ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Residents near Queeny Park may have noticed a heavy emergency response presence Thursday as local agencies conducted a large-scale disaster readiness training exercise with the goal of testing emergency response during a mass fatality incident.
The training was organized by the St. Louis Area Regional Response System (STARRS) and took place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Queeny Park.
Officials have stressed that the exercise was just a drill and that there is no danger to the public.
The training is intended to test and strengthen St. Louis area departments’ ability to coordinate during a large-scale emergency involving multiple agencies and manage operations during an event with numerous deaths.
The exercise gave emergency crews the chance to practice handling a disaster scene, from recovering victims, to setting up a temporary morgue, identifying those who died, and helping their families, all in a realistic, “no fault” training environment. Responders worked through simulated logistical challenges, media requests, and family assistance operations during the intense exercise.
Groups participating in the exercise were made up of individuals from coroner and medical examiner officers, emergency management agencies, law enforcement, public health departments, healthcare organizations, non-government organizations, and incident support teams from across the St. Louis area.
