Columnist Andrew Coyne weighed into the Alberta separation debate with a novel theory: that if Alberta ever left Confederation, it shouldn't assume it would leave with all of its territory, including the parts containing oil and gas.

"Its wealth?" Coyne wrote. "Among the most absurd assumptions in this whole surreal debate is the idea that Alberta… would depart with its entire current territory — including the parts with the oil."

Fact check: Did CBC allow 'experts' to try to rewrite the treaties?

Guests appearing on the state broadcaster made dramatic claims about the treaties covering Alberta. There's only one problem, the words in those treaties contradict these so-called experts' claims.

CBC recently quoted two First Nations leaders and an Indigenous politics professor arguing that Alberta has no path to separation because treaty lands were never “ceded, given up, yielded or surrendered.”

“Alberta can't separate. They simply cannot. They do not have the authority,” said professor Danette Starblanket.

Starblanket's argument wasn't merely that separation would be difficult or constitutionally messy. She made a broader claim: treaty territories were never “ceded, given up, yielded or surrendered,” that First Nations maintain authority over those territories, and because treaties helped create Canada itself, they cannot simply be violated.

Dramatic claim. There's only one problem: the treaties themselves say otherwise.

The written text of the numbered treaties covering Alberta, including Treaties 6, 7 and 8, repeatedly uses explicit surrender language.

Treaty 6 states that the signatories:

“do hereby cede, release, surrender and yield up…” their rights and title to the lands in question. (Crown-Indigenous Relations Canada)

That's not disputed. It's in the treaty documents themselves.

That's like arguing a contract never mentioned payment terms while the words “payment due” are sitting in paragraph three.

A Vancouver man is facing 227 days in jail after assaulting a teenage girl after smearing fecal matter on her face and mouth.

33-year old Fitsum Wode Zewdu has pleaded guilty to sexual assault, assault, and committing an indecent act. Judge Reginald Harris said he factored in the “love and support of his parents” and a letter from his father during sentencing. However, the judge also said that “the vile nature of the unprovoked assault committed against a young woman who was a stranger to Mr. Zewdu warrants a sentence that strongly denounces and deters.”

Zewdu was sentenced to 695 days, but after time served in pre-trial custody, he will only serve 227 more days.

According to court documents, the incident took place in June of 2025 when a 17-year-old, unknown to Zewdu, was walking near a SkyTrain station. He was out of jail on a conditional sentence order at the time, according to the National Post.

“He then smeared fecal matter over her face and mouth while pushing and jamming feces into her face and mouth,” court records said. “Mr. Zewdu was laughing as he held out his phone causing the victim to believe that Mr. Zewdu was recording the assault. A subsequent search of his phone showed that this was not the case.”

The victim screamed and ran to a nearby residence to contact law enforcement. When the police arrived, they found Zewdu approaching a second woman with a stroller, asking her to smell his hands that were covered in feces.

This is not his only crime. In 2024, Zewdu exited a SkyTrain station and slapped a woman on her buttocks. In July of 2025, Zewdu was asked to leave a strip club. While outside, he threatened to kill and beat a woman, and his penis was exposed the entire time. He was arrested after a brief chase by police.

Zewdu’s criminal record goes back to 2019, accoridng to the judge. He has been convicted of being found naked and masturbating while at a library computer, spitting on a woman’s face, and dropping a cigarette down a woman’s top while he whispered to her about her licking his feet.

“A review of the record discloses two convictions for failing to comply with court orders and a termination of a conditional sentence order,” the judge wrote. “There is one conviction for sexual assault, two convictions for committing an indecent act, and two mischief convictions.”

Zewdu is an immigrant from Ethiopia who moved to Canada when he was three.

Ottawa announces $77.5M gender equality funding package

Gender Equality Minister Rechie Valdez announced Monday that the federal government will provide more than $77.5 million in funding to nearly 400 organizations across Canada focused on gender equality, gender-based violence prevention and support for sexual minority communities.

The funding package, announced in Brampton will support 395 organizations and is being described by the federal government as the largest funding announcement in the history of Women and Gender Equality Canada by number of organizations directly supported.

“Across Canada, community organizations are helping people rebuild after violence, find opportunity, and move forward with dignity and hope,” Valdez said in a statement.

“With this historic investment, our government is giving nearly 400 organizations the support they need to keep changing lives.”

Valdez said the organizations receiving funding are helping women remain in the workforce, supporting survivors of violence and expanding opportunities for leadership and economic participation.

“When women and gender-diverse Canadians are safe, supported, and able to participate fully, Canada is stronger,” she said.

The federal government said $44.4 million will go toward 218 organizations working to advance women’s participation in economic, political and social life, while another $23.2 million will support 112 organizations focused on preventing and addressing gender-based violence.

An additional $9.9 million will be distributed to 65 organizations aimed at strengthening sexual minority communities and supporting initiatives related to safety and inclusion.

The funding announcement builds on top of a recent federal spend of over $167.2 million for other gender equality-related projects.

