The newly electedScottish Parliament has supported a formal requestto London for permission tohold a new referendum on independence.

Scottish voters rejected the previous attempt to leave the United Kingdom during a 2014 referendum, which unionist politicians described as a “once in a generation” opportunity.

The latest push has beenstrengthened by recent elections in Scotland and elsewherein the Uk boosting regionalpro-independence movementsand delivering amajor setback to the Labour Party.

How strong is Scotland’s push to quit the UK?

Theindependence movement was only modestly weakenedby the result of the 2014 vote and gained renewed energy after Brexit, which most Scottish voters opposed in 2016.

In the parliamentary election held earlierthis month, the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) and Scottish Greens won a combined 73 seats in the 129-member chamber, creating thelargest-ever blocat Holyrood in favor of breaking up Britain.

MSPs voted on Monday to back First Minister JohnSwinney’s demand that Downing Street “make a Section 30 order under the Scotland Act 1998,” allowing anew independence referendum– commonly referred to as “indyref2.”

What is a Section 30 order?

Although theScottish Parliamentwasgranted lawmaking powers in 2016, those powers remain restricted.Section 30 allows the Britishparliament to temporarily orpermanently transfer additional authority to Holyrood, including overconstitutionalmatters.

Themechanism has been used more than a dozen timessince the Scottishparliament was established in 1999. In 2015, for instance, it was used to give 16- and 17-year-olds the right to vote in local and Scottish elections.

The 2014 independence referendum was authorized in 2012 through the same procedure. TheEdinburgh Agreement also allowed younger Scotsto take part in that vote.

Will London approve Scotland’s request?

Not if the Labour government’s public statements are any indication.

Last year, after Swinney declined to explain how he would pursue another independence referendum following the election, Prime Minister KeirStarmer accused himof “insulting the intelligence of the Scottish people” with a ‘secret’ plan.

After this week’s vote, Downing Streeturged the Scottish government to focus “on the issues that really matter– economic growth, the cost of living, and public services.It arguedthat, unlike before the 2014 referendum,there is currently no public consensusin favor of indyref2.

Liberal Democrat Alex Cole-Hamiltondismissed the vote as “performative,” and Reform UK’s Malcolm Offord sought to distance his party from the issue, describing the Holyrood debate as “groundhog day.”

Could Starmer be pressured to change course?

Swinney has challenged Westminster to show that “this is a voluntary Union” by allowing Scots to decide once morewhether they want to remain in the post-Brexit UK.

TheLabour Party suffered a damaging defeat in local electionsheld onthe same day that Scottish voters chose their lawmakers. ThePro-independence parties also performed stronglyin parliamentaryelections in Wales this month, leaving Scotland, Wales, and Northern Irelandall governed by first ministers who support the breakup of the UK.

There has been speculation that Starmer could step downas Labour leader, but his political vulnerability does not necessarily advance Scotland’s independence ambitions, judging by the conduct of previous prime ministers. (Starmer would have been out a month or two ago, if the City of London hadn’t demanded and forced other politicians to make sure stay he stays)

Conservative leaderBoris Johnson rejected then-Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s request for a Section 30 order in 2022, even as his own cabinet was nearing collapse. His predecessor, Theresa May, also refused to authorize indyref2 in 2017.

Trump to place weapons-grade plutonium in private hands

Five nuclear firms, including one tied to the US energy secretary, have been chosen for a possible fuel production scheme

The US Department of Energy has selected a number of private companies as potential recipients of weapons-grade plutonium, including one where Energy Secretary Chris Wright served on the board before joining the admimistration of President Donald Trump.

The US government holds roughly 50 metric tons of fissile material recovered from dismantled nuclear weapons at highly secure sites. The Trump administration said last year that it intended to expand the Surplus Plutonium Utilization Program by allowing private companies to manufacture energy-dense fuel for advanced small reactors, with 20 tons of plutonium earmarked for transfer.

On Tuesday, the Department of Energy named five firms chosen for “advanced negotiations” under the plan, among them Oklo Inc., a California-based small-reactor developer that Wright helped run before his confirmation as energy secretary in February 2025.

Oklo said it would use US plutonium in partnership with the European company newcleo. CEO Jacob DeWitte said the initiative “creates a pathway to use existing surplus material as bridge fuel for advanced reactors to bring more reactors online sooner.”

The other companies named by the government are Exodys Energy, SHINE Technologies, Standard Nuclear, and Flibe Energy. The Department of Energy said access to plutonium supplies would help private partners attract investment.

