RSF launches coordinated drone attacks on Omdurman, Damazin and Abu Jubeiha

June 5, Omdurman / Damazin — The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a series of coordinated drone attacks at dawn on Friday, targeting Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) military sites across Khartoum State, South Kordofan State, and the Blue Nile Region.
The simultaneous strikes underscore a growing reliance by both warring parties on strategic and kamikaze drones during the latest phase of the conflict, which has been raging since April 15, 2023.
Local sources told Sudan Tribune that strategic drones operated by the RSF bombarded military positions in South Kordofan and the Blue Nile Region.
The aerial bombardment specifically targeted sites in the town of Abu Jubeiha in South Kordofan, as well as positions in Damazin, the capital of the Blue Nile Region.
The fighting front in the Blue Nile Region—located in Sudan’s far southeast—has seen a significant resurgence since last February.

Meanwhile, in Khartoum State, a military source not authorized to speak to the press told Sudan Tribune that SAF anti-aircraft defense systems intercepted a strategic drone flying over the far western outskirts of Omdurman at dawn on Friday.
Eyewitnesses in Omdurman supported this account, reporting that they heard at least four powerful explosions rocking the western sector of the city shortly after midnight on Thursday.
In response to the multi-pronged assault, SAF drones carried out retaliatory strikes against RSF targets along the Bara axis in North Kordofan State.

Mullin says feds still ‘a little behind’ in counter-UAS prep
(Editor’s note: This story is part of a series of reports on efforts to establish new counter-UAS protocols in the U.S. to protect high-profile sporting events and critical infrastructure from the potential threats posed by drones flown by careless or hostile actors.)
About a week before the kick-off of the first match, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin testified that federal security agencies and their partners still are “a little behind” in standing up counter-UAS capabilities at all planned sites in U.S. cities hosting FIFA World Cup tournament events.
“We have spent a tremendous amount of ability and money to be able to be very offensive with drones. But on the counter-drone measures everybody’s a little behind,” Mullin said June 3 at a hearing of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee on the Department of Homeland Security’s budget request.
“Our countermeasures with drones, is — I wouldn’t say a vulnerability — but it is one of the areas that we are struggling with every single day,” he said.
Over the past year, DHS, the FBI and other federal agencies have worked for countless hours and spent millions of dollars to attempt to establish counter-UAS capabilities in the 11 American cities hosting World Cup events.
In his testimony, Mullin said the potential threat of unwanted drones in the airspace over FIFA activities is his biggest security concern, as the nation prepares to host what is being billed as the largest sporting event in history.
He said DHS agencies, including Customs and Border Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard, would oversee counter-drone operations at eight of the stadiums scheduled to host World Cup matches beginning on June 11.
Meanwhile, the FBI will provide counter-UAS protection at three stadiums holding FIFA matches.
Mullin said that in recent weeks, DHS has improved its counter-drone capabilities at large-scale events.
He said officials were able to successfully ground eight drones that have violated restricted airspace during the Miami Grand Prix F1 Race held last month. He said officials were able to identify and arrest the pilots of at least some of those UAVs.
“During the Augusta golf tournament, we had 12 that entered a no-fly zone. We were able to bring those down, too,” he said.
“Every single day we improve, but that is a huge concern that we have within the stadiums. I also have concerns outside the stadiums, in the FanFest area and the soft areas that’re outside security.”

Mullin said providing counter-drone protections for these so-called “soft areas” has been one of his biggest concerns as DHS works to ensure the safety of all World Cup-related site.
“When we start talking about the soft areas, having great cooperation with local law enforcement is vitally important to us,” he said. “We’ve asked for some states to help with National Guard. They could use it for a training event if they wanted to on some of these weekends.”
Mullin blamed the partial government shutdown as having had a big impact on the department’s ability to prepare counter-UAS operations in time for the start of the World Cup games.
The shutdown, which took place from February 14 to April 30, resulted in the closure of most non-essential DHS operations and slowed the department’s efforts to fund counter-UAS programs.
“We had to start prioritizing when we came back alive after 76 days of being shut down,” he said.
As a result of the shutdown, DHS didn’t have the employees needed for the department to be able to issue the $250 million FEMA grant money that had been earmarked for FIFA host cities and for the Washington, D.C. region, where many America250 events are slated to take place.
He said that as a result of the slowdown in funding, DHS has had to delay its longer-term plans to stand up the counter-UAS operations it plans to put in place in time for the 2028 Olympics to be held in Las Angeles.
“We’re not totally caught up, but we’re close to being caught up. And as soon as FIFA’s over, July 19, we will be able to start focusing on the Olympics again,” he said.
Role played by National Counter UAS Training Center
Mullin praised the role the FBI’s National Counter UAS Training Center at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville; Alabama is playing in the development of DHS’s broader counter-drone strategy.
The NCUTC has trained 60 state and local law enforcement officers from all over the country and qualified them in the use of drone-mitigation technology.
“Quite frankly, we’re going to be bringing people from all over the world, to be able to train in this facility,” Mullin stated.
Representative Michael McCaul, a senior member and former chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, questioned Mullin as to whether DHS was prepared to deal with potential drone threats from terrorist organizations or rogue state actors.
“My biggest concern are the drone threats as we’ve seen from Iranian Shahed drones,” the Texas Republican said. He added that he feared that the type of drone warfare seen in Ukraine and Russia could be duplicated with a similar attack on U.S soil.
Mullin said that such attacks were a major concern of his as well, and that federal security and intelligence agencies are working tirelessly to forestall such a scenario. But he also said he was worried about the potential harm that could be inflicted by a single misguided drone operator.
“The lone individual that’s got this crazy mindset about him — maybe it’s because of too much alcohol, maybe it’s because of the temperature, maybe it’s because his team lost, maybe because he’s too excited — whatever it is, those areas do concern me,” he said.
“But we have a lot of partnerships with our local law enforcement that are going to be out there in those areas to make them as hardened as they can be and to take the soft look away.”

