Alberta Fact Check: B.C. academics claim Premier Smith threatens the Constitution and treaty rights

In an op-ed written for The Conversation, associate professors from University of Victoria, Gina Starblanket and James Rowe accuse Alberta Premier Danielle Smith of spreading “dangerous rhetoric” which threatens the Constitution and treaty rights.

In scheduling a referendum to be held asking if Albertans want to hold a binding referendum, Premier Smith may be trying to pacify sovereigntist sentiment within Alberta, but she isn’t threatening the Constitution or any treaty rights.

Her public statements have been expressly in support of federalism and don’t constitute dangerous rhetoric by any measure.

The Supreme Court reference case on the secession of Quebec determined that provincial secession has a legal pathway to pursue without constitutional roadblocks. The Clarity Act reinforced and codified that provincial right.

Child transgender-care advocate appointed president of Canadian Pediatric Society

A doctor heavily involved in the gender transition of minors is now the 2026-2027 head of the Canadian Pediatric Society (CPS).

On May 23, CPS announced Dr. Natasha Johnson would be their new president for a one-year term, the same doctor responsible for founding the Gender Diversity Clinic at McMaster's Children's Hospital back in 2016.

As the name implies, the clinic consists of "services for trans and gender-diverse youth."

Johnson also currently holds the titles of "Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for McMaster University's Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) Program," according to her McMaster University professor profile.

In a clip from CTV’s W5 back in 2021, Johnson was interviewed, where she expressed opinions such as how "detransitioning is not only rare — but focusing on it overshadows what she said is a high success rate," as paraphrased by W5.

"In Canada there is data about transition — there is a study of about 500 people who have gone through transition, which includes hormones, blockers, or surgery and 96% report they are satisfied," Johnson cited in the interview.

This contradicts many more recent findings, including a Finnish study from April, which found adolescents exhibited a significant increase of mental health issues after receiving medical gender reassignment surgery and/or hormones.

It was a longitudinal study, following over 2000 individuals under 23 years old who were given gender reassignment treatment between 1996 and 2019.

They found young adults who requested treatment were "significantly" more likely to have mental health issues than their peers before and after referral.

Notably, they discovered those who received treatment after 2010 had "greater" mental health issues both before and after treatment.

This may also suggest that after 2010 "mental health challenges [were more likely to] manifest as concerns related to gender identity."

The research opposes Johnson's statements — pointing instead to gender related concerns in youth being correlated with "mental health challenges," while youth experienced a significant increase in mental health issues after gender treatment.

When Johnson was challenged on the claims young adults do not have the mental bandwidth to make long-term, permanent decisions, she had the following to say:

"I think to assume that in general 13 year olds have no knowledge of the future or of the consequences of decisions, I think would be an overstatement."

"I think each young person needs to be assessed — it is important to share stories of the thousands of people who are satisfied with transition and report it was life-saving," remarked Johnson.

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Natasha Johnson as 2026-2027 President! We look forward to the expertise and passion she brings to the role," CPS wrote in their Facebook announcement.

As the National Post reports, CPS is one of the few remaining bodies still holding the position of immediately "affirming" children who report gender dysphoria.

Among those who are no longer taking this approach — the US, Australia, New Zealand, and many countries in Europe have all scrapped their gender "affirming" practices in recent years.

In the UK, when, in 2024, it released the Cass review, a government review of medical treatment related to gender dysphoria for minors, found thousands of minors were prescribed puberty-blocking hormonal treatments with "remarkably weak" evidence of effectiveness or of the long-term consequences.

Another similar statement was echoed back in February by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Medical Association (AMA) both issuing statements to surgeons to stop pushing gender surgeries for youth suggesting the causes of gender dysphoria were temporary.

CPS has not changed their "affirming" position on gender care for minors since 2023.

CPS' statement advocates for children as young as two years of age being capable of detecting a "mismatch" in their gender.

"While gender-affirming surgeries are less commonly performed in the adolescent population, TGD youth may identify surgery as one of their transition goals," it says.

Support for original MAiD law strong but Canadians divided on mental illness expansion

Canadians remain broadly supportive of the country's original assisted dying law, but new polling suggests support weakens sharply when eligibility is expanded to include people who are not near death or those seeking MAiD for mental illness alone.

