Ukrainian drones struck Russia’s Syzran oil refinery on May 21, causing a major fire at a Rosneft facility and reported casualties.
The attack is part of Kyiv’s ongoing campaign against Russian energy infrastructure, which has disrupted multiple refineries and significantly reduced parts of Russia’s fuel refining capacity in recent weeks.
Ukrainian drones struck Russia’s Syzran oil refinery early morning on Thursday, May 21, sparking a massive fire at one of Rosneft’s major fuel-processing facilities as Kyiv’s long-range campaign against Moscow’s energy infrastructure intensifies.
Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev confirmed the strike on the city of Syzran in Russia’s Samara region, claiming two people were killed and several others injured.
Russian officials blamed “enemy” drone attacks, while local footage shared online showed towering flames and thick black smoke engulfing the refinery complex.
According to Russian independent outlet Astra and Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+, the target was the Syzran refinery, which processes up to 8.5 million tons of oil annually.
The latest strike marks the second attack on the facility in just over a month.
On April 18, Ukrainian drones reportedly damaged critical technological equipment at the plant, forcing the shutdown of the AVT-6 primary refining unit that was responsible for more than 70% of the refinery’s processing capacity.
The attack is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to degrade Russia’s military logistics and fuel supplies by targeting the country’s sprawling oil infrastructure deep behind the front lines.
Over recent weeks, Ukrainian drone strikes have disrupted operations at major refineries across central Russia, including facilities in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Ryazan, and Yaroslavl, according to Reuters.
The combined capacity of refineries either fully or partially knocked offline now exceeds 83 million tons annually – roughly a quarter of Russia’s total refining output.
Reuters estimates the affected plants previously accounted for more than 30% of Russia’s gasoline production and around 25% of its diesel fuel output.
Several other facilities that could potentially offset the losses are themselves either damaged or operating below capacity.
Among them are the Permnefteorgsintez refinery and the Astrakhan gas processing plant, both reportedly offline, while the Novokuibyshevsk refinery is functioning at only around 25% capacity.
Ukraine said on Wednesday that it has struck 10 Russian refineries in May alone, shutting down operations at six of them.

Navy SEALs In Mini-Submarines Teamed With Underwater Drones In The Works

he U.S. Navy sees a future in which uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUV) work together with submersibles loaded with SEALs.
The service has already been conducting tests to explore how crewed-uncrewed teaming under the waves might work.
UUVs could help extend the operational reach of operators riding in SDVs, as well as help reduce their vulnerability, but there are communications and other challenges still to overcome.
Navy Capt. Mike Linn shared details about the Navy’s plans for teaming UUVs and various types of swimmer delivery vehicles (SDV) with our Howard Altman on the sidelines of the annual SOF Week conference yesterday.
Linn currently works within the Naval Special Warfare program office (PMS 340), a division of the Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) Program Executive Office for Unmanned and Small Combatants (PEO USC).
“That is the goal,” Linn said when asked about the Navy’s view of teaming UUVs with SDVs, the latter of which the service also refers to as SEAL Delivery Vehicles.
As it stands now, the main workhorse of the Navy’s SDV force is the Mk 11, which is just under 22 and a half feet long. It is operated by a crew of two and can carry six passengers.
Also referred to as the Shallow Water Combat Submersible (SWCS), the Mk 11 is what is known as a “wet” submersible design, where the occupants are exposed to water the entire time during their voyage.
The Mk 11, like its predecessors, can be launched and recovered from submerged submarines with specialized Dry Deck Shelters (DDS) attached to their hulls.
The Navy has also acquired several new Dry Combat Submersibles (DCS) in recent years, which feature a pressurized cabin with space for a crew of two and eight passengers.
This means the larger DCSs can operate at greater depths than the SWCSs. They also deliver their occupants to the destination dry and relatively warm, helping to reduce operator fatigue and certain potential health risks.
The DCS does have the limitation of being too big to fit inside existing DDSs. At least publicly, this is understood to translate to the need for support from a mothership on the surface.
There are multiple UUV designs in the Navy’s inventory today, as well. These are largely torpedo-shaped designs intended to be deployed from and retrieved by vessels riding on the surface or submarines.
In recent years, the service has been working to expand its ability to launch and recover UUVs from submerged submarines without the need to send out divers to help.
Historically, underwater retrieval of UUVs, in particular, has been a largely manual affair, often conducted via DDS.
In terms of the potential benefits of UUV-SDV teams, “underwater systems like the SDV and UUVs afford reach underwater,” Capt. Linn explained.
“So, if you can get somewhere in an SDV and then launch a UUV to go do something, then that would make you more capable.”
“You could extrapolate, just as you would have an unmanned wingman in an aircraft, or a maritime surface co-pilot, the same can be said for underseas,” he continued.
“So, if you have an unmanned system with you underwater, then I suppose you can use your imagination.”

