The Lebanon escalation: Netanyahu is betting Trump can’t stop him

As Israel expands the war in Lebanon, Washington’s influence over its closest ally looks increasingly limited

In recent days, Israel has intensified its military campaign in Lebanon, taking the operation to a whole new level. This isn’t just another exchange of strikes in the south of the country, but a demonstrative expansion of Israel’s ground presence beyond the previous boundaries of the conflict. Israeli forces crossed the Litani River and captured Beaufort Castle, a symbolically and strategically significant fortress perched on a high cliff in southern Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the operation was carried out at the direction of the political and military leadership, while the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) explained its objective as the elimination of Hezbollah infrastructure and fighters in the Beaufort area.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the capture of Beaufort as a “dramatic stage and a dramatic change” in Israel’s policy in Lebanon. The goal is to deepen and expand control over areas previously under Hezbollah’s influence. Essentially, this means that Israel is no longer limiting itself to targeted strikes and border deterrence. It is now attempting to create a new military-political reality in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah’s former zone of influence is to be transformed into an area of either direct or indirect Israeli control.

The significance of these actions extends beyond the Lebanese front, however. In recent weeks, Netanyahu has essentially been playing the same game: trying to undermine any kind of agreement between Iran and the United States. The negotiation track was already extremely fragile, vague, and fraught with mutual distrust. But for Israel, even the slightest chance of a compromise between Washington and Tehran is unacceptable. If Trump finally relinquishes the idea of a direct military escalation (such a scenario is unlikely but still possible) and attempts to broker at least a temporary deal with Iran, Israel risks finding itself without the previous level of American involvement, but with the lingering threat of an ‘axis of resistance’ that has every chance of resurfacing in the near future.

This is precisely why the expansion of the operation in Lebanon can be seen as a tool for exerting pressure not only on Hezbollah, but also on the entire negotiation framework surrounding Iran. Netanyahu is demonstrating that even if Washington is willing to discuss de-escalation, Israel retains the right to expand the theater of military operations where it deems necessary. He is thereby forcing Iran to respond, raising the cost of negotiations for Tehran, and simultaneously making it more difficult for Trump to present the diplomatic process as manageable and successful.

Iran’s reaction was almost immediate. Tehran announced its withdrawal from negotiations with the US, citing Israel’s actions in Lebanon. Iran’s logic is understandable: the Lebanese front was seen as part of a broader ceasefire, and Tehran perceives the Israeli operation as a violation of the regional balance of agreements. For Iran, this is a convenient argument to demonstrate that Washington is either incapable of controlling Israel’s actions or is deliberately allowing them while talking about de-escalation.

In other words, Netanyahu achieved the intended effect: US-Iran negotiations have come under additional pressure. Israel formally explains the operation as necessary to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure and ensure the security of Israel’s northern regions. But politically, it appears to be an attempt to disrupt any – even temporary – stabilization of the situation between Washington and Tehran. For Netanyahu, a ceasefire is dangerous because it would draw attention back to the responsibilities of his government, the internal crisis, and the cost of a protracted war. The continuation of the conflict, however, gives a legitimate reason to declare a state of emergency, issue mobilization orders, and focus on security.

In this situation, the US has proposed a new ceasefire initiative to Israel and Lebanon. The American plan appears quite pragmatic: in the first stage, Hezbollah must cease all attacks on Israeli territory, and Israel, in turn, would refrain from escalating the conflict in Beirut. In other words, Washington is not so much trying to resolve the Lebanese crisis definitively as to urgently stop its escalation before it derails the broader plan, which primarily involves negotiations with Iran.

WTF? Israel is waging a war of aggression with the intent of stealing land for Oded Yinon plan and Trumps enabling that!

Hezbollah must withdraw from Israeli-occupied southern Lebanon – US

West Jerusalem and Beirut have agreed to implement a renewed ceasefire after US-mediated talks in Washington

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a renewed ceasefire that requires Hezbollah to stop firing and withdraw its operatives from southern Lebanon, according to a joint statement released after US-mediated talks at the State Department on Wednesday.

The talks followed weeks of Israeli strikes and ground operations in Lebanon, as well as Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel. Washington has said previous ceasefire efforts were undermined by Hezbollah attacks carried out without the approval of the Lebanese government.

“The ceasefire is contingent on a complete cessation of Hizbollah fire and the evacuation of all Hizbollah operatives from the South Litani Sector,” the joint statement read. “The two sides agreed with the guidance of the United States to swiftly advance the creation of pilot zones in which the Lebanese Armed Forces will take exclusive control of the territory to the exclusion of all non-state actors.”

