NATO member’s government collapses after Ukrainian drone incident

14 May, 2026 08:29 | Updated 14 May, 2026 09:32

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has announced her resignation amid a government crisis caused by an incident involving Ukrainian kamikaze drones hitting an oil depot near the Russian border.

Silina announced the decision at a press briefing on Thursday. Just hours earlier, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis, a member of Silina’s liberal-conservative Unity party, stated that the prime minister has no intention of leaving office.

Meanwhile, the opposition was planning a procedural maneuver to circumvent the five-day pause required under Latvian law before a request for a no-confidence vote is granted.

The crisis in the Baltic state was triggered by an incident last week in which two Ukrainian long-range kamikaze drones hit an empty oil depot near the town of Rezekne, around 40 km from the Russian border. No casualties were reported on the ground.

Defense Minister Andris Spruds, who has supported Ukraine’s attacks against Russia and called the incident regrettable but understandable, resigned over the weekend.

The Progressives party member said he did not want the military to be dragged into political squabbling.

MP Andris Suvajevs, who leads the Progressives parliamentary faction, stated earlier in the day that the ruling coalition was certain to collapse if a no-confidence motion is put to a vote.

The prime minister was expected to take part in a session of parliament, but instead invited the media to her office to announce her resignation. She blamed “political jealousy and narrow party interests” for the crisis.

Moscow has accused NATO nations of tacitly allowing Ukraine to use their airspace to conduct strikes on targets in northwestern Russia, particularly oil export terminals in Leningrad Region.

Officials in several countries where incidents involving Ukrainian drones were reported since mid-March have expressed concerns with Kiev’s military planning.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said he told Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky that Helsinki regards Ukrainian aircraft entering its airspace as unacceptable.

Estonian Defense Minster Hanno Pevkur said the Ukrainians should “keep their drones away from our territory [and] control their activities better.”

Ukrainian Drone Crew Sets New Record by Destroying 120 Russian Targets Overnight

May 14, 2026 16:07 Updated May 14, 2026 19:01

Ukrainian interceptor drone manufacturer Wild Hornets said its STING drone crews destroyed more than 300 aerial targets during a single day-and-night combat period, including one unit that reportedly achieved 120 interceptions on its own.

The announcement, published by Wild Hornets on May 14, came after one of Russia’s largest drone assaults of the war, during which Moscow launched more than 1,500 strike drones against Ukraine over roughly 36 hours.

According to the company, three STING units accounted for more than 200 confirmed kills, while one crew alone reached 120 interceptions in a single operational cycle.

“If these numbers are confirmed in full, this may become one of the largest single-period interceptor drone successes of the war,” the company suggested, noting that additional reports from crews were still being processed and the final count could rise further.

The STING has emerged as one of Ukraine’s most unusual and increasingly important air defense tools.

Unlike traditional surface-to-air missile systems or electronic warfare platforms, the drone is designed specifically to hunt enemy drones in the air and physically destroy them through direct interception.

Developed by the Wild Hornets volunteer group, the bullet-shaped interceptor was built primarily to counter Iranian-designed Shahed strike drones, which Russia now launches against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure in massive nightly waves.

The NATO-codified STING reportedly exceeds speeds of 340 km/h and can operate at altitudes of up to 3 kilometers. The platform is paired with the Hornet Vision Ctrl system, which provides HD video transmission and low-latency control over long distances, allowing operators to engage targets far from launch sites.

The scale of the reported interceptions reflects the growing intensity of Russia’s drone campaign. During the May 13–14 assault, Ukrainian officials said Russian forces launched 1,567 strike drones in what became the largest drone attack of the full-scale war.

Ukraine’s air defenses reportedly intercepted 1,362 of those drones using a layered mix of interceptor drones, aviation assets, electronic warfare systems, mobile fire groups, and surface-to-air missile units.

Wild Hornets’ state that STING crews alone may have accounted for more than 300 kills suggests interceptor drones are rapidly becoming a major component of Ukraine’s evolving air defense architecture.

The reported figure of 120 interceptions by a single crew is especially notable.

That number roughly matches the size of an entire medium-scale Russian drone wave and highlights both the intensity of the threat environment and the effectiveness of Ukraine’s increasingly specialized drone-on-drone warfare systems.

Earlier, Ukrainian P1-SUN interceptors successfully downed Russian Gerbera drones equipped with FPV drones on board for the first time.

Project ULTRA Aims to Normalize Drone Operations in Shared Airspace

May 14, 2026

FAA, DoD, and industry partners use Grand Forks test environment to develop scalable systems for UAS, logistics, and counter-UAS coordination

At AUVSI XPONENTIAL 2026 in Detroit, officials from the FAA, Department of War (DoW), test sites, and industry described a growing effort to normalize drone operations within the National Airspace System (NAS).

The initiative, known as Project ULTRA, focuses on integrating drones, counter-UAS systems, and traditional aircraft operations into a coordinated operational framework.

The discussion highlighted a shift taking place across the drone industry. Instead of treating uncrewed aircraft as exceptions requiring isolated approvals, agencies are increasingly working toward systems that allow drones to operate as part of everyday air traffic.

“We’re not asking the drones to be different, we’re asking them to be treated as aircraft,” said Christopher Hewlett of Grand Sky UAS Ecosystem.