Officials described the funding package as part of Budget 2025 which includes hundreds of millions in additional spending over the next five years for women’s equality initiatives, gender-based violence prevention and sexual minority programs.

“Women’s organizations, survivors’ advocates, and 2SLGBTQI+ community leaders are doing essential work in communities across the country every day,” Sidhu said.

“This historic investment will help strengthen the organizations people rely on and support safer, more inclusive communities here in Brampton and across Canada.”

Two Charged After Human Remains of Infant Found in Halifax Search

Two people have been changed after Halifax police said a missing newborn had been found dead Sunday.

The search began after a woman who appeared to have recently given birth arrived at a local hospital in life-threatening condition on Saturday.

Police were first alerted at around 9:40 p.m. Saturday when the 23-year-old woman arrived at the hospital. Investigators said she remained in critical condition Sunday and believed she had experienced a medical emergency that was not linked to violence.

The search initially centred on a residence on Willett Street in Halifax’s west end, where officers and volunteer ground search and rescue teams searched through the night and into Sunday morning. As new information emerged, the investigation shifted to the Prospect Road area.

At approximately 3:20 p.m. Sunday, police said human remains of an infant were located in a wooded area off Old Coach Road.

Toronto Police Share Updated Photo, New Website in Search for Missing Teen Girl

Toronto police have released an updated photo and a new website as part of their search efforts for a teen girl who has been missing for eight days.

Police say 14-year-old Esther was last seen in the area of Bathurst Street and Hotspur Road just after midnight on May 16, and they are concerned for her safety.

Police say Esther has been diagnosed as being on the spectrum, and have previously said she was last seen in the Earl Bales Park area on May 15.

Last week, police upgraded their search to a Level 1 operation, which is the highest level, and while they have not provided details on what prompted the upgrade, they say that out of nearly 3,100 missing person reports last year, only five were Level 1 searches.

Toronto police say Esther is described as white, five feet two inches tall with medium build and brown hair, and she was last seen wearing grey sweatpants, a turquoise sweater and no shoes.

Police have released an updated image of Esther from May 15, and investigators have set up a dedicated website to collect information on her case and share their tip line, which can be reached at tps.to/findesther.

The CCP intends to use the UN meeting as a platform to criticize the United States and use the visit to put a wedge in U.S.–Canada relations, analysts said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to New York to chair a high-level meeting of the U.N. Security Council hosted by China on May 26 and then will visit Canada, the Chinese regime’s foreign ministry announced on May 22.

Analysts told The Epoch Times that Wang’s visit to Canada is intended to seek maneuvering space in the backyard of the United States.

As the rotating president of the U.N. Security Council for the month of May, China will convene a high-level meeting on May 26.

Wang will also attend a May 28 meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance, a coalition launched by China at the U.N. headquarters in New York in December 2025, and will have meetings with U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and the foreign ministers from other countries, according to the ministry.

According to China’s foreign ministry, Wang aims to use the meeting to “enhance the authority and efficacy of the U.N. and its Security Council.”

US Man Fined $2.3 Million for Starting Wildfire in BC Loses Appeal

A U.S. boater fined $2.35 million after being accused of sparking a wildfire at a B.C. ecological reserve has lost his appeal of the penalty.

The Forest Appeals Commission found that Duffy Damgaard failed to prove, on a balance of probabilities, that he did not cause the 2018 wildfire on East Redonda Island in B.C.’s Discovery Islands archipelago. The fire burned nearly 660 hectares, including protected ecological reserve land.

The ruling upheld an earlier finding that Damgaard violated provincial wildfire regulations by lighting an open fire to burn garbage during a fire prohibition order on Aug. 24, 2018.

In dismissing the appeal, commission panel chair Daphne Stancil said the panel drew a negative inference from Damgaard’s refusal to testify at the hearing, concluding that any sworn evidence he could have provided would likely have undermined his case.

The commission also rejected Damgaard’s argument that a female passenger aboard his yacht may have started the fire, finding there was insufficient evidence to support the claim. Continue…

Ottawa Braces for 2026 Wildfire Season by Leasing 10 New Firefighting Aircraft

The federal government is leasing 10 new firefighting planes and helicopters to help provinces and territories respond to wildfires this summer.

Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski says provincial and territorial wildfire agencies will be able to request the use of four air tankers, one spotter plane and five heavy lift helicopters to fight wildfires.

In a news release, the government says the new assets will boost national firefighting surge capacity by increasing provincial and territorial access to aircraft during periods of intense wildfire activity.

The release says it is the first time Ottawa will have federal firefighting planes to loan to the provinces, paid for by a new $317-million budget allocation to establish a national aerial firefighting surge capacity.

The government says the assets will be positioned within Canada based on fire activity forecasts and current wildfire activity.

The 2025 wildfire season was Canada’s second-worst on record, with nearly 90,000 square kilometres consumed as of September 2025—an area larger than New Brunswick.
