) is a high-temperature metallurgical process that could enable the reuse of nuclear fuel. When used with fast reactors, it could extract up to 100 times more energy from uranium.

The company plans to launch a pilot recycling facility by 2034 that would convert nuclear waste into material suitable for advanced fast reactors. "The path ahead is ambitious but achievable," Bruce Landrey, BLSK Energy's managing director and co-founder, said.

Maclean's columnist Stephen Maher recently dismissed Alberta independence supporters as a "minority with a stupid idea," adding that their "illusions are not everyone else's problem." Calling Albertans stupid does not answer their arguments. It only proves their point.

Insults are not arguments. And Maher's comments reveal a remarkable double standard in Canadian political culture.

For decades, Quebec separatism was treated as a legitimate political movement. Federal politicians, journalists, academics, and constitutional experts spent generations debating Quebec's place in Confederation. Ottawa commissioned studies. Governments negotiated constitutional reforms. The country held two national unity referendums.

Nobody suggested that millions of Quebecers were stupid for questioning whether Confederation served their interests. Nobody dismissed Quebec's concerns as "illusions."

Canadians were told that Quebec's grievances needed to be heard, understood, and addressed. Why is Alberta different?

Why was it reasonable for Quebecers to ask whether Canada was working for them, but unreasonable for Albertans to ask the same question?

In a podcast interview with Laura Babcock, Forever Canadian founder Thomas Lukaszuk said that the independence debate will continue to rage in Alberta for at least two more years after the October 19 referendum date if voters choose option “B”.

He is suggesting Alberta would be hung up for years in uncertainty due to the delay in holding the second referendum.

Lukaszuk is misinterpreting a clause in the Alberta Citizen Initiative Act that prohibits beginning a petition to invoke a referendum within one year before or after a scheduled general election. Alberta is expected to have a general election held in October 2027.

The clause only applies to citizen-initiated referenda. The office of the premier has the authority to schedule a referendum at any time. Smith could even have a referendum ballot presented during the general election.

There has been no timeline suggested by Premier Danielle Smith for a binding referendum if Albertans should choose that option. She is not bound to sit on the issue until late 2028 as Mr. Lukaszuk has implied.

Toronto Star writer Linda McQuaig claimed the Carney government was “coddling” Alberta in a column entitled, “When will Liberal prime ministers realize appeasing Alberta will never work?” She argues that Liberal prime ministers keep making the same mistake: trying to appease Alberta with major concessions on oil and gas infrastructure, only to get nothing in return.

Is that the nature of the federation?

Are federal approvals of projects in provinces to be considered “concessions” to be handed out grudgingly by the government, with an expectation of eternal gratitude from the recipient provinces?

The Matawinie Graphite Mine and the Contrecœur Container Terminal Project in Quebec have never been called concessions to the province, though there is an active sovereigntist movement there. Was approving those projects an act of appeasement, or was it simply motivated by an intention of fostering national economic development?

McQuaig trots out the tired canard of Canada having bought the Trans Mountain Pipeline for Alberta. She frames Albertans as ingrates who have no right to question the merits of the federation when they have been handed such a gift. Continue…

Instructor in Human Resource Management at Capilano University, Trevor McFadyen wrote a Globe and Mail column where he said, “Alberta separatism increasingly resembles not a serious constitutional project, but a cathartic temper tantrum that threatens to implode and take Albertans with it.”

This column is the latest in a string of strong anti-independence voices from central-Canadian outlets, landing after Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s referendum announcement. It follows in a theme of insulting dismissiveness of the concerns being expressed by well over a third of Albertans who feel it may be time to leave the federation.

The current independence movement in Alberta is much deeper than a temper tantrum. It is the culmination of decades of alienation due to restrictive and even hostile policies from Ottawa that have impacted Alberta’s economy and social well-being.

McFadyen then goes into the prevarication that the movement is a product of foreign interference saying, “Foreign influencers and online networks are amplifying grievance and animosity online. The result is governance by rage and resentment.”

Feds spent nearly $500,000 on UN Climate Conference accommodations in Brazil

The federal government spent nearly half a million dollars on accommodations alone for its delegation to the United Nations climate conference in Belém, Brazil, according to records obtained through an Order Paper question filed by Conservative MP Carol Anstey.