A new Angus Reid Institute survey released Monday found 77% of Canadians still support the original 2016 Medical Assistance in Dying framework, which applied to people whose deaths were reasonably foreseeable and who were suffering from a severe and irremediable condition.

Support drops for the 2021 expansion of MAiD, which removed the requirement that a person's natural death be reasonably foreseeable.

Canadians are even more divided over whether MAiD should be available when mental illness is the sole underlying condition. The survey found 43% support that expansion, while 39% oppose it and 19% are unsure.

The findings suggest Canadians remain generally supportive of assisted dying in principle, but are increasingly uncertain about how far the law should go.

Mental illness as a sole condition is currently scheduled to become eligible for MAID in 2027, but Angus Reid found most Canadians are unaware of the pending change.

Among Canadians who say they are following the issue, 46% support expanding MAiD to include mental illness alone, while 44% oppose it.

The poll also found widespread concern over whether vulnerable Canadians have adequate support before MAiD eligibility is expanded further.

Nearly three-quarters of respondents, 74%, said government should be required to prove adequate housing, income supports and disability-related care are available to a person with a disability who requests MAiD.

Religious Canadians were more likely to express concern about the rising number of annual MAiD deaths. Angus Reid found 43% of religious Canadians were concerned about the increase, compared to 25% of non-religious Canadians.

The survey also found personal experience with MAiD affects public opinion. Canadians who know someone who used MAiD to end their life, representing 23% of respondents, were more likely to support each version of the law.

A man who beat a mother of three with a baseball bat during a home invasion in west-central British Columbia has been handed a provincial sentence of two years less a day, after a judge concluded he had turned his life around since the drug-fuelled attack.

Craig Brentton Durando, 25, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, assault with a weapon, and robbery in connection with the September 2023 incident at a Terrace, B.C. home. His sentence was delivered by the B.C. Supreme Court in a ruling last week.

The court heard that Durando and four other friends planned to confront and assault a man named Nicolas Balatti in his home after Balatti and one of the friends got into a “verbal altercation involving mutual threats” at a house party in August 2023, and continued the argument over TikTok and Snapchat.

The group made their way to Balatti’s home in the early hours of the morning of Sept. 5 after one of the men sent him a message stating “see you tonight” accompanied by a kiss emoji.

The court heard Durando, who was 22 at the time, was impaired by cocaine and alcohol when he kicked down the door of Balatti’s home to search for him.

Durando instead found Nicolas’ mother, Kelly Balatti, in bed, according to the agreed statement of facts. He told her to remove her jewelry and lie on the floor, then hit her multiple times with a baseball bat while demanding to know the whereabouts of Nicolas. Continue…

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand promoted a partnership between Canada and other middle powers during an address to Canada’s ambassadors, arguing that increased cooperation would reduce their reliance on global “hegemons.”

Speaking at a meeting of Canada’s ambassadors and high commissioners in Ottawa, Anand said that a partnership of Canada, the European Union, Australia, Japan, and South Korea has a larger combined GDP than the United States. She also said the countries’ total trade volume triples that of China.

“Purpose-built coalitions can make a difference, so that we, as middle powers, can drive prosperity together,” Anand said, adding that the countries should not be “relying on hegemons” for economic growth.

Prime Minister Mark Carney previously outlined Canada’s focus on strengthening cooperation among middle powers during a Jan. 20 address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The prime minister gave a speech urging countries not to comply with “great powers,” and said the rules-based international order had undergone a “rupture.”

Carney urged middle powers to deepen cooperation in response to pressure from unspecified major powers, which he said have begun “using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, [and] supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.”

The speech led U.S. President Donald Trump to withdraw his invitation for Carney to join the U.S.-led Board of Peace, which aims to secure enduring peace in conflict-affected regions, including an initial focus on Gaza reconstruction efforts. Continue…

The mother of Tumbler Ridge shooting survivor Maya Gebala says the family are unable to acquire housing in Canada, in an update to a GoFundMe page.

“It has been nearly impossible to acquire housing. knowing she will likely be in a wheelchair,” reads an update posted on behalf of Cia Edmonds, Maya’s mother, on May 29.

