Kenya court blocks US Ebola facility plan

A judge has paused the planned quarantine site for Americans after a petition filed by Kenya’s Katiba Institute

Kenya’s High Court halted a US-backed plan to build an Ebola quarantine facility at the country’s Laikipia Air Base intended for Americans potentially exposed to the virus.

The court order on Thursday came shortly after Washington announced a new initiative, as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) continues to spread. According to the US Department of State, Washington plans to commit $13.5 million to support Kenya’s Ebola preparedness.

The petition filed by Kenya’s Katiba Institute argues that the project could create a public health risk in a country that has not reported any Ebola cases. The court certified the application as urgent after the petitioner alleged an “imminent threat to life” if interim orders were not granted, according to the court decision.

The ruling restrains Kenyan authorities from “establishing, operationalising, facilitating, approving or permitting … any Ebola exposure, quarantine, isolation or treatment facility” in the country, under an arrangement with the US or any other foreign government.

The US has taken other measures to limit the risk of Ebola spread. Washington recently imposed emergency entry restrictions on foreign nationals who had visited DR Congo, Uganda or South Sudan, while US citizens returning from those countries could only enter through Washington Dulles International Airport.

The legal dispute comes as health authorities respond to a growing Ebola outbreak in DR Congo. On Thursday, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Director General Jean Kaseya said that a total of 1,077 suspected cases and 246 probable deaths have been recorded since May 15, when the country declared its 17th Ebola outbreak.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the virus and has raised concerns across the region because there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted treatments available.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday reported the first confirmed recovery of the outbreak. The agency’s technical officer Anais Legand said that a patient who tested positive for Ebola recovered and was discharged from hospital on May 27 after receiving two negative test results.

Netanyahu orders expansion of Gaza occupation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to occupy 70% of Gaza, in violation of the US-brokered ceasefire deal between West Jerusalem and Hamas, which allows Israel to control no more than 53% of the enclave.

The 2025 agreement, backed by a UN Security Council resolution, envisioned a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in exchange for Hamas disarming and relinquishing control of the territory. Instead, sporadic fighting has continued, with Israeli forces steadily pushing deeper into the enclave.

”We now control 60% of the territory in the Strip. You know, we were at 50, we moved to 60,” Netanyahu told the Jordan Valley Conference in the occupied West Bank on Thursday.

“My directive is to move to… first of all 70%. Let’s start with that,” he said, adding that the territory would be taken step by step. He did not say whether Israel ultimately intends to occupy all of Gaza.

Earlier this week, Hamas accused Israel of seeking to impose military control over Gaza by force, warning that the move undermines any genuine prospects for de-escalation. The group has refused to disarm or surrender its weapons, according to Bulgarian diplomat Nikolay Mladenov, who is overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

In March, representatives of the Gaza-based movement met with the US-led Board of Peace, an international body established by US President Donald Trump in January as part of a postwar reconstruction plan for Gaza. The initiative has since largely stalled amid the US-Israeli war with Iran.

The war in Gaza erupted after Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. Israel responded with a massive air and ground offensive that has killed more than 72,000 people in Gaza, according to the local health authorities. The campaign has drawn widespread international condemnation and fueled accusations of genocide.

As America’s war with Iran lurches from escalation to ceasefire to renewed threats of military force, Americans are being asked to trust that someone, somewhere, knows what they are doing.

But who?

The president who boasts one moment of imminent peace and threatens the next to “finish the job”? The Pentagon officials who insist the war is going according to plan? The vice president who has reportedly questioned whether the Defense Department is giving the president the full picture? The intelligence agencies, defense contractors, war planners, foreign allies, billionaire donors, political handlers and unelected power brokers who operate behind the curtain?

This is the constitutional crisis hiding in plain sight.

The question is not merely whether Donald Trump is fit to lead. The question is whether any president still leads in any meaningful constitutional sense once the permanent war government gets moving.

That war government—the military industrial complex, the intelligence apparatus, the surveillance state, the federal police bureaucracy, the defense contractors, the private-sector profiteers and the unelected functionaries who keep the machinery running—does not need tanks in the streets to take over.

It already has the budgets, the weapons, the secrecy, the technology, the classified briefings, the emergency powers, the corporate partners and the political class in its pocket.

All it needs is for the American people to keep believing the fiction that elections alone are enough to keep tyranny in check.

They are not.

The Constitution was supposed to keep power on a short leash. Congress was supposed to declare war, control the purse strings, restrain the executive and answer to the people. The president was supposed to execute the laws, not rule by decree, wage undeclared wars, or serve as front man for an empire. The courts were supposed to serve as a check against government abuse, not rubber-stamp the national security state’s worst excesses.

Instead, we have inherited a government of permanent war, permanent surveillance, permanent emergency, permanent secrecy and permanent power.

Call it the Deep State.

Call it the Police State.

Call it the Military Industrial Complex.

Call it the Techno-Corporate State.

Call it the Surveillance State.

Whatever name you give it, the result is the same: a government that keeps expanding no matter who occupies the White House, no matter which party controls Congress, and no matter what the people actually want.

This is bigger than Trump.

Trump may be reckless, transactional, vindictive, distracted, authoritarian in impulse and dangerously unfit for the powers he wields. But the machinery now surrounding him did not begin with him and will not end with him.

Every modern president has inherited the same war powers, the same secret agencies, the same emergency apparatus, the same surveillance systems, the same defense contractors, the same militarized police forces, and the same bipartisan addiction to power without accountability.

Trump didn’t create the permanent war government.

He inherited it, fed it, enlarged it, weaponized it and, like every president before him, became its salesman.

The Iran war is merely the latest test case.

