Anon has been around the block quite a few times, even in major corporation for a long long time.
There are several "handles" or "levers" that can be used against people to cause people to act against their own self-interest. It is in anons' interest to introspect a bit, reflect about motivators in our own lives, and understand what personal characteristics that might be used against us.
Some people quickly fall for monetary inducements, or sex enticements, or something that propels us to the "top" of society with the nicest physical surroundings and possessions.
Other people can be leveraged by the "fame" handle. They crave recognition. If given the opportunity to move into the limelight and make a name for themselves, they will do it. This motivator can be subtle and once people move into these kinds of roles, sometimes they regret it but cannot back down because of ego and stubbornness. It's hard to say "I was wrong", "I was tricked", "I didn't know the path I started down would take me to where I am now and I wish I hadn't done it."
The troll was looking for people who might fall for the "fame" lever.
