Alberta Fact Check: Alberta's big-city mayors have bigger problems than Alberta's referendum (Must see Videos)

https://www.rebelnews.com/alberta_fact_check_alberta_s_big_city_mayors_have_bigger_problems_than_alberta_s_referendum

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas has joined Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack and Red Deer Mayor Cindy Jefferies in a video urging Albertans to vote against Alberta's October independence referendum.

The mayors warn that even discussing Alberta's future could create uncertainty and threaten economic prosperity. "Leaving Canada would create uncertainty for Alberta’s economy, threaten jobs and investment, and put at risk the quality of life we’ve worked so hard to build," Farkas wrote on X.

But before Albertans take constitutional advice from municipal politicians, they might reasonably ask how things are going in the cities those politicians were elected to run. Continue…

Alberta Fact Check: Naheed Nenshi claims companies won’t invest in pipelines that cross borders. He's wrong

https://www.rebelnews.com/alberta_fact_check_naheed_nenshi_claims_companies_won_t_invest_in_pipelines_that_cross_borders_he_s_wrong

In a radio interview on a Northern Alberta radio station, NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi implied companies won’t invest in Alberta energy infrastructure due to the pending independence referendum.

He said, “Who is going to invest tens of billions into a pipeline if they don’t know what country that pipeline is in? Or if it has to cross an international border to reach tidewater?”

Dozens of companies are willing to invest billions of dollars to build pipelines that cross borders. Currently, there are over 200 major oil and gas pipelines operating or in planning that cross international borders to get products to foreign markets.

The Druzhba (Friendship) Pipeline carries 1.2 to 1.4 million barrels per day of oil from Russia and crosses over seven international borders. Those borders have changed many times over the years, but the pipeline has remained in operation. Pipelines can outlast countries in some circumstances. Continue…

Ontario seeks undercover 'mystery shoppers' to investigate driver training fraud

https://www.rebelnews.com/ontario_seeks_undercover_mystery_shoppers_to_investigate_driver_training_fraud

The Ontario government is preparing to send undercover investigators into driver training schools across the province amid ongoing concerns about fraud, falsified records, and improperly trained commercial drivers.

According to a procurement notice posted by the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario is seeking vendors to provide "regulatory compliance audit and mystery shop services" to identify and address fraud and non-compliance among organizations that deliver driver training and testing programs. The services would operate year-round across Ontario during the 2027-28 fiscal year.

The move comes after years of scandals involving Ontario's commercial driver training industry.

A 2025 audit found some ministry-approved truck driving schools were accrediting students who had not completed the mandatory 103.5 hours of entry-level training required for a Class A licence. Investigators found instances where schools could not produce records proving students completed required training, employed unqualified instructors, or had students sign off on hours that were never delivered. Undercover students enrolled by auditors were offered significantly less training than legally required. Continue…

Tax Freedom Day arrives June 9 as Canadians spend first five months working for government

https://www.rebelnews.com/tax_freedom_day_arrives_june_9_as_canadians_spend_first_five_months_working_for_government

Canadians will finally begin working for themselves on June 9, according to the annual Tax Freedom Day report released by the Fraser Institute.

Tax Freedom Day marks the point in the year when the average Canadian family has earned enough income to pay its total tax bill to all levels of government. If taxes had to be paid upfront in one lump sum, Canadians would spend the first 159 days of the year paying federal, provincial, and municipal governments before keeping a dollar for themselves.

The institute estimates that the average Canadian family will earn $166,790 in income in 2026 and pay $72,539 in total taxes, amounting to 43.5 per cent of its income. Those taxes include income taxes, payroll taxes, sales taxes, fuel taxes, property taxes and other government levies.

This year's Tax Freedom Day falls one day later than it did in 2025, when Canadians reached the milestone on June 8. Last year, the average family paid an estimated $68,266 in taxes, representing 43.1 per cent of income.

"Tax Freedom Day helps put the total tax burden into perspective," the Fraser Institute noted in announcing this year's figures. According to the report, Canadians now work more than five months of the year before they have theoretically paid off their collective tax obligations.

Taxpayers foot $1.6 million bill for Alto's high-speed rail 'consultations'

https://www.rebelnews.com/taxpayers_foot_1_6_million_bill_for_alto_s_high_speed_rail_consultations

Ottawa is spending big bucks to inadvertently sell Canadians on its ambitious and increasingly controversial $90-billion high-speed rail project through the Quebec City–Toronto corridor.

A new parliamentary response reveals that Crown corporation Alto poured over $1.59 million into advertising the consultation period between 2022 and April 15, 2026.

Every dollar spent was part of Alto’s broader public relations campaign to “inform the public about the consultation process in their region.”

The Transportation Ministry breaks down the spending into two main categories: "Subscriber" campaigns running primarily from mid-October 2025 to March 2026, and a larger "Public consultations" push from mid-January to late April 2026. Continue…

If red-flag laws exist, why are Quebec police investigating licensed gun owners without cause?

https://www.rebelnews.com/if_red_flag_laws_exist_why_are_quebec_police_investigating_licensed_gun_owners_without_cause

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has launched a new initiative that sees police contacting the spouses of licensed firearms owners in an effort to identify potential cases of domestic violence where a firearm may be present in the home.

The program was introduced in response to concerns about intimate partner violence and a series of high-profile femicides in Quebec.

But it raises an important question: if Canada already has extensive laws allowing authorities to intervene when domestic violence is suspected, why are police proactively investigating people who have not been accused of any wrongdoing?

Canada's firearms laws already provide multiple mechanisms to address genuine safety concerns.

Police can seize firearms when there are reasonable grounds to believe public safety is at risk. Firearms licences can be suspended or revoked. Courts can issue protection orders.

The federal government's so-called red-flag and yellow-flag provisions were specifically introduced to allow firearms to be removed from potentially dangerous situations before violence occurs.

Those tools are designed to respond to evidence, complaints, witness statements, threats, or other indicators of risk.

The SQ initiative appears to operate differently. Continue…
