NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day

May 26, 2026

NGC 3660 and Burçin's Galaxy

The upper galaxy might be more photogenic, but the lower galaxy is more unusual. The galaxy up top is NGC 3660, a spiral galaxy similar to our own Milky Way galaxy in that it has several bright blue spiral arms and a central bar of stars, dust, and gas. Captured by chance in the featured deep and colorful image, surprisingly, is SN 2026cff, a supernova found just to the right of the central bar. Farther in the distance is the bottom galaxy, known informally as Burçin’s galaxy, but formally cataloged as LEDA 1000714. The center of this galaxy appears to be an old elliptical galaxy, but it is strangely surrounded by not one but two rings of stars. What created Burçin's galaxy is a mystery and remains a continuing topic of research, but it likely involves the accretion of one or more smaller galaxies.

Proof of Alien Life? NASA Transcripts Reveal Bright Drifting Particles

26 May 2026, 1:05 PM BST

Newly declassified NASA transcripts describing 'bright particles or fragments' drifting past an Apollo spacecraft have resurfaced in the United States this month as part of a fresh Pentagon release on unidentified anomalous phenomena, reigniting speculation over whether the files amount to proof of alien life.

The latest material is the second batch published under a transparency drive ordered by the US Congress in 2022.

The programme requires the Pentagon to organise and declassify decades of reports on unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAP, ranging from Cold War radar blips to modern cockpit footage and astronaut logs.

Since early May, officials say the online archive has drawn more than a billion visits, even as they stress that none of the files confirms an extraterrestrial origin.

Proof Of Alien Life Or Just 'Bright Drifting Particles'?

The latest package, compiled by the Pentagon and its All domain Anomaly Resolution Office, contains about 50 additional items, including infrared videos, technical summaries and written testimony from military personnel and civilians.

One of the most striking entries dates to 2019 in the Middle East, where infrared footage shows a cluster of unidentified objects manoeuvring in ways investigators could not easily match to known aircraft or drones.

Other records describe objects that appeared suddenly and vanished within seconds, leaving behind only fragmentary sensor traces that resisted quick explanation.

The NASA material is drawing particular attention. In transcripts and photographs from the Apollo era, now included in the broader UAP archive, astronauts on Apollo 17 can be heard and seen referring to 'bright particles or fragments' drifting near their spacecraft.

The images show tiny specks and shards hanging against the blackness of space, occasionally catching the light.

For enthusiasts, the fact that such language appears in official NASA mission logs decades before the modern UFO boom is enough to fuel speculation.

To them, the mix of unexplained infrared footage, pilot reports and Apollo transcripts suggests, at the very least, a long running pattern of something strange in the skies and near Earth space.

But the agencies behind the release are taking a far more cautious line. AARO has repeatedly said the majority of cases remain unresolved not because they point to impossible physics, but because the available data is too limited to support a firm conclusion.

>>24646888

Why Officials Stay Cautious

Officials say many of the videos and sensor logs were collected by equipment never designed to study unknown objects in detail. Infrared cameras can saturate, radar returns can drop out, and narrow fields of view mean that by the time an operator looks back, the object may already have gone.

That leads to what AARO calls 'insufficient data quality.' Without continuous tracking, analysts cannot calculate basic details such as speed, altitude or shape, let alone identify any exotic propulsion system.

Fragmented recordings also make reconstruction difficult, since a sudden zigzag could simply reflect a moving aircraft and an unstable sensor.

Another issue is corroboration. UAP cases backed by multiple independent sources, such as radar, infrared, optical footage and eyewitness accounts, are rare.

Most entries in the archive rely on only one or two partial records, making mundane explanations harder to exclude and extraordinary ones harder to prove.

For that reason, the Pentagon's position has remained consistent. It says there is 'no confirmed indication' in the declassified material of advanced non human technology or alien activity.

The Apollo 17 references, while intriguing, sit alongside decades of ordinary reports of ice crystals, insulation flakes and other debris that can behave similarly in microgravity.

That has not stopped the phrase 'proof of alien life' spreading online as amateur researchers dissect the release.

It does, however, underline the gap between what the documents actually say and the meaning some readers want to attach to them.

Disclosure And Debate

The declassification effort is unfolding in phases. Each tranche of UAP files is reviewed, redacted where necessary and uploaded for public scrutiny, with the Pentagon signalling that further batches will follow as AARO works through historical holdings.

Supporters argue that the process gives scientists, journalists and the public access to raw material that was previously locked away, rather than forcing them to rely on leaks or second hand briefings.