US Formally Rejects Somaliland Sovereignty In Blow To Israel

The US has reaffirmed “the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Somalia, in a move seen as a blow to Somaliland, the breakaway region recently recognized by Israel and close to the United Arab Emirates. In a report to Congress on “Potential Areas for Improved United States Engagement with Somaliland”, the US State Department stated that Somaliland was included in the Federal Republic of Somalia.

“Within that framework, the United States maintains a positive, constructive relationship with Somaliland and continues to explore additional opportunities for engagement with Somaliland authorities,” the report says. Israel became the first country in the world to formally recognize Somaliland on December 26 last year.

The month before, Somaliland President Abdirahman Abdullahi Mohamed secretly visited Israel, meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other “top officials”, according to multiple sources in Somalia and Somaliland.

Those other officials included Mossad chief David Barnea and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who visited Somaliland immediately after Israel formally recognised the former British colony’s sovereignty.

'Recognition is bigger than anything else. Do you have an alternative for us?'

  • Rooble Mohamed, Somaliland government adviser

Somaliland has since recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, establishing an embassy there as meetings between Somaliland and Israeli ministers have continued and pro-Israel figures in the media have taken up the cause of independence for the breakaway Somali region.

Jake Wallis Simons, former editor of the Jewish Chronicle, and Andrew Fox, an associate fellow at the right-wing Henry Jackson Society, were flown out to Somaliland for the May 18th self-declared independence day celebrations in Hargeisa, the region’s capital. Both men are ardent supporters of Israel. The UK’s former defence minister, Conservative MP Gavin Williamson, another keen supporter of Somaliland, was also part of the trip.

Somaliland is hoping that Israel’s recognition will be followed by the UAE, with Ethiopia, India, Cyprus and Georgia also in its sights.

Trump not expected to recognize Somaliland

A congressional source told Middle East Eye they did not expect US President Donald Trump’s administration to recognise Somaliland. Though lobbyists, including former Trump officials Tibor Nagy and Peter Pham, had raised the hopes of Somalilanders over US recognition, “there was never a sign that the president would go through with it,” the source said.

Trump has persistently singled out Somalia and Somali Americans for abuse during his second term in office. He has referred to Somalis as “low IQ people” and said that all Somalis are “crooked as hell”. He has said that Somali American congresswoman Ilhan Omar “is garbage”, and that “her friends are garbage”.

A Somali analyst and policy adviser, who could not be named as he works with officials in both Somalia and Somaliland, told MEE he thought the report to Congress was “a consequential announcement that may effectively close the door on any lingering hopes of US recognition for Somaliland”.

'Putin's Davos' Forum Opens Under Heavy Ukrainian Drone Attack, With Candace Owens & Trump Official In Attendance

Ukraine's President Zelensky has freshly stated that he's ready for direct talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in order to end the war, but he also warned that the alternative is for Ukraine to increase its retaliatory strikes on Russia,

The head of Ukraine's Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov, stated this week: "Zelensky has instructed officials to try to end this war as quickly as possible, preferably before winter." But the ground war reality as well the escalating tit-for-tat air campaigns, tell a different story of a brutal and largely stalemated conflict which is likely to just grind on for the foreseeable future.

Broke black plumes of smoke rose over St. Petersburg just as thousands of guests from 130 countries were due to attend. Importantly, this has included 'low level' Trump administration delegation.

BBC writes, "Mobile internet was disrupted and St Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport was temporarily closed, while some regions of nearby Latvia and Estonia also issued air raid alerts." Dozens of regional flights were also delayed.

President Zelensky boastfully owned up to it, after Kiev has already come under heavy Russian bombardment this week. Zelensky commented Wednesday: "Ukraine’s plan for long-range sanctions is being implemented exactly as needed to bring peace closer."

He tweeted footage of the aftermath of Ukrainian drones hitting the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal. Nearby Kronstadt, home to the headquarters base of the Russian Navy's Baltic Fleet, also reportedly suffered attack.

Netanyahu says the Iran War is so unpopular because Americans are too dumb to understand that fighting Israel's wars makes them safer.

"People don't see the direct connection with the dangers they would face tomorrow with the actions we're doing today to remove those dangers."

"Democracies always have that problem, they'll always look at the moment, what's the next election cycle, what's the next headline and so on. Dictatorships are usually immune to this because they don't really have public opinion to answer to."

How comforting.

