"Debug": Google Seeks Federal Approval To Release Millions Of Mosquitoes In California, Florida

Google is seeking federal approval for a new program called "Debug" that would release up to 32 million mosquitoes in California and Florida to combat disease-carrying mosquitoes already found in the wild.

Pitched as a program to "stop bad mosquitoes by raising and releasing good ones," Google's Debug brings together a group of scientists and engineers to create technology to breed and release sterile mosquitoes to try to eliminate the ones that transmit diseases to animals and humans.

The Federal Register noted on May 1 that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reviewing Google's request for an experimental permit under section 5 of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. Public comment on the permit request must be received by June 5.

Despite their small size, mosquitoes are considered the "deadliest animal" in the world, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There are more than 3,700 types of mosquitoes worldwide, and some are more dangerous than others.

The species Google's Debug is targeting - Aedes aegypti - carries dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Some mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, malaria, and lymphatic filariasis, killing more humans than any other creature worldwide.

Malaria alone killed at least 597,000 people throughout 83 countries in 2023, the last year the data were available. That same year, the United States saw cases of "locally acquired" mosquito-transmitted malaria for the first time in two decades.

A "locally acquired" case of malaria means the victim was bitten by a mosquito carrying the parasite in the United States, rather than contracting the illness abroad while traveling.

There are roughly 2,000 cases of malaria reported in the United States every year, with most of them coming from people traveling overseas in places where malaria is rampant. West Nile virus is the leading culprit of mosquito-borne disease in the United States. More than 120 deaths are reported each year, with roughly 2,000 people experiencing the illness.

In Debug's landing page, Google notes that most mosquito-transmitted diseases lack effective vaccines or treatments.

"Attacking mosquitoes with pesticides is unsustainable because they're becoming less effective over time and can be toxic. Clearing standing water is not enough because people can never find all the places that mosquitoes breed," Google states on the project's website. "We need a new approach."

Emphasis on Gates's image has likely increased since January 30, when the Department of Justice (DOJ) released bombshell documents that seemingly unveiled more details about his friendship with Epstein.

The files contained an email Epstein wrote to himself claiming that Gates slept with Russian girls, contracted a sexually transmitted disease, and then planned to slip antibiotics to his then-wife, Melinda French Gates. He previously denied the STD and antibiotics claims and has always denied all allegations of impropriety.

“Misleading, deceptive”. Judge scathing on ‘Undercover Jew’ stunt by NewsCorp, Israel activist

NewsCorp’s Undercover Jew stunt with Israeli activist Ofir Birenbaum and The Daily Telegraph turned ugly in court this week.

Israeli activist Ofir Birenbaum’s public boast that “The Truth Wins” was looking a little awkward after the Daily Telegraph’s “undercover Jew” and former IDF soldier had his evidence and honesty questioned in a bruising Federal Court appearance.

The man at the centre of the newspaper’s fumbled antisemitic sting at Cairo Takeaway in February 2025, was back in court this week facing allegations he’d breached the terms of the deed of settlement in a previous case involving himself, the newspaper and the popular suburban restaurant.

Birenbaum entered the witness box with his chest out and his gaze steady, but exited it with the presiding judge repeatedly questioning the credibility of his evidence.

“I didn’t find him to be a credible witness,”

Justice Robert Bromwich told Birenbaum’s counsel, saying he’d been “misleading and deceptive”.

The attempt, last year, to provoke an anti-semitic incident sparked a legal case that the court heard was “an example of the partisan division in this city”.

Gotcha selves

Birenbaum entered the Middle Eastern café with its famous Scottie Marsh Palestine mural on its outside wall, wearing prominent Jewish symbols on his clothing. A Daily Telegraph crew, headed by journalist Danielle Gusmaroli, waited outside for the “gotcha” moment with another photographer.

Internal emails leaked to MWM in 2025 revealed that the newspaper had labelled the attempted sting “UNDERCOVER JEW”.

