Fired Ontario teachers return to labour board over union’s refusal to defend religious freedoms

https://www.rebelnews.com/fired_ontario_teachers_return_to_labour_board_over_union_s_refusal_to_defend_religious_freedoms

Two Ontario teachers fired after refusing to “celebrate and affirm” LGBTQ-related school programming are back before the Ontario Labour Relations Board this week, arguing their union failed to defend their constitutional rights.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms says lawyers funded by the organization appeared Thursday on behalf of Matt and Nicole Alexander in their ongoing case against the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario.

According to the Justice Centre, the Alexanders were terminated by the Renfrew County District School Board in October 2023 after declining to participate in school activities they say conflicted with their sincerely held Christian beliefs regarding sexuality and gender identity.

The couple alleges their union failed in its legal “duty of fair representation” by refusing to properly defend their Charter-protected freedoms of religion and expression.

In a statement released ahead of the hearing, the Justice Centre said the case raises broader questions about whether public sector employees can face professional consequences for declining to endorse ideological positions that conflict with their faith.

Lawyers representing the Alexanders argue the issue is not whether schools can support LGBTQ students, but whether teachers can be compelled to actively affirm beliefs that violate their religious convictions.

The hearing before the Ontario Labour Relations Board is expected to focus on whether the teachers’ union adequately represented the couple during the disciplinary and termination process.

The JCCF says the Alexanders are seeking accountability from the union and recognition that religious Canadians do not surrender their Charter rights when working in public education.

B.C. man pleads guilty in Canada’s largest voyeurism case involving 652 victims

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/bc-man-pleads-guilty-in-canadas-largest-voyeurism-case-involving-652-victims/73648

A Vancouver Island man has pleaded guilty in what police believe is the largest voyeurism prosecution in Canadian history after investigators uncovered thousands of secretly recorded images and videos involving 652 women and girls.

Yin Yeung Derek Chan, 39, of Saanich, entered guilty pleas to multiple offences connected to years of covert recordings made without the knowledge or consent of victims across the Greater Victoria area.

The case began in January 2024 after Saanich Police detectives discovered voyeuristic photos and videos being uploaded online through a popular image-sharing social media platform.

The investigation, led by the Saanich Police Special Investigation Section with assistance from the B.C. Integrated Child Exploitation Unit, traced the material back to Chan.

Police noted Chan was already known to authorities following an earlier voyeurism conviction involving secret recordings of a woman inside a shopping mall change room.

Investigators arrested Chan at his Saanich residence on April 11, 2024, where they seized electronic devices containing thousands of images and more than 28 hours of video footage secretly recorded between 2017 and 2023. Continue…

RCMP Arrests Quebec Man for Pro-Islamic State TikTok Posts

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/rcmp-arrests-quebec-man-for-pro-islamic-state-tiktok-posts-6035220?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

The RCMP said they have arrested a man in Quebec who posted TikTok videos in support of the Islamic State, as officers feared he would go on to commit terrorism offences.

The RCMP announced on May 21 that 40-year-old Mohamed Ali Ben Chaoua was arrested in Lévis, Que. The purpose of the police operation was to compel him to “cease his suspicious activities and to lay a terrorism peace bond.”

An investigation began in March 2025 following a report to the RCMP’s National Security Information Network. It came after Ben Chaoua allegedly made several posts on TikTok in support of the Islamic State.

The RCMP said the investigation is ongoing, all evidence will be analyzed, and charges may be laid at a later date. Ben Chaoua is scheduled to appear at the Québec City courthouse on May 22.

Police added that countering “radicalization to violence” is a priority for the Canadian government and the RCMP. “Collaboration and information sharing are key to detection and disruption efforts by law enforcement and their partners,” the RCMP said.

Back in August 2025, a Montreal youth was arrested on terrorism-related charges after he had allegedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and was in the process of planning an attack. Continue…

Flight Bound for the US Forced to Land in Montreal Due to Ebola Travel Restrictions

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/air-france-flight-diverted-to-montreal-amid-us-ebola-travel-restrictions-6033522?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

An Air France flight destined for the United States was redirected to Montreal this week after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) barred it from entering the country due to restrictions associated with the deadly Ebola outbreak in two East Africa countries.

A passenger hailing from the Democratic Republic of Congo disembarked at Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport on May 20, the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a media statement.

The passenger underwent evaluation by a quarantine officer, and was found to be asymptomatic, the agency said. The U.S.-bound flight then continued on to Detroit, its original destination, and the passenger from the Congo was flown back to Paris, the health agency said.

Air France said the passenger was refused entry into the United States because of new regulations stipulating that travellers from specific countries, such as the Congo, may only enter through Washington.

Health authorities are on high alert as a lethal outbreak of a rare strain of Ebola known as Bundibugyo devastates the Congo and its neighbouring country, Uganda.

A U.S. border official said the Congolese passenger should never have boarded the Detroit-bound flight to the United States, given the outbreak. Continue…

Alberta Trades ‘Wild Rose Country’ Slogan for ‘Strong and Free’ on Welcome Signs

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/alberta-trades-wild-rose-country-slogan-for-strong-and-free-on-welcome-signs-6033684?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

Alberta is eliminating its provincial flower from the signs welcoming people into the province in favour of its new official motto: “Strong and Free.”

The province has announced plans to set up new “Welcome to Alberta” highway signs across the province this fall to replace the long-standing “Wild Rose Country” with the province’s well-known slogan.

New signs are needed as the current ones are more than 40 years old and the province’s harsh winters have taken a toll on them, the government said in a May 20 press release.

“After decades of exposure to Alberta’s harsh weather conditions, the existing signs have reached the end of their usable lifespan,” the press release said. “Alberta’s government is now moving forward with a refreshed design that is more durable and built to withstand Alberta’s climate for decades to come.”

The province has issued a request for proposals for a fabricator to build 22 signs to be installed at provincial border crossings and has budgeted $3.5 million for the project, the press release said. The new signs are expected to be installed starting in the fall of this year.

The change to the motto on the signs follows the decision of Premier Danielle Smith’s government last year to place the same slogan on Alberta licence plates. Continue…

Canada Publicly Backs Taiwan’s Participation in WHO Meeting

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/canada-publicly-backs-taiwans-participation-in-who-meeting-6033882?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

Canada has joined eight other countries in reaffirming support for Taiwan’s participation in the work of the World Health Organization and its annual forum, according to a statement by the British Foreign Office.

The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei signed the statement along with the British, Australian, French, German, Japanese, Lithuanian, New Zealand, and Polish offices on May 21. The statement calls Taiwan’s exclusion from the annual meeting “entirely unjustified.”

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) has not yet released its own copy of the joint statement and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has not promoted it. When asked if it will release a statement, GAC referred The Epoch Times to a Facebook post from the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei that contains the statement.

Canada’s backing of Taiwan’s participation in World Health Organization (WHO) activities comes as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government pursues closer ties with Beijing.

China opposes Taiwan’s participation in international fora and seeks to bring the self-ruled island under its control.

The statement said the nine countries support Taiwan’s “meaningful participation” in the work of the WHO and Taiwan’s participation as an observer in the World Health Assembly (WHA), an annual forum of 194 member states that serves as the main decision-making body of WHO.

“Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the fora and technical committees of the World Health Organization would bring benefits not just to people in Taiwan, but also around the world,” the document said. Continue…