“For a while little Dahlia (Maya’s sister) and I stayed in a series of Airbnbs, thinking we would find a home soon.”

Edmonds added that this was “Under the implication that victim services would cover accommodations and expenses as they offer on the government website.”

However, she shared that the family doesn’t qualify for the “list of potential benefits covered for traumatized families searching for a new normal in an unthinkable situation.”

She wrote: “Turns out, legislation is written in such a way, we don’t qualify. So all and any expenses are left to be fulfilled by any organizations holding donations, that has literally saved us so far. Continue…

Feds spent more than $46M promoting COVID vaccines, can't say how much spent studying risks

The federal government spent more than $46 million on advertising, marketing and influencer campaigns to promote COVID-19 vaccines, but says it cannot provide a comprehensive accounting of how much money was spent researching vaccine risks and adverse effects.

The figures were disclosed in response to an order paper question submitted by Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall, who asked for a detailed breakdown of federal spending related to COVID-19 vaccine research, promotion, public education and risk communication.

According to the response from Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, the government ran a series of vaccine promotion campaigns between 2021 and 2023 costing at least $46.7 million.

Among the largest expenditures were:

$11.3 million for the "COVID-19 Vaccine – Ripple Effect" campaign in 2021;

$7 million for the "COVID-19 Vaccine – Kids" campaign;

$5.3 million for the "COVID-19 Vaccine – Ask the Experts" campaign;

$4.9 million for the "Educate and Build Trust" campaign;

$4.8 million for the "Parents" campaign;

More than $132,000 for a dedicated social media influencer campaign.

The government said the campaigns were intended to promote awareness of vaccine availability and provide Canadians with “science-based, factual information” about vaccine safety, effectiveness, side effects and eligibility. Advertising appeared across television, radio, social media, digital platforms, print media, search engines and outdoor advertising.

When asked how much money was spent investigating and researching the risks and adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines, however, Health Canada responded that the information is “not systematically tracked in a centralized database.”

The department said producing a complete response would require a manual collection and validation process that could result in incomplete or inaccurate information.

The government also declined to provide a dollar figure for spending specifically dedicated to informing Canadians about vaccine risks and adverse effects, instead grouping risk information together with broader vaccine education and promotion efforts.

Health Canada noted that its regulators reviewed 189 COVID-19 vaccine submissions between October 2020 and February 2026 and maintained that benefits and risks were often evaluated together as part of the approval process.

Separately, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research reported investing more than $74 million in COVID-19 vaccine research since 2019-20, though it said it does not centrally track the specific information requested in the Order Paper question.

The response leaves unanswered one of the key questions raised by Wagantall: how much taxpayer money was directed toward studying and communicating potential vaccine risks compared to the tens of millions spent promoting vaccine uptake.

Toronto’s Sankofa Square will host Pride events this year, as attention returns to the Ghanaian origins of the name and ongoing legislation in Ghana that would impose prison terms for LGBTQ identification and activity. The downtown Toronto landmark, formerly known as Yonge-Dundas Square, was renamed Sankofa Square as part of a municipal rebranding of one of the city’s most heavily used public spaces, due to the namesake's supposedly controversial views on slavery.

The name “Sankofa” comes from the Akan language of Ghana and is commonly associated with the idea of self-reflection. The square works as a central venue for concerts, demonstrations, and civic events in Toronto’s downtown core and is scheduled to host Pride programming under its new name.

In Ghana, though, lawmakers have approved a bill that would criminalize identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, with proposed prison terms of up to three years. The legislation also includes provisions criminalizing the promotion of LGBTQ-related activity and introduces a requirement for members of the public to report prohibited conduct.

The bill still requires approval from President John Dramani Mahama before it can become law. It comes amid continued pressure from religious leaders calling for stricter enforcement of laws relating to sexual orientation.

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, who sponsored the legislation, said it was intended to strengthen existing legal provisions. He said it would make them "more robust, more encompassing and more stringent in dealing with the practices of LGBTQI" he said, according to BBC.

Same-sex relations are already illegal in Ghana under colonial-era laws that remain in force. The new bill expands penalties and enforcement mechanisms, including provisions that could apply to individuals described as “allies” of LGBTQ people in certain circumstances.