The sting unravelled, but the café was sued by Birenbaum for defamation and received an immediate apology after it proved that some of the initial allegations made in the heat of the moment about his behaviour were false.

The café counter sued him and the newspaper for trespass.

Birenbaum and Gusmaroli had reportedly attempted a similar stunt on another occasion. Wendy Bacon reported here last year on the pair’s failed attempt to capture covert footage at an Invasion Day rally. The Israeli-born activist has a track record for showing up to rallies calling for peace in Palestine.

Confidential settlement

The case involving Cairo, the former IDF soldier and the newspaper was settled in March this year with terms that remained confidential and an agreed statement which concluded:

“All parties are pleased that these issues have now been resolved in a constructive and satisfactory manner. In doing so, they acknowledge that all Australians should be able to safely express their racial or religious affiliation as well as debate issues in a respectful and dignified fashion. The parties hope that the fact of a resolution can be a positive example for others.”

The peace did not last long enough, however, for the agreed statement to be published. Birenbaum pre-empted the release, which all parties had agreed to, by claiming vindication in a statement that was widely distributed under the headline THE TRUTH WINS to sympathetic media types.

Israeli military targeting first responders in southern Lebanon

Rescuers have come under attack in and around the city of Nabatieh as the IDF moves deeper into the country, Ali Rida Sbeity reports

The Israeli military is targeting rescue workers in and around the city of Nabatieh as it expands its offensive into southern Lebanon, RT correspondent Ali Rida Sbeity reported from the ground on Monday.

The reporter traveled through the city, accompanying first responders as they searched for survivors amid the rubble left behind by Israeli strikes. Rescue teams “have been targeted a few times in the area,” resulting in a number of fatalities, according to Sbeity.

Moreover, Al-Najda Al-Shaabiya Hospital – one of the few medical facilities still operating in the area – came under Israeli attack over the weekend, the RT journalist reported, while noting that the situation in Nabatieh is escalating by the hour.

On Sunday, West Jerusalem announced that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had captured Beaufort Castle, also known as Qalaat al-Chakif, which is situated at a key vantage point in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military had previously used the medieval Crusader fortress as a base before withdrawing from the country in 2000.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he has ordered the IDF to “deepen and expand our hold in places” that were supposedly under the control of Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

The development coincided with an intensification in Israeli aerial bombardment of southern Lebanon in recent days.

Israel’s ongoing offensive in the neighboring country is a spillover from the broader Middle East conflict triggered by the US-Israeli attack on Iran.

While Tehran and Washington reached a fragile ceasefire in mid-April, the hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have never ceased.

On Monday, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the Islamic Republic was halting “negotiations and exchange of messages” with the US until Israel stops its military operations in Lebanon and in Gaza.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, more than 3,200 people have been killed and nearly 10,000 injured since early March.

Last month, the Lebanese Health Ministry accused the IDF of deliberately targeting medics during airstrikes on the country, with the UN previously estimating that at least 103 Lebanese medical workers have been killed and 230 injured during the current conflict.

US President Donald Trump reportedly lashed out at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call earlier today, calling him “fucking crazy” as he demanded that Israel agree to a ceasefire with Lebanon’s Hezbollah, and claimed the premier owes him for keeping him out of jail.

Axios cites a US official summarizing Trump’s message to Netanyahu as follows: “You’re fucking crazy. You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your ass. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this.”

While US officials tell the news site that Trump is aware that Hezbollah has been firing repeatedly at Israel and that Jerusalem has a right to respond, he believes that the IDF has responded disproportionately in recent days, risking Washington’s efforts to secure a ceasefire extension with Iran — which is conditioning a deal on a truce in Lebanon.

Trump “steamrolled” Netanyahu on the call, and “Bibi said, ‘OK, OK, just make sure everything is taken care of,'” the US official tells Axios.

US officials are also quoted saying that Trump told Netanyahu that he has kept him out of prison, a reference to Trump’s repeated public demand that President Isaac Herzog pardon the prime minister, who is in the midst of a lengthy corruption trial.

Netanyahu’s office does not respond to a request for comment.