The records show Ottawa spent $482,800 on accommodations for COP30 delegates, part of a broader bill that exceeded $1.6 million once transportation, per diems and Canada's conference pavilion were included.

Canada sent approximately 240 delegates to the conference, drawn from Environment and Climate Change Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Agriculture Canada, Global Affairs Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Parks Canada.

According to the records reviewed by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), one of the federal government's preferred accommodations was a property known as "Athenea's Garden," where a three-bedroom apartment cost taxpayers more than $40,000 for a 20-night stay. In another case, the government paid $1,313 per night for a one-bedroom apartment.

"You know you're spending too much money when you could have saved money by booking a penthouse with a jacuzzi," said CTF Federal Director Franco Terrazzano. "When the government spends more than a thousand dollars a night on a one-bedroom apartment in Brazil, taxpayers have every right to question whether bureaucrats are serious about helping the environment or if they're just looking for an expensive taxpayer-funded getaway."

The CTF compared the government's accommodation choices to alternative lodging options available in the area and found a three-bedroom penthouse complete with a jacuzzi and barbecue that would have cost roughly $5,000 for the same 20-night period. The organization noted that the alternative property was located closer to the conference venue than Athenea's Garden.

Beyond accommodations, taxpayers spent another $297,400 on transportation and $39,000 on per diems, averaging roughly $3,400 per delegate.

Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi on May 29 in Ottawa and measures were taken to limit media coverage of the event.

The handshake between the two men was initially supposed to only be captured by official photographers, as per the prime minister’s itinerary released by his office.

After some pushback from the Parliamentary Press Gallery, media were allowed to briefly enter Carney’s office across Parliament Hill to capture a handshake with Wang. After less than 30 seconds cameras were asked to leave the room by a cabinet press secretary.

Neither Wang nor Carney made any comments to reporters. No press conference was scheduled for that day.

The Epoch Times reached out the Prime Minister’s Office but didn’t hear back.

Canada Enters Technical Recession as GDP Growth Stalls

Canada’s economy saw no growth in the first quarter of 2026 following a decline in the final quarter of 2025, according to Statistics Canada data released on May 29.

When annualized, the data points to GDP contraction in two consecutive quarters, which meets the technical definition of a recession. Before the data was released, economists had largely expected growth of 1.5 percent of GDP on an annualized basis in the first quarter of 2026.

On a quarterly basis, Canada narrowly escapes the technical definition of a recession, given GDP fell 0.2 percent in the last quarter of 2025, and came in flat in the first quarter of 2026.

The last time Canada entered a technical recession was during the oil shock in the mid-2010s and at the beginning of the COVID-19 period. At that time, GDP was negative for two consecutive quarters on an annualized and quarterly basis.

While real GDP remained flat in the first quarter, there was an increase of 0.2 percent in GDP per capita due to a shrinking population, says Statistics Canada. GDP per capita is often used to measure prosperity and quality of life.

The statistics agency says imports rose by 2.9 percent in the first quarter of 2026, with metal products and scrap metal making up around half of the rise, and both being driven by imports of gold. Anand said Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have established an “ambitious vision” for a “recalibrated relationship” between Canada and China, including in the fields of trade, investment, and public security.

“At the same time, each of our countries must address critical issues and priorities to ensure the safety and security of our peoples,” Anand said, without elaborating.

A former child soldier from Sierra Leone who dodged deportation from Canada for a decade has been sentenced to five months in jail for returning to this country illegally.

Ibrahim Jalloh, a convicted fraudster and drug trafficker, was ordered out of the country in June 2012 for “serious criminality,” but he wasn’t actually deported until Dec. 29, 2023. Jalloh was sentenced earlier this spring in Alberta’s Court of Justice after police found him in Calgary on Dec. 31, 2025, contrary to an order not to return to Canada.

“He deliberately entered Canada in the face of knowing that he was not allowed to do so. He did not enter by accident, nor did he enter believing that he was permitted to be in Canada. Who is Lawrence Bishnoi?

Founder and kingpin of the Bishnoi gang, Lawrence Bishnoi was born on Feb. 12, 1993, in Dutarawali, a village in India’s Punjab region. A law-school graduate, he has been in jail in his home country since 2015, with multiple charges and accusations against him.

Currently in the Sabarmati jail in the city of Ahmedabad, Bishnoi is said to have been moved around different prisons for his safety and because of his ability to break jail rules.
