Fact check: Mark Carney rewrote Alberta oil sands history in pipeline announcement

https://www.rebelnews.com/fact_check_mark_carney_rewrote_alberta_oil_sands_history_in_pipeline_announcement

Prime Minister Mark Carney tried to present himself as a “proud Albertan” during last week’s pipeline announcement with the Alberta government. Still, in doing so, he badly mangled the history of Alberta’s oil sands development.

Carney claimed:

“When I was born just north of the Alberta border in Fort Smith, the oil sands were just a concept, a curiosity to most, and a dream to but a few builders.”

That is historically false.

By the time Carney was born in 1965, Alberta’s oil sands industry had already been under active research and industrial development for decades. Continue…

Fact check: US Ambassador Pete Hoekstra has no ties to Alberta’s sovereignty movement

https://www.rebelnews.com/fact_check_us_ambassador_pete_hoekstra_has_no_ties_to_alberta_s_sovereignty_movement

In a piece published by NDP-affiliated PressProgress, then hyped by National Newswatch, it was implied that a shadowy cabal of MAGA influencers linked to none other than the current US ambassador to Canada was tied to the activities of the Centurion Project and sovereignty movement in Alberta.

Centurion Project founder David Parker claims to have been inspired to develop his organization around an app created by an American group called 10XVotes. The group 10XVotes is based in Michigan and was active in promoting Republican candidates in the 2024 American federal election.

In an astounding leap of guilt by loose association, PressProgress determined that Hoekstra was personally acquainted to the stepfather of the founder of 10XVotes.

Not only that, but the US ambassador had been once seen in a 10xVotes’ Tucker Carlson and Kid Rock VIP suite. It should be noted that VIP suites such as that will see hundreds of invitees come and go during an event. Continue…

Fact Check: Eby claims Alberta projects are not being prioritized due to threats of separation

https://www.rebelnews.com/fact_check_alberta_projects_are_not_being_prioritized_due_to_threats_of_separation

B.C. Premier David Eby issued a statement saying, “It cannot be the case that the projects that get prioritized in Canada are those where a premier threatens to leave the country.”

The statement was released in response to the memorandum of understanding signed between Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney, which may one day lead to a new pipeline to the West Coast.

Premier Smith has never threatened to leave the country. However, she has repeatedly stated she is a federalist who wants to see what she calls a “sovereign Alberta within a united Canada.”

The projects being prioritized in Canada by the federal government are listed on the Major Projects Office website.

They include six projects in British Columbia and none in Alberta. If the intent of the independence movement has been to strongarm project support from the federal government, it has failed dismally.

Verdict

Alberta projects have never been prioritized by the Liberals.

Tory MP Chong Meets With Taiwanese Trade Minister, Gives Update on Trip Amid China’s Warning

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/tory-mp-chong-meets-with-taiwanese-trade-minister-gives-update-on-trip-amid-chinas-warning-6027538?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

Conservative MP and foreign affairs critic Michael Chong met with Taiwan’s Trade Representative Jen-Ni Yang on May 18 to discuss Canada–Taiwan economic ties and diplomatic relations.

Chong’s May 18–21 trip to Taiwan also includes planned meetings with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Ming-chi, as well as additional officials at the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei.

“MP Chong discussed several items with Minister Yang, including: Canada-Taiwan trade and investment, including a potential Canada-Taiwan trade arrangement; Canadian imports of steel from Taiwan; Taiwan’s application to the CPTPP [Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership],” according to a May 18 release from Chong.

Chong added that he and Yang also discussed Canada–Taiwan relations more broadly.

Taiwan applied to join the CPTPP in 2021 about one week after China. However, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) opposes Taiwan taking part in international organizations as a separate nation since it regards Taiwan as part of its territory.

Ottawa has never formally endorsed Taiwan being accepted to join the free trade agreement, which currently consists of 12 member nations including Canada, Japan, Australia, the U.K., Mexico, Chile, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Continue…

Liberals are playing legal hardball with First Nations over drinking water

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/liberals-fight-first-nations-over-drinking-water

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government is playing legal hardball with First Nations fighting for clean drinking water — and First Nations are fighting back.

Interviews and hundreds of pages of court documents reviewed by the Investigative Journalism Bureau (IJB) reveal this marked shift primarily on three fronts.

In Alberta, Canada pulled the plug on settlement talks involving four nations. In Ontario, it is using a legal tactic against another that appears to contradict its own guidelines for government lawyers. And nationally, it is appealing a summary judgment that handed First Nations a victory late last year, arguing the federal court judge erred in finding Canada owes First Nations a duty of care on drinking water.

Meanwhile, some First Nations are taking the government back to court, alleging it is breaching its obligations under a separate drinking-water settlement agreement hammered out in 2021.

Another nation plans to ask a court to declare a right to clean drinking water for First Nations — something Canada has fought in court despite ministers’ declarations backing such a right.

Meanwhile, Canada is keeping the costs of these court battles a secret.

The ramped-up legal tussles come more than a decade after former prime minister Justin Trudeau pledged to end long-term drinking water advisories and as Carney tells First Nations Canada wants “stronger nation-to-nation relationships” and to build infrastructure, “including housing and water.” Continue…

'Gross mismanagement' and other cases of wrongdoing found at Immigration department: report

An executive engaging in “gross mismanagement” by giving preferential treatment to a romantic partner, another executive attempting to hire a niece and an employee holding down another full-time job in the public service.