Critics say the releases remain heavily curated and that the most explosive material, if it exists, is likely still classified.

What is beyond dispute is the level of public interest. The huge traffic to the official UAP site shows how strongly the subject resonates, particularly when NASA astronauts themselves appear to be describing something unusual out the window.

Whether those bright fragments were mission debris or something more unusual is exactly the kind of question the archive invites people to ask. For now, though, the official line remains unchanged: interesting, yes; conclusive, no.

Nothing in the released files has been independently verified as proof of alien life, so any definitive claim of extraterrestrial visitors should be treated with caution.

Trump Just DEMANDED the Entire Muslim World Recognize Israel

May 25, 2026

President Donald Trump may have just revealed the most controversial Middle East peace proposal in modern history — and almost nobody realizes how massive this is.

In a stunning Truth Social post, Trump publicly demanded that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, the UAE — and even Iran itself — join the Abraham Accords as part of any future Iran peace agreement with the United States.

This is not just diplomacy. This is an attempt to completely rewrite the geopolitical order of the Middle East.

For decades, many of these countries refused to recognize Israel, funded anti-Israel movements, or built their entire foreign policy around opposition to normalization.

Now Trump is openly pressuring them to sign simultaneously or risk the entire deal collapsing.

What does this mean for Iran?

Why is Pakistan on the list?

Why is Türkiye included despite Erdoğan’s anti-Israel rhetoric?

Why is Qatar — home of Hamas leadership and US CENTCOM — suddenly central to this strategy?

And most importantly:

Could this isolate the Islamic Regime in Iran so completely that it accelerates the collapse of the regime itself?

As a former politician and geopolitical analyst, I break down the real strategy behind Trump’s announcement, the history of anti-Israel policy in each country involved, the economic and military implications of a unified Middle East coalition, and why this could become the biggest geopolitical shift in the region since 1979.

This changes everything.

NASA is testing a cancer drug in space right now

May 26, 2026

NASA is taking cancer research beyond Earth — and into orbit.

Right now, aboard the International Space Station (ISS), scientists are studying how cancer medicine behaves in zero gravity to see if space can reveal clues that are impossible to observe on the ground.

It might sound unusual, but researchers believe the weightless environment of space could reveal hidden vulnerabilities in cancer cells that are impossible to detect on the ground, potentially changing how we treat the disease forever.

New cancer study begins aboard the International Space Station

Floating high above our planet, the Expedition 74 crew is currently searching for new ways to defeat one of Earth’s deadliest diseases.

On May 19, NASA flight engineer Chris Williams set up a brand-new experiment called Space Cancer Therapeutics inside the station’s Kibo laboratory module.

Just recently delivered by a SpaceX Dragon cargo ship, this groundbreaking study uses the weightless environment of space to look at an anti-cancer drug in a whole new light.

Without the pulling force of gravity, scientists can see exactly how the drug attacks cancer cells at a microscopic level.

Working right alongside Williams, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot added a vital piece of equipment, a specialized humidifier, to the station’s biology research facility.

This upgrade keeps the environment perfectly stable for the living cells and cancer samples being used in the study, ensuring the delicate experiment runs smoothly.

The hope is that this orbital research will unlock secrets to creating much more powerful treatments for pancreatic cancer, benefiting patients back home on Earth.

Other health research happening in orbit

Alongside the cancer study, the crew aboard the ISS is also carrying out several other health research.

NASA flight engineer Jessica Meir is working on growing cartilage tissue in space using specialized equipment designed to help the cells form more natural structures.

She carefully processed and preserved cartilage samples that were grown on Earth and delivered to the station aboard SpaceX Dragon, using the Kibo laboratory module’s Life Science Glovebox.

These samples will then be incubated in the Space Automated Bioproduct Laboratory, where researchers hope to better understand how weightlessness can improve cartilage tissue engineering.

The results could one day help develop improved ways to protect astronauts’ physical health and even lead to better implants for patients on Earth with joint injuries.

Meanwhile, NASA flight engineer Jack Hathaway spent his May 19 shift supporting a range of biotechnology and life science studies.

He began by swapping hardware inside the Advanced Space Experiment Processor-2, helping enable research into the production of pharmaceutical compounds.

He then serviced a centrifuge in the Columbus laboratory module’s Human Research Facility, ensuring ongoing experiments continue to run smoothly.

Preparing for a spacewalk outside the ISS

The Expedition 74 crew is also preparing for an upcoming spacewalk scheduled for later this month outside the International Space Station.

Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikaev began by carefully inspecting a pair of Orlan spacesuits to make sure all life support and communication systems were properly installed and working as expected.

They then reviewed the detailed procedures for the planned spacewalk, which will take place at a date and time still to be confirmed by NASA.

Later on, they were joined by fellow Roscosmos flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev to go over the full set of spacewalking tasks planned for the excursion.

The preparation work is part of the crew’s ongoing efforts to ensure every step is carefully rehearsed before venturing outside the orbiting laboratory.

Space Force leaders connect with public, present 'Always Above' at Western Kentucky University

May 26, 2026

Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AFNS) – Top Space Force leadership engaged with the local community at Western Kentucky University May 22, fielding questions and presenting the service’s immersive planetarium documentary, “Always Above.”

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman, Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna, and Brig. Gen. Nick Hague, Assistant Deputy Chief of Space Operations for Operations and former NASA astronaut, participated in a panel discussion to shed light on the service’s mission, current-day capabilities, and future vision.

The visit served as a unique opportunity to connect with a community not regularly exposed to Guardians and their daily operations.

During the panel, the leaders answered questions from the audience, demystifying the 6 1/2-year-old service and emphasizing the critical role the space domain plays in everyday American life.

“When you think about the agricultural industry, the financial industry, the transportation industry … all really rely on space capabilities,” Bentivegna said.

“If you went and got gas today, used an ATM, paid with a credit card or used GPS to get to where you’re going, all that comes from space.”

In conjunction with the panel, Western Kentucky University hosted various screenings of the Space Force’s planetarium documentary, “Always Above.” The 12-minute, visually stunning full-dome planetarium film explores the unseen forces that connect Earth and space.

It takes audiences on a journey to highlight how much modern life depends on orbiting satellites for communication, navigation, weather forecasting, and national security.

The film also offers audiences a look into the daily mission of Space Force Guardians.

“The Space Force is all about protecting our [nation's space] capabilities,” Saltzman said. “We also have to recognize that other countries are building satellites that are designed to target our forces.”

The Space Force first debuted the planetarium documentary one year ago in May 2025. Since then, it has helped the service reach tens of thousands of viewers around the country and online.

“The problem with space is it’s a little bit out of sight, out of mind, quite frankly,” Saltzman said. “I wanted to come up with some kind of experience that people could understand that the Space Force is out there, it’s important.”

By bringing top leadership and “Always Above” to Bowling Green, the Space Force aims to inspire the next generation, bridging the gap between local communities and the vital work being done to secure the ultimate high ground.

Click here to find a local screening, view the documentary on a personal virtual reality device, or watch the “flat” version on any device.

European Space Agency Shares Details Of "Most Perfect Geometrical" Forms Created In Space

May 25, 2026 14:03 pm IST

Astronomers have captured an image of one of the most geometrically perfect structures ever

Space has a way of making geometry look effortless. While humans spend hours with rulers and compasses, the universe routinely reveals near-flawless shapes.

The European Space Agency (ESA) shared an image of one of the most "perfect geometrical" forms created in space. The image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, captures the formation of an unusual pre-planetary nebula, known as IRAS 23166+1655, around the star LL Pegasi in the constellation of Pegasus.

"The striking picture shows what appears to be a thin spiral pattern of astonishingly regularity winding around the star, which is itself hidden behind thick dust," the ESA wrote.

"The spiral pattern suggests a regular periodic origin for the nebula's shape."

According to the space agency, the material forming the spiral is moving outwards at a speed of about 50 000 km/hour.

ESA noted that by combining this speed with the distance between layers, astronomers calculate that the shells are each separated by about 800 years.

"The spiral is thought to arise because LL Pegasi is a binary system, with the star that is losing material and a companion star orbiting each other.

The spacing between layers in the spiral is expected to directly reflect the orbital period of the binary, which is indeed estimated to be also about 800 years," said ESA.

The image of IRAS 23166+1655 offers a rare, front-row seat to the early stages of stellar death. Stars ranging from half to eight times the mass of our Sun do not exit the universe in a violent supernova explosion.

Instead, they experience a far more regal finale. As they die, they gently shed their outer layers of gas into the void. These expanding shells often drift into the glowing structures that resemble dramatic watercolour paintings to observers on Earth.

"IRAS 23166+1655 is just at the dawn of this transformation," ESA noted. "The central star has yet to fully emerge from its dusty cocoon, but it is already leaving behind an unprecedented architectural masterpiece."
