the list is below. The 2026 Makerfield by-election, scheduled for 18 June 2026, features 14 candidates from 11 parties and three independents. The race is widely considered competitive, with the first major polling showing a tight contest between the Labour and Reform UK contenders.
The confirmed candidates are:
Andy Burnham (Labour and Co-operative Party): The Mayor of Greater Manchester, selected to contest the seat after outgoing MP Josh Simons resigned to facilitate his return to Parliament.
Robert Kenyon (Reform UK): A self-employed plumber and local councillor who finished second in the 2024 general election.
Rebecca Shepherd (Restore Britain): A local businesswoman, marking the party's first parliamentary candidate.
Michael Winstanley (Conservative Party): A former Mayor of Wigan and long-serving local councillor.
Jake Austin (Liberal Democrats): A Stockport councillor who previously stood in the Greater Manchester mayoral election.
Sarah Wakefield (Green Party): A Manchester City Council councillor, selected after the initial candidate withdrew.
Peter Ward (Rejoin EU): Standing on a platform focused on rejoining the EU and introducing proportional representation.
Howling Laud Hope (Official Monster Raving Loony Party): The party's leader and co-founder, known for satirical political campaigning.
Count Binface (Count Binface Party): A novelty candidate known for appearing in the 2019 general election.
Dan Clarke (Libertarian Party): The party's North-West coordinator.
Ed Gemmell (Climate Party): An independent candidate focused on climate action.
John Alfred Dyer (Independent)
Paul Richard Gould (Independent)
Robert Neil Pownall (Independent)
Polling conducted in late May 2026 suggests a close race, with Burnham at 43% and Kenyon at 40%, while Rebecca Shepherd polls at 7%. The seat was held by Labour in 2024 with a majority of 5,399 votes, but recent shifts in national sentiment have tightened the margin.