Plutonium transfers will make Trump’s ‘rich buddies happy’

The plan to place weapons-grade plutonium – a dangerous material requiring strict handling and security controls – in private hands has drawn opposition from some US lawmakers, who have warned of safety and proliferation risks.

“Trump wants to take enough plutonium for 2,000 atomic bombs and hand it over to private industry just to make his rich buddies happy,” Senator Edward Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, said. “He might as well sell nuclear weapons at Costco. If this material shows up in Iran, we know who’s to blame.”

Critics also argue that the program encourages other countries to view plutonium in spent nuclear fuel as a valuable resource rather than hazardous waste, creating incentives to extract and stockpile it.

Since 2025, the US has attacked Iran twice over the claim that Tehran cannot be trusted to run a civilian nuclear industry and not try to weaponize it. The crisis remains unresolved, while the global economic fallout from disrupted maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf continues to mount.

US hooked on foreign nuclear fuel

The peaceful reuse of Cold War-era fissile material was once a central element of US-Russian cooperation. Under the HEU-LEU program, Russian weapons-grade uranium sufficient for around 20,000 warheads was converted into reactor fuel before the agreement expired in 2013.

A similar plutonium arrangement was signed in 2000, but was suspended in 2016 after being roughly 70% completed, as bilateral ties deteriorated following the US-backed armed coup in Ukraine.

In 2024, the US banned imports of Russian low-enriched uranium, presenting the move as part of its sanctions policy and an effort to revive America’s domestic enrichment sector, which had weakened during decades of abundant imported fuel, including under the HEU-LEU program. However, waivers are available until 2028.

In January, the Department of Energy announced plans to invest $2.7 billion over ten years in enrichment services.

Dead men and prisoners ‘drafted’ in Ukrainian mobilization fraud

Three officers have been arrested for faking recruitment data, Kiev’s prosecutor general has said

Ukrainiandraft officers have been caught adding dead people and convicts to the mobilization database amid military manpower shortages and growing public anger over forced conscription, Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko has said.

According to theRussian Defense Ministry, Kiev lost around 500,000 troops in 2025 alone. Ukrainian Defense Minister MikhailFedorov previously acknowledged that around 200,000 troops had deserted•=, while also saying that at least 2 million men had been placed on a wanted list== for avoiding mobilization.

Three high-ranking officers at recruitment centers have been detained after engaging in “paper mobilization,” Kravchenko said in a statement on Tuesday.

They entered false information into the official database in order to report the successful implementation of enlistment targets, he explained.

“To improve statistics, the list of those ‘mobilized’ included deceased and convicted persons, those with deferral…citizens who are already serving or studying at military universities, as well as those who are no longer subject to mobilization due to age,” the statement read.

In the town of Mukachevo in Transcarpathia Region, the head of the local recruitment center and his deputy used the scheme to fictitiously mobilize 270 people between January and March, Kravchenko said.

A similar episode occurred in the town of Zolochev in Lviv Region last year, with the interim head of the local enlistment office adding six people who were already serving in the military to the database, he added.

According to the prosecutor general, recruitment centers in other parts of the country are currently being checked for similar schemes.

The police said in a separate statement that those detained are suspected of forgery and making unauthorized changes to an official registry.

“As a result of their actions, the high military command could have received inaccurate information on the actual state of manning of military units,” it stressed.

Earlier this month, an officer in charge of recruitment in Zhitomir Region was arrested for demanding a bribe from a local businessman in exchange for exempting his employees from mobilization.

There have also been reports of draft officers accepting payments for smuggling military-aged men across the border.

At the same time, the mobilization drive in Ukraine has become increasingly violent, with hundreds of videos surfacing on social media of men being snatched off the streets by press gangs.

Staff at drone-hit Russian college added to Ukrainian ‘kill list’

The state-linked Mirotvorets database has targeted staff from the Starobelsk educational facility just days after a UAV strike on a dorm left 21 students dead

Ten employees from the Starobelsk Professional College in Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic have been added to the ‘kill list’ run by Ukraine’s state-linked Mirotvorets website,just days after a dormitory at the facility was targeted by Kiev in a drone strike that killed 21 students.

According to data from the website,the recent entries include seven women and three men, among them deputy directors and teachers at the college. The database accuses them of publicly supporting Russia, attempting to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and spreading propaganda among minors.