Those are among the cases of misconduct and wrongdoing found at Immigration, Citizenship and Refugee Canada (IRCC), which is the latest department to publish their report on misconduct and wrongdoing for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

The cases ranged from the innocuous such as calling in sick to attend a conference, to blogging as a self-identified Canadian diplomat where they expressed political views and “discussed aspects of their work at the embassy, including private conversations with embassy staff and views on the country’s people and government.”

Some other founded cases include cases of racism, sexual harassment, claiming overtime not worked and an employees providing false references in a staffing process that led to an acting opportunity elsewhere in government.

In total, IRCC said it had 105 cases of misconduct and wrongdoing within the department leading to a handful of terminations. Continue…

'Zionism won': Jews earned Israel, Ben Shapiro tells Toronto audience

https://nationalpost.com/news/zionism-won-jews-earned-israel-ben-shapiro-tells-toronto-audience

Ben Shapiro says most people, Jews included, often mistakenly define Zionism.

The superstar American pundit said during a Toronto symposium on Sunday that Zionism is not about Jews having the right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland. Instead, he said, it’s self-determination that is backed up with action.

A people have to earn their state, he said — and he made it clear he believes Jews created a very successful state on the land of their ancestors. “It turns out that if you want a state, you have to earn it, you have to show on a moral level that you will become a good and positive state, and most of all, you have to do the work to build the state. You have to be able to defend it yourself. You have to be able to actually create and innovate. Well, Zionism won, the baby was born, and that’s why there is a state of Israel today,” he said.

Modern Zionism is simply: the Jewish state “should not be exterminated,” and Israel should not be held to standards applied to no other nation on earth. Continue…

Hamas memos show Canadian-funded charities worked with terror group, NGO says

https://nationalpost.com/news/hamas-memos-show-canadian-funded-charities-worked-with-terror-group-ngo-says

According to a report by an Israeli NGO, Hamas’s own internal memos show it has been working in tandem with Canadian government‑funded charities and non‑governmental organizations.

The documents, which the Israeli army says it seized during its Gaza counteroffensive, detail how the terror organization allegedly infiltrated and exploited international NGOs operating in the Strip.

National Post was given exclusive access to electronic scans of what are said to be the original Arabic documents, as well as English translations, by NGO Monitor, a Jerusalem-based non-profit that works to hold non-governmental organizations accountable, particularly on matters relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While National Post was not able to independently verify the documents, the Israel Defence Forces says the documents are authentic.

According to a Dec. 11, 2022, memo, the Canadian government gave over $300,000 to a project proposed by the U.S.-based Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and implemented by the Ajyal Association for Creativity and Development, a Gazan NGO.

The document the IDF says it retrieved indicates that the project’s beneficiaries were selected from a list provided by the Hamas-run Ministry of Social Development, and includes details of security screenings conducted by Hamas on all the Ajyal staff working on the project. The Post contacted Ajyal for comment but did not receive a response by deadline.

There were allegedly 37 “team members” on the ground, including one listed as being aligned with Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a listed terrorist organization in Canada.

Global Affairs Canada did not directly address the Post’s request for information on this specific project, and CRS did not respond to several requests for comment. However, according to Canadian government records, CRS was given grants of nearly $6.5 million in 2014, close to $10 million in 2019 and around $210,000 in 2020, all from Global Affairs Canada. Ottawa spent more than $1 million on Yukon 'Indigenous food systems' project

https://www.rebelnews.com/ottawa_spent_more_than_1_million_on_yukon_indigenous_food_systems_project

A federal agency handed more than $1 million to a small Yukon school board to promote “Indigenous food systems,” according to records tabled before the Senate agriculture committee.

According to a story broken by Blacklock's, the funding came through the federal government’s Northern Isolated Community Initiatives Fund, a program that costs taxpayers roughly $6 million annually and is set to run until 2027.

According to the records, the Yukon First Nation Education Directorate received a total of $1,015,646 from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.

The largest portion of the funding, $845,000, went toward planning a “traditional processing kitchen” in Whitehorse.

“This one-year project focused on completing architectural and detailed design plans for a centralized traditional and local foods commercial kitchen,” the agency told senators.

According to the agency, the proposed facility would support the processing and storage of wild game in an urban setting and help promote traditional food-processing knowledge in First Nations curriculum. Continue…

Carbon tax 2.0 is driving investment out of Canada, warns Fraser Institute

https://www.rebelnews.com/carbon_tax_2_0_is_driving_investment_out_of_canada_warns_fraser_institute

The Fraser Institute estimates the industrial carbon tax would shrink Alberta’s economy by 2%, cost workers roughly $1,730 annually in lost income, and eliminate more than 10,000 jobs in the province. Nationally, the policy is projected to reduce GDP by 1.3% and wipe out more than 50,000 jobs across Canada.

A new report from the Fraser Institute warns Canada will remain economically uncompetitive unless Ottawa abandons a slate of anti-energy policies, including the federal industrial carbon tax.

The commentary comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney reached a new agreement with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on industrial carbon pricing tied to a proposed West Coast pipeline framework.

According to the Fraser Institute, Alberta’s oil and gas investment has collapsed by nearly 61% since 2014, falling from $64.7 billion to $25.4 billion in 2024 after adjusting for inflation.

The institute points to a combination of federal policies introduced under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, including Bill C-69, Bill C-48, methane regulations, emissions caps and carbon taxes.

While Ottawa eliminated the consumer carbon tax last year, the industrial carbon tax remains fully intact.

“The industrial carbon tax was originally set to increase from $95 per tonne to $170 per tonne by 2030,” the report states. “According to recent analysis, this policy would impose substantial costs on Canadians—particularly Albertans.” Continue…