WOW they just threatened to kill his entire family

Tucker Amalek Carlson

Tucker Carlson's attack on Benjamin Netanyahu's use of the word 'Amalek' reveals either a profound ignorance of Jewish history or a deliberate distortion of it

The meaning of Amalek

In Judaism, Amalek represents the archetype of pure, irrational evil and the ultimate enemy of the Jewish people. The concept operates on three main levels: historical enmity, spiritual cynicism, and the moral necessity to recognize and confront evil.

Throughout Jewish history, the archetype of Amalek has been applied to anyone who attacks the Jewish people without cause, preying on the weak and attempting to destroy Jewish continuity. It represents irrational, baseless hatred (antisemitism) that refuses to negotiate and must be confronted with absolute moral clarity.

On the Shabbat before Purim, many congregations read Parshat Zachor (Deuteronomy 25:17–20). In the three short verses of this parshah, we are commanded not once but twice to recall a dangerous attack on the Jewish people. We are told to remember (Zachor) what the Amalekites did to the Israelites after they left Egypt and not to forget (Lo Tishkach).

The banner from the permanent exhibit at Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial reads in Hebrew: “Remember what Amalek has done to you.”

This is precisely why Prime Minister Netanyahu's use of the term Amalek was so significant, and why Tucker Carlson's interpretation is so profoundly misleading.

For thousands of years, Jews have remembered Amalek not because they seek revenge, but because they understand a timeless truth: evil exists. Evil attacks the innocent. Evil preys on the weak. Evil must be recognized before it can be defeated.

In Jewish philosophy, particularly in Chassidic tradition, Amalek is an internal spiritual force rather than merely an external physical enemy.

Tucker Carlson's dangerous distortion

How dumb can you be and still breathe?

Tucker Carlson took this deeply rooted Jewish concept and transformed it into something it has never meant.

Is it actually possible that Tucker Carlson is completely ignorant of Jewish history and has not made an attempt to learn the facts? It is highly unlikely.

Remembering Amalek has nothing to do with genocide. The accusation itself turns reality upside down. The victims of one of history's greatest genocides are now accused of genocide because they remember their history. The descendants of Holocaust survivors are told that recalling an ancient enemy is proof of murderous intent. Such claims do not illuminate the truth; they obscure it. When the Jewish people remember Amalek during Holocaust Remembrance Day, they are not calling for the genocide of the German people. When they remember Amalek during Purim, they are not calling for the genocide of the Persian people.

For Tucker Carlson to accuse Prime Minister Netanyahu of intentionally targeting the Palestinians of Gaza for genocide is straight out of the Hitler playbook.

Trump may resume Iran war if US troops are killed as nuclear talks hit new obstacle

Trump told advisers he could resume military action if Iran kills US troops, while CNN reported talks are stalled over Tehran’s demand for compensation; Amid continued Gulf clashes, the House approved a measure requiring congressional approval for a prolonged campaign

U.S. President Donald Trump told aides in closed-door talks that he would consider ending the ceasefire with Iran and returning to combat if Tehran kills American troops, the Wall Street Journal reported overnight between Wednesday and Thursday, citing U.S. officials. The officials stressed that for now the pause is holding, despite frequent exchanges of fire in the Gulf, including mutual strikes between the U.S. and Iran, which has also attacked its neighbors.

On Wednesday evening, while signing an executive order easing the firing of federal employees, Trump said of talks with Iran that they are “going very well” and that a deal could happen over the weekend. He stressed: “They've already agreed they're not going to have a nuclear weapon.” He claimed that says the Strait of Hormuz will reopen “immediately upon signing” an agreement with Tehran" and also addressed the exchange of fire: “You know, there's a reason for everything. And we hit them pretty hard the night before, and actually last night.” Regarding the ceasefire, he said: “In this part of the world, a ceasefire means people are shooting at each other a little less.”

Meanwhile, overnight the House of Representatives approved a resolution requiring Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from the Iran region or obtain congressional approval to continue the military campaign. The vote passed 215 to 208, after four Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting the move.

The resolution has no binding legal force that would lead to an immediate withdrawal of forces, since such legislation requires either the president’s signature or a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress to override a veto. Still, U.S. media noted the move is intended to increase political pressure on the president, amid a war now in its fourth month despite the ceasefire.

In Tehran, officials insist on financial compensation in the initial stage of any agreement.

In recent days it has not even been clear whether the sides are continuing negotiations. Trump says talks are ongoing and this week claimed the ceasefire could be extended next week, without specifying whether he meant a full framework agreement or only an extension of the truce. Tehran, however, has recently denied that talks are taking place at all, saying there are “no exchanges of messages with the United States.” The Iranian news agency Tasnim, which is close to the regime, also reported that “Iran has suspended exchanges of messages via intermediaries,” blaming alleged Israeli violations in Lebanon.
