Alleged ‘Trump House" attempted murder suspect was Navy veteran with "severe PTSD," per family friend
"The alleged assailant, 32-year-old Escondido resident Thomas Caleb Butler, was arrested on attempted murder charges and faces life in prison if convicted. The victim's said he is not expected to make it. If he dies, the charge will be murder.
"Butler’s friend … said he “liked” the house, which Butler lived mere blocks away from, and supported President Donald Trump as a registered Republican." [Unclear whether friend is speaking of his own opinions or those of Butler.]
"The attack stunned the Butler family friend, whodoesn’t know why he would have allegedly assaulted Sheron.
“This is the guy that plays with Legos and Star Wars stuff,”the friend said.
"Police said they responded to a violent attack on East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street in Escondido at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, where they found Sheron lying with severe injuries anda utility worker restraining the alleged attacker.
"Butler’s family friend says whilehe was MEDICATED, his mental illness was [still] debilitating.
"After servingseveral years in the Navy,Butler wasunemployed and dealing with demons, the friend said.
He “sits in his room and thinks everyone is coming to get him,” the friend said, suggesting Butlersuffers from intense paranoia.
"Police believe the attack had nothing to do with politics and are in the process of speaking to witnesses.
"They told The Post they’re still actively working the case.
"Butler is currently booked in Vista Detention Facility on a charge of first-degree attempted murder. He’s currently not eligible for bail and will be arraigned on Friday.
"If convicted of the charge, he could spend life in prison.
"Sheron, [the elderly victim]who describes himself as a Army veteran, is known for adorning his Buchanan Street home with Trump flags and other pro-American regalia."
