American Cemetery Margraten
Commemoration
Royal Navy, Royal Netherlands Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Netherlands Marechaussee
On Sunday, May 24, Dutch Defense personnel commemorated the American soldiers who died during World War II. The military is buried in the American Cemetery Margraten (Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial).
Missing-man formation
Traditionally, warplanes of the Royal Netherlands Air Force bring a greeting. 4 aircraft fly a so-called missing-man formation above the cemetery. In addition, 1 of them leaves the group as a symbol for the fallen.
Margraten is the only American cemetery in the Netherlands. The majority of U.S. military personnel were killed during the liberation of the southeast of the Netherlands and the advance through Germany. Margraten is the resting place of nearly 8,300 U.S. military personnel. 1,722 people are on the Walls of the Missing; some of them were found later.