“A good example might be a harbor,” he added. “Technology is in a state where passing through the mouth of a harbor, a choke point, is maybe much more well defended.
Or it is a choke point, and they don’t want to pass there with a big manned platform. So if you send a smaller unmanned platform through, then that’s pretty logical.”
“It can be an overall risk-reducer,” he further noted. A key mission set for Navy UUVs is scouting ahead for mines and other potential hazards, and otherwise helping commanders establish a better ‘view’ of the battlespace above and below the waves.
This could all be especially valuable for SEALs during high-risk missions, including ones being conducted covertly or clandestinely.
Capt. Linn was also candid about the challenges the Navy still has to overcome to make this underwater teaming ability a reality.
He described both crewed SDVs and UUVs as being “deaf, dumb, and blind” in terms of their current ability to communicate and coordinate with each other to ensure they are both in the right place at the right time.
“Through-water data transfer is difficult, and so the modality that you choose while remaining survivable is kind of difficult.
And, also, in order to do that, you have to have pretty well synchronized systems,” he said. “We’re looking at all ways of transferring data through water. It can be acoustic, [and] there’s light-based transfers.”
There are other questions still be answered around how UUVs teamed with the SDVs would operate, including where the uncrewed companions would be launched from.
If the SDVs have to carry them to the launch point themselves, this could present additional challenges.
“You’ve got to consider your volume in the SDV, which is not great,” Capt. Linn noted. “Are you going to strap it to the outside?”
He did confirm that testing is already being conducted to delve deeper into this potential pairing.
He said that the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD), headquartered in Panama City, Florida, has been leading the charge.
“I think we’re still years away from having something at the reliability level that they want,” Capt. Linn added.
“Again, back to the actual ones and zeros, and the modality of data transmission, [being at the] right time, right place,” and doing all of this “where you have to be survivable, that’s difficult.”
As Capt. Linn has made clear, significant hurdles will need to be cleared before UUV-SDV taming can become a reality. However, there are also real operational benefits that would come from pushing toward this goal.

Mysterious circular structure spotted near Area 51 sparks theories of UFO landing site

