The problem is strict literalism instead of understanding the concept. The extremist always weaponize to control. Examples are Sharia Law from Islam etc.

Enforcement of Religious Law is unnecessary as God gave man free will (Jesus knocks at the door of your heart, asking to come in) It's mans choice.