Project ULTRA operates at Grand Forks, North Dakota, through cooperation between the FAA, the Department of War, Grand Sky, the Northern Plains UAS Test Site, and Air Force partners.

The project builds on earlier Department of War UTM efforts and focuses on operational testing in complex airspace environments.

Moving Beyond Demonstrations

Speakers emphasized that the goal is no longer simply proving that drones can fly safely. The focus now is on scaling coordinated operations in shared airspace.

Ryan Simms of Patriot Strategies, who moderated the panel, described the effort as part of a broader push toward “normalizing UAV traffic so that standards can be established and interoperability can be achieved.”

That includes coordinating:

manned aircraft

BVLOS drone operations

airport drone activities

counter-UAS systems

logistics flights

military operations

John Sawyer of Modern Technology Solutions, representing the Department of War, explained the challenge from the DoW perspective.

One essential problem is developing the operating procedures, technologies, and systems to allow airspace integration anywhere – not just on one Air Force base in the US.

“We fight wars. We defend the nation. We have to have the capability to fly a manned or unmanned aircraft… not only in our national airspace system, but overseas,” Sawyer said.

That means developing a system that merges defense requirements with civil airspace integration efforts.

Counter-UAS Becomes a Traffic Management Issue

One of the clearest themes from the session was that counter-UAS operations are increasingly connected to broader airspace management.

“You’ve got manned air traffic, helicopter operations, counter UAS detection systems, you have your on airport UAS operations, and outside of the boundary you have BVLOS UAS operations,” Sawyer said.

“How do we detect? How do we coordinate that detection to be sure that all of the stakeholders are seeing what they need to see?”

Speakers repeatedly described the challenge as a “system of systems” problem. Different detection platforms, security technologies, and traffic management systems must work together without overwhelming operators with data.

Trevor Woods of the Northern Plains UAS Test Site noted that the industry still faces technical gaps around detection and identification. Too narrow, and you might miss small drones – too broad and you pick up irrelevant objects.

“You have to start figuring out, am I picking up geese? It’s a known gap,” Woods said.

Another major issue is identifying legitimate aircraft activity vs. drone flights that might pose a threat.

“There is a gap in knowing who’s friendly and who isn’t friendly,” Woods said, pointing to the need for operational intent sharing and broader visibility into authorized flights.

Building a Scalable Playbook

FAA officials said the agency is using Project ULTRA to learn how existing rules and approval pathways can adapt to increasingly complex drone operations.

“Everything Project ULTRA is doing is new and different,” said FAA representative Jim Reynolds. “Any one of them might be novel, but combining them all together requires… thinking about new pathways to get those approvals.”

Participants also stressed that the work underway at Grand Forks is intended to scale beyond a single location.

“When this was graduating from DoD UTM to Project ULTRA, the measuring stick was: what can we build up in a year that will continue to provide value 10 years from now?” Woods said.

That long-term view may be the most important takeaway from the session. Project ULTRA is not just testing drones.

It is testing how the FAA, Department of War, airports, operators, and security systems may eventually function together in an airspace environment where drone traffic becomes routine.

Burchett tells ‘Ruthless’ more UFO videos to come

May 14, 2026 6:00am EDT

In an exclusive interview with the Ruthless Podcast, Representative Tim Burchett says that more Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO) videos will be released.

"There are 30 or 40 videos that we need to see that we know that they have that we have not seen that are much clearer," Burchett said in the interview released Thursday morning.

"And we don’t know what we don’t know. I've been told by some pretty high-ranking people that there are some."

The East Tennessee congressman joined Ruthless days after the Department of War began releasing files on UFOs. In February, President Trump committed to releasing information on alien, extraterrestrial life, and UFOs.

Burchett noted that many of his colleagues in Congress and across the government are scared to discuss the matter publicly.

"I’ve talked to Members of Congress [who said], ‘hey, man, I don’t want to come forward and talk about this,’" Burchett said.

"I was in this branch of the service or whatever, I was on night watch and this thing, and he said it was just unbelievable, and I hear that over and over and again," he continued.

Podcast co-host Josh Holmes appreciated Burchett’s honesty and approach to politics, even if he was skeptical.

"We enjoy your sense of humor and your interest in just the idea of exploring things, regardless of where the politics lead," Holmes told Burchett.

Burchett appeared on Ruthless as a part of the Ruthless Midterm Interview Series, an ongoing initiative to interview major candidates across the country.

The hosts have already interviewed candidates in 15 states, with more scheduled ahead of the November midterms.

Burchett, who told Fox News last summer that he would be interested in filling Senator Marsha Blackburn’s Senate seat should she win the gubernatorial race.

When asked by co-host John Ashbrook if that was still the case and if he was looking to give East Tennessee more of a voice in Washington, Burchett replied that he would be interested in serving in the Senate.

"I will not be the guy that says, well, I’m going to form a study committee, and we’re going to talk about it down to Chamber of Commerce, and I’m going to have a round table: heck, no," Burchett responded.

"I would love to fight it out in the United States Senate. I would do that. Yeah. And I would relish that fight."

Voters in Tennessee will head to the polls for the congressional primary election on August 6th.

Following a recent Supreme Court decision, Governor Bill Lee and Republicans in the state legislature have successfully passed a new congressional map, likely flipping Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen’s Memphis-area seat to the GOP.

Should that seat change party control, Tennessee’s delegation would consist of nine Republicans and zero Democrats.

The general election will take place on November 3rd.
