Katie Wilson agrees to turn on CCTV cameras near FIFA World Cup games after urging from councilmembers, 'general but credible threats'

Socialist Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson revealed on Friday that due to "general but credible threats to safety and security" detailed by the FBI and Seattle police, cameras in the Stadium District will be activated during FIFA World Cup games.

"Earlier this week, I received an updated briefing from the Seattle Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation on the current global and local threat environment. The breadth and depth of intelligence gathering that informed the briefing identified general but credible threats to safety and security during the games. While not unexpected given an event of this magnitude, this information has persuaded our law enforcement, emergency management, and FIFA security partners that we should be operating at a heightened risk level. Given this information, the Stadium District cameras will be activated during the FIFA World Cup tournament," Wilson said in a statement.

She said that the safety of "residents, visitors, and fans is our highest priority, and I understand that many community members are deeply concerned about privacy, civil liberties, and the appropriate use of public safety technology."

"I share those values. While I have decided to have the cameras ready to help us quickly establish situational awareness near the stadiums if needed, we will continue honing our policies and protections to safeguard the data these videos capture." She said that partner agencies for the event have "developed a strong thoughtful plan that prioritizes both public safety and the positive experience of everyone attending these events."

Wilson had announced in March plans to pause the expansion of the Real-Time Crime Center CCTV camera program pending the completion of an audit of privacy and data governance. She said at the time that the installation of cameras in the Stadium District would continue, but cameras would not be turned on unless there was a credible threat.

Seattle City Council members urged the cameras to be turned on for the games, which are expected to draw thousands of fans to the city for the event. Councilmember Bob Kettle sent a letter to Wilson urging her to turn them on, and that the decision to pause the cameras’ use "is not contemplated by the ordinances passed by the City Council that authorize and appropriate funds for this public safety initiative." He said that Seattle "is the only one of the 11 host cities without a fully active CCTV system. Leaving this vulnerability unaddressed is an unwarranted and reckless risk to public safety."

In late May, Councilmember Rob Saka urged Wilson to turn the cameras on for the event, citing his experience at the Boston Marathon in 2013, where a fatal bombing took place. "In 2013, me and my wife ran the Boston Marathon. And then the first of the bombs went off, and I'll never forget. And then another device exploded shortly thereafter," he said during a Public Safety Committee meeting.

Saka, who represents the district where the games will take place, credited Boston’s CCTV cameras for helping law enforcement identify the bombers. "The stadium district cameras have already been authorized. The infrastructure exists, and I believe that waiting for a purported credible threat before activating those tools is far too reactive for an event of this magnitude," he said.

Speaking with the Ari Hoffman Show on 570 KVI, Seattle Police Officers Guild President Kent Loux said that the mayor’s office had demanded that a social media post from the union highlighting how the CCTV cameras help solve crimes be taken down. "We basically said, how many more examples do you need of these cameras working," he said of the post.

The Government has signed up to a legally binding target to cut the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions by 87% by 2040, Ed Miliband has announced.

Today (Tuesday June 2nd) the Government has set out its proposed level for the seventh Carbon Budget, which sets a science-led target of ~87% emissions reduction in the period 2038 to 2042 – endorsed by the Environmental Audit Committee and the Climate Change Committee.

It comes as an independent report from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, supported by analysis from the Confederation of British Industries Economics, today shows that the Net Zero economy supports over one million jobs in the UK, adding £105 billion in gross value added (GVA) to the UK economy in 2025 alone, as it continues to thrive as one of the UK’s fastest- growing economic sectors.

The new target is based on evidence-based assumptions about how the country will take a consumer choice-led approach to the adoption of technologies such as solar, batteries and EVs that will cut bills for families.

It all sounds bureaucratic and, of course, it’s all for our own good. The reality, though, is that the plan, which needs Parliamentary approval, will change our lives radically and for the worse. DESNZ’s talk about “consumer choice-led” is sheer hypocrisy and is the opposite of the truth.

The cut of 87% is measured from 1990 levels, but in practical terms it means a reduction of 74% from current emissions.

