The “lake that used to be” in inland California that people often talk about is Tulare Lake (also called Tache Lake or Pa’ashi by the Tachi Yokut people).
What Tulare Lake was

It lay in the southern San Joaquin Valley, spanning parts of today’s Tulare, Kings, and Kern counties—roughly between modern Hanford, Corcoran, and Kettleman City.
For much of the 1800s it was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River, over 100 miles long and 30 miles wide in wet years.

Tulare Lake was fed mainly by snowmelt from the Kern, Kaweah, Tule, and Kings Rivers, with no natural outlet, so water spread out into this broad inland lake.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, large‑scale irrigation projects and river diversions for farms and towns dried the lakebed; by around the 1890s it was effectively gone, though it has re‑appeared temporarily during very wet years, including 2023–2024.