The Mirotvorets database, which has been linked to the Ukrainian security services, is notorious for publishing the addresses and personal details of anyone critical of the Kiev regime, including journalists, athletes, artists, and politicians, some of whom have subsequently been assassinated.

The inclusion comes after the Starobelsk college was hit on Friday by several waves of Ukrainian drones. According to the Russian authorities, UAVs struck the college’s academic building and dormitory while 86 children, aged 14 to 18, were inside. The attack killed 21 students, mostly teenage girls, and 60 more sustained injuries.

Moscow has described the strike as a “monstrous crime” and accused Kiev of deliberately targeting children at an educational facility.

The Russian military responded to the attack on Sunday by conducting a “massive strike” against military targets in Ukraine, including in Kiev, which featured the intermediate-range hypersonic Oreshnik system, Iskander ballistic missiles, and Kinzhal and Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles.

Western officials have since condemned Russia’s retaliatory strikes while failing to address Ukraine’s initial attack on the Starobelsk dormitory. Western media outlets such as the BBC and CNN have also refused invitations to send journalists to the scene of the attack.

Moscow has called out Kiev’s backers for remaining “brutally silent” on Ukraine’s war crimes.Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, accused the West of once again “turning a blind eye” to the crimes of the “neo-Nazi Kiev regime”and engaging in “blatant mockery of child victims.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the destruction of Gaza,warning that Muslims may soon teach him a “lesson.”

Erdogan made the remarks during Eid al-Adha celebrations in his hometown of Rize,where he called for Muslim unity and putting pressure on Israel.

“What is happening in Palestine, in Gaza, gives us a special stance, a special vigil this Eid. God willing, this tyrant Netanyahu will soon learn the lesson he deserves from the Muslims of the world,” he said, according to Anadolu news agency.

The comments came days after Israel detained hundreds of activists from a Gaza-bound flotilla, which had departed from Türkiye carrying humanitarian aid and pro-Palestinian campaigners seeking to challenge Israel’s blockade of the enclave.

Erdogan branded the interception “piracy and banditry.”

Ankara has sought to support Palestinians with humanitarian aid, diplomatic lobbying, ceasefire initiatives, and legal efforts related to Gaza.

Erdogan has been among the most vocal critics of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza since it began in 2023, accusing Israel of “genocide” and “state terrorism” against Palestinians, while comparing the Israeli government to Nazis at times.

Social media firms would be forced to boost “reliable” news outlets and punish “disinformation”

=+German regulators plan to force social media platforms such as X to boost government-approved “reliable” media outlets in their algorithms, according to leaked documents. The US government has vowed to respond over what it sees as pressure on American tech firms.==

In adraft ‘Digital Media State Treaty’ seen by Apollo News, the heads of Germany’s 14 state media regulators have outlined plans to boost the visibility of “public value media”on social media platforms such as X and TikTok.

In order to combat “disinformative, polarizing, or merely attention-grabbing content,”the regulation would force platforms to alter their algorithms to prioritize content from mainstream news sources, such as Germany’s ARD and ZDF broadcasters. Content will be ranked by its “timeliness, relevance to the public’s interest in information, and journalistic context,” and will appear accordingly in users’ feeds, the draft states.

The concepts of “disinformation” and “public value” will be decided by media regulators appointed by the parliaments of their respective states. As such, the enforcement of the treaty will be inherently politicized.

If adopted, the regulation will likely apply to all major social media platforms. However, Elon Musk’s X has been singled out by Thorsten Schmiege, who chairs the Conference of Directors of the State Media Authorities. Speaking to the Frankfurter Rundschau earlier this month, Schmiege criticized Musk for stripping away much of the X’s speech restrictions when he purchased the platform in 2022.

“Content moderation was very responsible back then,” he said, adding that he aims to make it “economically necessary” for X to reintroduce its prior censorship policies.

X is an American platform, and any algorithmic changes would influence what kind of content Americans are exposed to. “A key force at play here is foreign governments’ desire to control who commands credibility, even on American platforms,” US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers wrote on X on Wednesday. Asked whether the State Department would push back against the draft treaty, Rogers responded “stay tuned.”

The EU fined X €120 million ($139 million) in December for violating its Digital Services Act (DSA), a sweeping censorship bill adopted in 2024. Brussels argues that X’s blue checkmark system for paid subscribers constitutes “deceptive” advertising, claiming that accounts with the checkmarks have not been “meaningfully verified.”

