Floods, Landslides, Mudslides Hit China, Many Villages Gone, Millions Homeless
Recently, Shimen County in Changde, Hunan, faced an extremely rare, record-breaking downpour. The heaviest rainfall in a single day reached 492.5 millimeters—almost the total annual rainfall of some northern provinces. It far exceeded the standard for extreme heavy rain, pouring down like someone had overturned a giant bucket. In a short time, flash floods and mudslides swept through the area. Rivers like Xieshui surged overnight by nine meters, leaving much of the county suddenly submerged and in chaos.