Hertsmere Borough Council Approves £4 Billion Project as Part of UK's AI Action Plan

One of Europe’s largest data centres is set to be constructed in Hertfordshire, within London’s commuter belt, following recent approval by Hertsmere Borough Council.

The £4 billion DC01UK project, described by the developers as Europe's largest cloud and AI data centre, will span approximately 2 million square feet and is targeted for completion by 2029.

This development aligns with the UK Government's recently launched AI Action Plan, which has designated data centres as critical national infrastructure essential to the nation's technological advancement.

The Minister for Telecoms, Sir Chris Bryant, highlighted the significance of data centres, describing them as central to modern digital infrastructure and vital for the country's economic and technological strategies.

The data centre, situated near the M25 motorway and overseen by the company DC01UK, will occupy 85 acres and is expected to generate 500 construction jobs, 200 permanent skilled positions, and more than 13,700 indirect jobs.

Transportation improvements, including bus route expansions and road upgrades, are also planned as part of the project.

Jeremy Newmark, leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, referred to the project as a significant development for the borough.

He emphasized ongoing public consultations to ensure community engagement during the project's development phase.

Google’s New CAPTCHA Plans Will Create a Two-Tier Internet Only Accessible to Those With ‘Approved’ Devices

Never mind Fancy Bear, or the NSO Group, the biggest threat to the open internet today is from the Big Tech corporations on which it has come to depend. For what else are we to conclude given that Google appears to be working on a system to lock large parts of the internet behind a new form of CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) designed not to tell apart humans from bots, but instead to make an un-person of anyone who doesn’t own an ‘approved’ Android or Apple device.

Google’s reCAPTCHA service is used by a wide variety of websites, many of them independent of Google in every other regard, to limit incoming traffic or data entered into contact forms. It is intended to prevent automated software from accessing these resources and using them to send spam messages or flood websites with denial of service attacks. You have probably encountered it when told to identify all the bicycles in a grid of images.

Under the auspices of its Cloud Fraud Defence programme, Google is introducing a new form of CAPTCHA for which the way to ‘prove’ one is a human is to be in possession of a Google-approved device. Reclaim the Net‘s original reporting focused on the threat to deGoogled phones, meaning phones running Android-like operating systems which have Google’s – often unwelcome – proprietary features removed, such as GrapheneOS or LineageOS. However, just as the dull name of ‘age verification‘ serves as a cloak beneath which schemes to end all truly personal computing can be smuggled, the danger here could be much broader than the technically focused headline implies. As the sources discussing this are relatively few, it is hard to ascertain exactly what has already been rolled out and what is still in the conceptual stages. But it appears that the new style of CAPTCHA threatens not just users with deGoogled phones but anyone without an ‘approved’ device. Google’s own documentation confirms the existence – as a “Preview” in limited use with alternative options presently existing – of CAPTCHAs which require an Apple or Android handset to pass them. But it describes this in a “Mobile Verification” context, which may imply a more limited use than reCAPTCHA in general. However, with such functionality possible, there is no reason that Google could not activate this, without alternative options, everywhere that its reCAPTCHA-branded prompts appear.

Knowing that locking out everyone except Android users would have even the most clueless politicians smelling a monopoly, Google has deigned to also allow Apple iOS users through, but their approval is nonetheless limited to devices where the full tech stack is under corporate control. Apple phones and tablets use a locked bootloader to trap users within a walled garden, where they are at Apple’s mercy whenever an unwelcome new feature is introduced. Unless the Keep Android Open campaign succeeds, certified Android devices will soon be scarcely better, a condition of certification being that manufacturers must obstruct users from side-loading to install apps from outside Google’s Play Store.

Because Apple and Android phones do not respect your freedom, Google chooses to trust them. That’s an odd-sounding sentence, so let me explain.

The mountains of Kurdistan, the 1970s. In the heart of hostile territory and far from public view, a secret war was underway. Mossad agents and IDF officers were operating in the shadows, helping Kurdish rebels in their fight against Iraq.