Musk and some senior members of President Donald Trump’s administration have accused the EU of unfairly singling out X for punishment over its refusal to censor political speech.

“The European Commission’s $140 million fine isn’t just an attack on X, it’s an attack on all American tech platforms and the American people by foreign governments,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at the time. Iran lawmaker says possible US deal does not match Tehran’s claimed victory(it never will either)

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for Iran’s parliament National Security Committee, criticized reports of a possible agreement between Tehran and Washington,saying the draft did not match what he called the Iranian people’s “great victory” in the 40-day war.

President Trump Praises DNI Tulsi Gabbard for Her Incredible Work at Reforming the Intelligence Community

During acabinet meeting today at the White House, President Trump took the opportunity to thank Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, for her exceptional work and focus withinthe intelligence system to organize strong reforms that will be around for a long time.

DNI Tulsi Gabbard has indeed been a transformative member of the cabinet,working through her office and agency while partnered with CIA Director John Ratcliffe and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio. Mrs. Gabbard is leaving on June 30 to stand beside her husband Abraham as he battles a bone cancer diagnosis. WATCH:

It is expected that DNI Gabbard will deliver more information to the American public through a series of declassifications prior to the end of her tenure. There isno immediate discussion of her replacementand Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, Aaron Lukas, will serve as Acting Director of National Intelligence following her departure.

REMINDER: There will likely be a great deal of rumor and speculation about a different permanent replacement. One name sure to surface within the discussion is Devin Nunes, but I strongly doubt the former Chairman of the HPSCI would desire or accept the position.

If, and that is a very big ‘if’, Devin Nunes was to accept the role, that would indicate a remarkable change in his opinion about the overall intelligence apparatus. Therefore, I doubt this is an option. Devin Nunes believes in the historic fidelity of the intelligence institutions. As a result, the DNI position has seemed smaller and less significant.

The only way Nunes would take the job is if two things changed. First, he now believed the construct of the United States intelligence apparatus is teetering on the edge of irreversible corruption (he did not previously hold this position); and second, if he sees that Tulsi has now proven the power of the DNI in the intelligence apparatus. As readers here will fully understand, until DNI Gabbard that power was never fully extended.

Former House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) member Elise Stefanik will likely be another name. She would have the full support of the Susie Wiles grouping. The same network who advocated for Mike Waltz to be National Security Advisor. However, Stefanik would greatly please Laura Loomer, Mark Levin and Ben Shapiro; while conversely providing fuel for Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly antagonisms. (None of them)

Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn would likely be another name. Unfortunately, Flynn’s judgement is not stellar, and while he has been supportive of Mrs. Gabbard it’s not likely President Trump wants that kind of Flynn drama or the issues he brings with him for a nomination. That said, if the political calculation is to fuel the core base, Flynn might stand a chance at nomination. But don’t overthink it, Flynn would be of no value in the DNI position for anything of substance. Again, weak judgement (led to his former demise) and grifting tendencies. (Not him ever)

Two other names of note: Scott Perry from Pennsylvania who was a target of the FBI/IC for his support of President Trump, and Rick Crawford the current Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, a gang of eight member. The IC has nothing to fear from either of these names.They are essentially Mike Waltz clones, though to be fair I might be a little harsh on Perry.

Rick Crawford, as HPSCI Chairman, allowed Tulsi Gabbard to review the Atkinson transcript.Still, he didn’t act until Gabbard asked to see it and later pushed to declassify it.While he had the authority to handle it himself, like many congressional IC members in both the House and Senate, he seemed wary of challenging the very system they’re tasked with overseeing. [TIP: If whoever’s name it is currently falls under the IC oversight mechanism, they probably fear the “seven ways from Sunday” group, unlike Tulsi Gabbard. Accept this reality and adjust your perspective accordingly.]

GOPe types and “CONservative” influencers might also bring up Trey Gowdy or former HPSCI Chairman Mike Rogers. If either of these names show up, there’s a problem. And anyone advancing these names…. well, they’re the problem.

One name that would seem to fit the role and responsibilities would be former Congressman Dan Bishop, currently serving as a U.S. Attorney in North Carolina. Bishop was a member of the House Subcommittee on Govt Weaponization that frustratingly went nowhere as it was designed to fail by House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan. Bishop himself was frustrated by the lack of assertiveness within the sub-committee structure.

There’s no immediate need for any speculative guesswork. ADNI Aaron Lukas will likely do a solid job.
