Jacob Günther and his co-pilot—members of the "Steeler Spatzen" Gliding Club from Essen—had originally intended to fly all the way to Einbeck on Friday (May 22).
The duo had taken off from Dorsten. However, they suddenly lost their thermals—the warm air currents that gliders require to fly. Consequently, their only option in Oer-Erkenschwick was to execute an emergency landing in a field.
"We don't have an engine, so we just land in a field—much like a balloon," the 26-year-old remarked after the landing.