A strange circular formation just miles from the highly classified Area 51 base has fueled speculations that it could be a secret UFO landing site.
Spotted on Google Earth, the structure sits just four miles northeast of the base, lying in the desert landscape of Nevada.
It appears as a large, nearly perfect circle carved into the barren Nevada desert, with pale dirt sharply contrasting against the darker surrounding terrain.
At the center sits a smaller raised structure or mound, casting a shadow that makes the site resemble a giant target or landing marker when viewed from above.
A narrow dirt road leads directly to the circular clearing before abruptly ending at the structure, adding to the site’s isolated and mysterious appearance.
An image of the formation, found at its coordinates 37°16'34.5"N 115°45'18.6"W, has flooded social media, where users suggested it looks like an 'alien crash site.'
While the discovery has sparked wild theories, other social media users have shared a more realistic take, saying that the structure appears to be a bomb target located on the Weapons Test Range east of Groom Lake.
These kinds of targets were commonly used during Cold War-era weapons testing and pilot training exercises across the Nevada desert.
The giant circular clearing would have been easily visible from the air, allowing fighter pilots to practice bombing runs or military crews to test targeting systems, radar equipment and aerial sensors.
At the center of the formation sits a smaller raised object or mound that may have served as the primary aiming point for aircraft during training missions.
The remote location and unusual symmetrical design have fueled online conspiracy theories suggesting the structure could be tied to UFO activity or classified government experiments.
However, the site closely resembles other known bombing circles and aerial target ranges scattered throughout military training grounds in Nevada and the American Southwest.
Area 51 has long been the stuff of alien lore, with whispers of crashed UFOs and extraterrestrial autopsies behind its barbed-wire-laced fence.
The base, established in 1955, remained largely unknown until 1989 when Robert Lazar claimed on TV that he worked at a secret site near Groom Lake, 'S-4,' studying alien technology and spacecraft.
While the remote US Air Force base in Nevada has kept a tight lid on its activities, the CIA finally lifted the lid in 2013, officially admitting Area 51's existence.
The agency declassified a more than 400-page report that detailed how testing its secret spy planes 'accounted for more than one-half of all UFO reports during the late 1950s and most of the 1960s.'
The U-2 spy and A-12 reconnaissance planes were being flown in the shadows of the desert amid the Cold War, but the extreme altitudes sparked fears of an alien invasion.
'High-altitude testing of the U-2 soon led to an unexpected side effect, a tremendous increase in reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs),' the report states.
'Once U-2s started flying at altitudes above 60,000 feet, air-traffic controllers began receiving increasing numbers of UFO reports.'
However, the CIA report does not mention Area 51's purpose after 1974. In July 2019, nearly 500,000 people committed to storming Area 51 that September.
The 'Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us' event was created on Facebook, garnering more than 460,000 'going' RSVPs while another 460K said that they were 'interested' in infiltrating the Nevada compound.
'We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and coordinate our entry,' the event description says.
'If we Naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Let's [sic] see them [sic] aliens.'
The phrase 'Naruto run' refers to anime character Naruto Uzumaki, who is known for a running style that has his body tilted forward and low to the ground while his arms are stretched out behind his back.
A few days after the Facebook event was created by Matty Roberts, he revealed it was all a 'joke.'
Roberts told Nevada's KLAS-TV via video call on Wednesday that he was amazed at how his hoax took off. 'I posted it on like June 27th and it was kind of a joke,' Roberts said.
Roberts said he had decided to come forward out of fear the FBI would come to question him over the joke after millions of UFO conspiracy theory fans signed up to invade the top-secret US Air Force base.

Fresh debate erupted this week after former investigator and author David Paulides appeared on a podcast discussing mysterious disappearances in wilderness areas, reviving chilling claims that aliens, unexplained forces and secretive government investigations could be linked to people vanishing without a trace in parks like Yosemite.
The Yosemite Case
One of the most disturbing stories raised during the discussion involved 14 year old Stacy Aris, who vanished during a horseback trip in Yosemite National Park nearly five decades ago.
According to Paulides, the teenager walked away briefly to take photographs near a lake surrounded by trees before disappearing entirely. Massive search operations reportedly found only her camera lens cap near the tree line. Her body was never recovered.
What turned the case into a magnet for conspiracy theorists was not just the disappearance itself, but the alleged refusal by authorities to release investigation files years later.
Paulides claimed he repeatedly filed Freedom of Information requests for access to the case documents but was denied.
He said one official allegedly told him the investigation was still considered 'ongoing' decades later, a claim that fuelled suspicions online that something unusual may have happened in the park.
Why They Believe Something Strange Is Happening
The conversation soon moved beyond a single missing person case and into territory that has made the 'Missing 411' phenomenon famous across conspiracy circles.
Paulides claimed there are recurring patterns in wilderness disappearances that he believes cannot easily be explained by accidents or animal attacks. One major detail involves search dogs.
According to him, trained canines in hundreds of missing person cases allegedly failed to track scents properly, sometimes refusing to continue searching at all. He argued that experienced tracking dogs do not normally behave this way.

He also pointed to cases where hikers disappeared moments after separating from friends or relatives. In several stories, people reportedly vanished within seconds despite being only a short distance away.
These incidents have helped create theories that national parks may contain unexplained phenomena ranging from portals and interdimensional activity to extraterrestrial abductions.

Another bizarre account centred on a hunter named Carl, who allegedly encountered two alien beings while hunting alone in Wyoming's Medicine Bow National Forest.
According to the story, Carl claimed his bullet dropped from the air mid shot before he was taken aboard a mysterious craft alongside an elk. He later said he awoke injured on a hillside while search teams were already looking for him.
The tale became even more unbelievable when Paulides claimed the hunter's old tuberculosis scars had mysteriously vanished after the alleged encounter.
No verified evidence has ever proven these stories involved extraterrestrials, but they continue to spread widely across UFO forums, podcasts and documentaries.

The renewed fascination surrounding national park disappearances highlights how deeply the 'Missing 411' phenomenon has embedded itself into internet culture.