Israeli Military Attempts To Halt Catholic Marian Festival In West Bank, Until Cardinal Intervenes

Israeli military officials allegedly attempted to halt a Catholic Marian festival in honor of the Virgin Mary in a Christian village located in the West Bank on Friday, sources say.

Jason Jones, founder and president of the Vulnerable People Project (VPP), told the Daily Caller that VPP had witnessed an Israeli military vehicle enter the village of Taybeh in the early morning and order organizers preparing for the festival to leave the area.

“A permitted Catholic festival honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary was nearly shut down by armed military intervention before it even began,” Jones said.

VPP told the Caller that it had been stationed in Taybeh to document the festival as part of its Save West Bank Christians Campaign, following concerns that the annual celebration may have been the target of Israeli settlers encroaching on the Christian village.

Approximately 30 minutes later, another military vehicle appeared and delivered the same orders, VPP told the Caller.

The parish priest overseeing the festival, Fr. F, contacted church authorities immediately, until the matter reached Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

According to VPP, Cardinal Pizzaballa was able to speak with Israeli authorities, eventually securing permission for the festival to proceed.

“Our fear this morning was that radical settlers would disrupt preparations for the Marian Festival. Instead, it was far more disturbing to watch the Israeli military intervene,” Lex Pouliot, manager of Middle East projects for the Vulnerable People Project and a witness to the military incursion, told the Caller through a VPP statement. “Hearing a stun grenade explode as Christians prepared for a permitted religious celebration brought into sharp focus the countless stories I have heard throughout my time in the West Bank. What I witnessed today should concern Christians around the world.”

Jones said the incident should alarm Christians around the world, adding that “the Christian community of Taybeh has endured escalating pressure for months, and today’s events demonstrate how fragile religious freedom has become in the very land where Christianity was born.”

County Housing Official Sentenced for His Role in Multimillion-Dollar Scheme to Receive Bribes From Hawaii Businessman and Attorneys

A former Hawaii County official, Alan Scott Rudo, 59, now of Cathedral City, California, was sentenced yesterday to 46 months in prison for his role in a conspiracy to receive bribes in exchange for his official actions as a Housing Specialist at the Hawaii County Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD). The scheme involved affordable housing development agreements worth more than $11 million.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Paul Joseph Sulla, 79, of Hilo, Hawaii, and Gary Charles Zamber, 56, of Keaau, Hawaii, both attorneys living on the Big Island, and Rajesh Pankaj Budhabhatti, 65, now of Morro Bay, California, a private businessman on the Big Island, conspired to pay bribes and kickbacks to Rudo in exchange for Rudo’s agreement to use his official position to ensure the County approved three affordable housing agreements (AHAs) benefitting the defendants’ development companies, Luna Loa Developments LLC, West View Developments LLC and Plumeria at Waikoloa LLC. Although Rudo’s co-conspirators promised in the AHAs to build affordable housing for the citizens of Hawaii County, their development companies never built a single unit. Through the AHAs, the defendants fraudulently obtained more than $11 million worth of land and excess affordable housing credits (AHCs). From that amount, Sulla, Zamber, and Budhabhatti paid or attempted to pay Rudo approximately $1,931,778 in bribes and kickbacks.

Zamber, Budhabhatti, and Sulla were charged with conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud and nine counts of honest services wire fraud. Sulla was also charged with money laundering. Rudo, who was charged separately with one count of conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud, pleaded guilty and testified at the trial of his co-conspirators. On June 4, 2025, a federal jury in the District of Hawaii convicted Sulla, Zamber, and Budhabhatti on all counts in a superseding indictment.

Earlier this year, the court sentenced Rudo’s co-conspirators in the bribery scheme. Zamber was sentenced on Jan. 30 to 70 months in prison; Budhabhatti was sentenced on Feb. 6 to 90 months in prison; and Sulla was sentenced on April 23 to 60 months in prison. Zamber’s and Sulla’s law licenses are currently suspended, prohibiting them from practicing law in Hawaii.

Former DuBois City Employee Pleads Guilty to Helping to Embezzle and Launder $1.5 Million from City Funds

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - A former employee of the City of DuBois, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of federal program theft and money laundering, United States Attorney Troy Rivetti announced today.

Roberta Shaffer, 61, of DuBois pleaded guilty to two counts before United States District Judge Stephanie L. Haines on May 27, 2026.

In connection with the guilty plea, the Court was advised that, from 2010 until 2022, Shaffer was employed as assistant to the City Manager of DuBois, which received federal assistance through grants, subsidies, loans, guarantees, insurance, and other forms in excess of $10,000 in each of the calendar years from 2008 to 2022. In her role as assistant, Shaffer and then-City Manager John Suplizio opened four secret bank accounts that were neither approved nor signed for by the appropriate City officials as required under Pennsylvania law, with Shaffer instead signing the account opening documents at Suplizio’s direction.

Suplizio then diverted approximately $1.5 million that should have been deposited into accounts controlled by the City into the secret accounts, from which Suplizio used the stolen money to make payments on his personal credit card and to pay for various personal expenses, as well as for substantial cash withdrawals made for Suplizio’s benefit. Shaffer wrote and signed many of the checks that paid for the credit card bills and resulted in the cash withdrawals. The secret accounts were also used to pay for donations to local politicians, a fundraiser dinner for a local judge, and a City employee’s wedding reception. In addition, several cashier’s checks purchased through withdrawals from the secret accounts, as well as numerous large cash deposits, were later deposited into Suplizio’s personal banking accounts.

Judge Haines scheduled Shaffer’s sentencing for September 22, 2026. The law provides for a maximum total sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $500,000, or both. Under the federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Suplizio’s trial is scheduled to begin October 5, 2026.

Assistant United States Attorney Brendan T. Conway and Special Assistant United States Attorney Summer Carroll (Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General) are prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