Are we really alone? It’s a fair question that has been asked and answered a million different ways over the years. In 2026, we’ve been given more information about extraterrestrial life than ever before, and yet there are still plenty of questions to ask.
Many musicians have been fascinated by aliens and space. Not only have they imbued it into their music, but they’ve made it part of their personalities and personas. The three rockers below all believed in extraterrestrials and made it a part of their artistry.
Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix made his belief in aliens well known. “Galacticans from outer space…would come to our planet to help mankind,” Hendrix reportedly once told his friends.
Of course, it’s easy to write this off as drug-fuelled nonsense, but the earnestness of his belief cannot be denied.
That belief then made its way into his music. Hendrix was said to be inspired by sci-fi works like Night of Light by Philip Jose Farmer while conceptualizing “Purple Haze.”
Revisit the track above with the notion that Hendrix was inspired by space. It gives it an entirely different feeling.
John Lennon
Another firm believer in the idea that we are not alone was John Lennon. Apparently, in 1974, Lennon experienced a UFO sighting that completely shaped his worldview moving forward.
Again, Lennon was a frequent drug taker, but even then, he was not alone in this belief.
He also took to singing about space and extraterrestrial activity. In “Out The Blue,” he sings, “Like a U.F.O., you came to me,” and in “Nobody Told Me,” he sings, “There’s UFOs over New York, and I ain’t too surprised.”
His longtime questioning of aliens and out-of-this-world activity was a mainstay in his music.
Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley was another believer, having experienced a “vision” from an extraterrestrial at a young age.
“His father told us he’d gone out to have a cigarette at 2 am during the delivery, and when he looked up into the skies above their little shack, he saw the strangest blue light.
He knew right then and there that something special was happening,” Presley’s assistant Larry Geller once said.
According to Presley, the alien gave him a vision of his future in which he would be a performer wearing a white jumpsuit. Sound familiar? That eerily prescient view of the future has to sway some non-believers, at least a little bit.

Manchester astronomer leads global overhaul of rules for announcing the detection of extraterrestrial intelligence
A University of Manchester astronomer has led a major international overhaul of the rules that would govern how scientists announce evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence to the world.
Professor Michael Garrett, the Sir Bernard Lovell Chair of Astrophysics, chaired a global effort to update the long-standing “post-detection protocols” used by researchers involved in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).
The updated guidelines have now been formally ratified by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA).
The revised Declaration of Principles marks the first major update to the protocols in more than 15 years and reflects a media landscape transformed by social media, artificial intelligence and the 24-hour news cycle.
Acknowledging that any credible detection of extraterrestrial technology would be a transformative event for humanity, the new Declaration establishes a rigorous framework for verification, transparency and global risk communication.
"The information environment we operate in today is vastly more complex than it was in 2010," said Professor Michael Garrett, Chair of the IAA SETI Committee.
"In an era of deepfakes, automated misinformation, and instant global connectivity, a single unverified claim could trigger confusion or panic. These new protocols ensure that scientists maintain the highest standards of evidence before making announcements to the world."
Adapting to a new era of SETI research
SETI and Technosignature research have expanded significantly since the previous protocols were adopted in 2010.
Scientists now investigate the entire electromagnetic spectrum, including excess infrared heat signatures from megastructures, optical laser emission, and even multi-messenger signals.
The updated Declaration explicitly recognises this broader approach.
It also addresses other modern challenges, including protections for researchers, acknowledging that scientists involved in potential detection could face harassment, doxxing, or intense media scrutiny.
It also acknowledges the risk of viral rumours, ensuring verified data is distinguished from hoaxes or terrestrial interference.
Verification before announcement
At the heart of the new rules is a reaffirmation of a core scientific principle: “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”.
Under the revised protocols, no public announcement should be made until a signal or artifact has been rigorously authenticated by independent organisations using different instrumentation.
"We do not shout “alien” the moment we see a strange blip," Professor Garrett added. "The scientific method demands we check, check again, and then ask others to check.
Only when we have reached a consensus that a signal is credible do we bring it to the world."
The 'No Reply' Consensus
While the protocols outline how to share news of a discovery, they remain firm on one critical restriction: No reply should be sent.
The Declaration reaffirms the enduring principle that transmitting a response to an extraterrestrial intelligence is a decision that belongs to all of humanity and should only take place following international consultations, specifically through the United Nations.
What happens next
With the updated Declaration ratified by the IAA Board, the aim is to see the document lodged with other stakeholders, including the United Nations.
A formal technical presentation of the protocols to the wider community, including the scientific press, will take place at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) later this year in Türkiye.
The IAA SETI Committee will also establish a permanent Post-Detection Sub-Committee, bringing together experts in social science, law, and ethics, to advise on the longer-term societal implications of a confirmed discovery.
