DOJ’s Criminal Case Against Kilmar Abrego Garcia Dismissed for 'Vindictive Prosecution'

U.S. District Court Judge Waverly Crenshaw dismissed the Department of Justice’s charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran national who was deported to his home country’s CECOT prison last year, on Friday afternoon.

“The Court does not reach its conclusion lightly. The objective evidence here shows that, absent Abrego’s successful lawsuit challenging his removal to El Salvador, the Government would not have brought this prosecution. The Executive Branch closed its investigation on the November 2022 traffic stop,” wrote Crenshaw, who granted Garcia’s motion for dismissal based on vindictive prosecution.

“Only after Abrego succeeded in vindicating his rights did the Executive Branch reopen that investigation. What the Government labels as ‘new evidence’ was not new as a matter of law. The prosecutor’s subjective good faith does not cure the retaliatory taint. Absent Blanche’s tainted investigation, Agent Saoud would not have called McGuire, Singh would not have brought him into the fold, and McGuire would not have sought an indictment against Abrego. The indictment then provided the Executive Branch cover to comply with Judge Xinis’ order to facilitate Abrego’s return to the United States as soon as possible,” continued Crenshaw. “Abrego’s motion to dismiss the indictment must be granted.”

Abrego Garcia was brought back to the United States last summer after the Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to do so.

The Department of Justice subsequently indicted him on “unlawful transportation of illegal aliens for financial gain” and conspiracy charges.

Abrego Garcia’s deportation last year ignited a political firestorm as the administration argued that he is a member of MS-13, and critics arguing that the government had not allowed him due process.

Egypt announces biggest Western Desert energy discovery in 15 years

Total reserves of latest find estimated at 70 million barrels of oil equivalent as Iran war drives global energy prices higher.

Egypt has announced a major oil and gas discovery in its Western Desert.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources described it as Agiba Petroleum Company’s largest find in 15 years and a positive signal to investors in a turbulent global energy market.

Preliminary estimates indicate it holds about 330 billion cubic feet of natural gas and 10 million barrels of condensate and crude oil, with total reserves of about 70 million barrels of oil equivalent.

The ministry said Agiba, a joint venture between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Italy’s Eni, made the discovery through the exploratory well Bustan South‑1X using the Egyptian Drilling Company’s EDC 9 rig.

Eni was at the centre of another major Egyptian discovery this year, after the company announced in April it had found an estimated two trillion cubic feet of gas and 130 million barrels of associated condensates, about 70 kilometres off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast.

The ministry said the new discovery was made about 10km from existing production facilities and pipelines. It said this would allow for a rapid development plan and early connection to the network without major spending.

The ministry presented the find as evidence that recent incentives to international partners are paying off. The incentives are encouraging companies to step up exploration in areas adjacent to existing fields to cut costs and shorten the time from discovery to production.

Agiba has drilled a series of new wells and made several discoveries in the Western Desert in the past two years, helping lift its crude output to around 32,000 barrels per day by late last year, the company’s highest level in three years.

The latest announcement comes as global oil and gas markets are disrupted by the Iran war, which has raised fears over a lack of efficient supply routes and pushed up benchmark prices sharply.

Brent crude has climbed by more than 50 per cent since the start of this year, briefly nearing $120 a barrel in late March, while the World Bank now expects global energy prices to be about 24 per cent higher than in 2025, the steepest rise in four years.

Natural gas prices have also surged, particularly in Europe, amid concerns about potential disruption in the Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean, adding urgency to efforts by producers, such as Egypt, to sustain and expand upstream output.

Israeli man arrested for smuggling human embryos in Northern Cyprus

Northern Cyprus authorities have arrested an Israeli man attempting to smuggle four human embryos out of the country.

The Israeli man was arrested at Gate 8 security checkpoint of the Ercan International Airport last Tuesday after he was found carrying the four human embryos sealed in test tubes inside a specialized transport container labelled “Life Parcel.”

He was arrested just moments before boarding a flight bound for Mexico via Istanbul.

Prosecutors, who are investigating the matter, are treating the attempt as a case of international embryo trafficking.

Northern Cyprus authorities also raided a local medical clinic and arrested two local residents at the center, the manager and a physician.

Investigators say the embryos were taken from a fertility center in Lefkoşa.

The three suspects are accused of attempting to smuggle human embryos out of Northern Cyprus, violating laws governing the transplantation of human cells, tissues and organs.

Investigators are also focusing on the suspected smuggling route, most flights from Ercan Airport in Northern Cyprus travel to Turkey, mainly Istanbul.
