Two people who are reportedly in the running to manage Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign repeatedly referred to themselves as member of a “mafia” in emails to a private discussion group that were published Thursday by ABC News.

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) said the “sadistic policies and practices” of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have “got to go.”

Patrick said, “We clearly need some alternative to the policies in ICE whether you call it ICE or call it something else. The sadistic policies and practices of ICE today have got to go. You know separating families, the walking away from DACA, the deportation of spouses of immigrants who serve in the military today, Really?”

He continued, “We are better than that and you know, the opportunity to have comprehensive immigration reform has been on the table before there is bipartisan support for it. It needs to come back. We need to be serious about it. And the only reason that it doesn’t happen today is because I believe our president wants to keep it as an open wound so he can rally his base or the extreme of his base around it for political reasons.”

He added, “We need somebody to do the job of ICE whether we keep it as in the name of ICE or give that assignment to some other agency with a different name is not as important to me. We need better policies. I think the name of the agency is less important than getting the policies right and what we have today are the wrong policies and wrong practices.”

Facebook on Tuesday announced its banning of eight pages, 17 profiles, and seven Instagram accounts that engaged in what it described as online political activity that was both “inauthentic” and ultimately an “abuse” of its platform. While the activity was not attributed to anybody specific, the implication was clear, and at several points, the company made comparisons to a Russian organization U.S. authorities accused of trying to influence U.S. voters during the 2016 election.

But at least one of the pages deleted this week was run by a group of real Americans who say they’ve been unfairly targeted by Facebook and falsely accused of being “unwittingly” duped into helping plan a protest scheduled to take place in Washington, DC, less than two weeks from today.

Facebook, for its part, says the page advertising the event was founded by a group whose administrators include some who have been flagged as a potential threats—entities, it says, who are likely trying to influence domestic politics from abroad, as Russian trolls had done two years ago. The real activists, however, say that Facebook, in this case, overshot its mark, overzealous perhaps in its attempt to placate a hostile Congress, while holding fast amid a week of ugly financial misfortune.

Six People Detained Following Maduro Drone Assassination Attempt - Minister

CARACAS (Sputnik) - On Saturday, a blast occurred during Maduro’s address at a military parade in Caracas. Venezuela’s Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez said after the incident that Maduro had survived an assassination attempt with the use of explosive drones.

Six people have been detained in connection with Saturday's drone explosion, Venezuela's Interior Minister Nestor Reverol reported.

According to the minister, one of the arrested suspects is accused of involvement in a 2017 attack on a military base, whereas another suspect was already detained in 2014 over involvement in anti-government protests.

Earlier in the day, Venezuela’s Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez told Sputnik that the attackers behind the assassination attempt against President Nicolas Maduro had been preparing the operation for at least six months.

"Quick reaction of President Maduro's security services not only allowed him to evacuate but also to quickly apprehend several perpetrators at the crime scene… Now they are providing us with all the details of the operation, which they had been preparing for at least six months," Rodriguez said

Maduro said that he was attacked by several drones loaded with explosives during his address at a public event in Caracas. The president and the officials, who were present at the demonstration, were unhurt in the incident. However, a total of seven servicemen were injured in the attack, according to Venezuelan Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez.

Argentine icon Diego Maradona accused the Venezuelan right-wing opposition and some foreign powers of what he called an "assassination attempt against the nation."

Trump Rescinds Obama-Era Rule for GMO Crop Use in Natural Wildlife Refuge

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The Trump administration has revoked Obama-era regulations limiting the use of pesticides in the National Wildlife Refuge System (NRWS), Fish and Wildlife Service Deputy Director Greg Sheehan said in a memorandum.

"Realizing that farming practices will continue into the foreseeable future within the NWRS… we must ensure that we are appropriately making use of farm practice innovations as we actively manage farm areas," Sheehan wrote in the memorandum obtained by The Hill.

The Department of Interior determined that the rule enforced by the previous Obama administration made it harder for refuges to meet their goals. The Obama administration argued in the past that chemicals pose risk to butterflies and birds and disturb the balance in the environment.

President Donald Trump has frequently criticized Obama's policies and claimed his environmental regulations were hurting businesses and farmers. Trump pledged to undo numerous rules established and enforced by the Obama administration and directed the Interior Department to revise a number of policies.

A part of the land that has been protected under the Obama regulation was also specifically kept in support the various species of birds.

Meanwhile, US Environmentalists said Friday that lifting the restriction poses a grave threat to pollinating insects and other sensitive creatures relying on toxic-free habitats afforded by wildlife refuges, Reuters reported.

"Industrial agriculture has no place on refuges dedicated to wildlife conservation and protection of some of the most vital and vulnerable species," Jenny Keating, federal lands policy analyst for the group Defenders of Wildlife was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Head of Syria research centre killed in car bombing

The head of a Syrian research facility that Western countries say was part of a chemical weapons programme was killed when his car was blown up, the pro-Syrian government newspaper al-Watan said on Sunday.

Aziz Asber was the director of the Syrian Scientific Research Centre in Masyaf, near the city of Hama, which Western governments say was a covert Syrian government installation.

“(Asber) died after an explosion targeted his car in the Hama countryside,” al-Watan said in an online report.

The explosion occurred on Saturday night, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitoring group said. Who or what caused it is not known.

The Masyaf facility has previously been hit by what the Syrian government said were Israeli strikes in July and last year in September.

In April, missile strikes by the United States, Britain and France destroyed a Syrian Scientific Research Centre facility in Damascus, in response to a suspected poison gas attack.

The Syrian government, backed by Russia, has denied using – or possessing – chemical weapons.

An Israeli government official declined to comment on reports of Asber’s death when asked by Reuters.

Israeli Construction Minister Yoav Gallant, a member of Netanyahu’s security cabinet, speaking to Israel’s Ynet TV said: “There is a war raging in Syria. A lot of sides are involved. There are a lot of interests … I read about him in the newspaper. He does not sound like a positive guy, to me.”

Update: Speaking on state TV a day after the alleged assassination attempt on Maduro, Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said that six people have been taken into custody and more arrests are possible in the coming hours. He also said that two drones carrying 1 kg each of C-4 explosive were "disoriented" by govt. signal blockers.

He added that the government has raided several Caracas hotels in search for evidence, and noted that one suspect linked to a 2017 attack on Carabobo military base, another to last year’s anti-government protests.

Meanwhile speculation that this was just another false flag attack to build popular support for Maduro's crumbling regime, continues to grow.