Sagi feared that refusing a personal gift from the rebel leader would be seen as an insult and could damage the delicate relationship with the Kurdish rebels. He consulted the Mossad officer who was with him in the field, and the two decided to wait for the arrival of then-Mossad chief Meir Amit before making any final decision about the bear’s future.

In the meantime, the cub was given a name: Shamo

But by the time Amit arrived, Shamo had become part of the unit. For two full months, he slept in the tent with the three Israeli agents advising the Kurds, accompanied them to secret meetings and even shared their food rations. The agents described him as “a bear that thinks he is a dog.”

When Amit finally landed for a visit, he was stunned to find the hardened members of the Israeli delegation playing with the furry mascot. He understood there was no way to guarantee the bear a safe life in Kurdistan, and no realistic way to release him into the wild.

“We’ll find him a solution,” Amit promised.

‘We don’t leave the bear behind’

After three months of living together, it was time for Sagi to leave Kurdistan. During the handover to his replacement, the operational instruction was clear: “We don’t leave the bear behind.”

The agents consulted a reconnaissance fighter from Kibbutz Ma’abarot, a man who understood both explosives and animals. His suggestion was to bring the bear to Israel and place him in the kibbutz petting zoo.

Luckily for the children of Ma’abarot, the idea of putting a bear in a small animal corner meant for peacocks and guinea pigs was dropped. Instead, it was decided that Shamo’s final destination would be the Tel Aviv zoo, located where Gan Ha’ir mall stands today.

LAS VEGAS – This week, five men pleaded guilty to distributing thousands of violent and sadistic child sexual abuse material (CSAM) across peer-to-peer networks.

On June 1, Andrew Padilla, of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty to making available for download by other users of a peer-to-peer network more than 4,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse material. Padilla admitted that he possessed about 160 images and videos depicting sadistic or masochistic, including infants and toddlers and children under the age of 12. Padilla pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The statutory maximum penalty is 20 years for distribution of child pornography and 20 years for possession of child pornography.

On June 1, Jimmy Franklin Dearman, of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty to making available for download by other users of a peer-to-peer network approximately 239 files of child sexual abuse material and distributing at least 39 of the files. Additionally, he admitted to possessing over 1,600 images and 242 videos of child sexual abuse material depicting sadistic or masochistic conduct of infants and toddlers, and children under the age of 12. Dearman pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The statutory maximum penalty is 20 years for distribution of child pornography and 20 years for possession of child pornography.

On June 5, James Donovan, of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty to distributing child sexual abuse material at least 11 times with other users and channels of the social media application Discord. Donovan admitted that he also transported child sexual abuse material to an Amazon Cloud account using the internet. He also possessed about 70 printed images and over 50,000 digital images and videos of child sexual abuse material depicting sadistic or masochistic conduct or other depictions of violence, infants and toddlers, and prepubescent minors under the age of 12. Donovan pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography, one count of transportation of child pornography, and one count of possession of child pornography. The statutory maximum penalty is 20 years for distribution of child pornography, 20 years for the transportation of child pornography, and 20 years for possession of child pornography.

On June 5, Randall William Rushton, of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty to making available for download, on two separate occasions, over 600 total images and videos of child sexual abuse material for download by other users of a peer-to-peer network. He also admitted that he possessed over 11,000 images and videos depicting sadistic or masochistic, including infants and toddlers and children under the age of 12. Rushton pleaded guilty to two counts of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The statutory maximum penalty is 20 years for distribution of child pornography and 20 years for possession of child pornography.

On June 5, Travis Ehlers, of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty to making available for download by other users of a peer-to-peer network more than 500 images and videos of child sexual abuse material. Ehlers admitted that he possessed approximately 13,420 images and about 1,784 videos of child sexual abuse material depicting sadistic or masochistic conduct or other depictions of violence, infants and toddlers, and prepubescent minors under the age of 12. Ehlers pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The statutory maximum penalty is 20 years for distribution of child pornography and 20 years for possession of child pornography.

Five Atlanta Men Arrested on International Firearms Trafficking Charges

ATLANTA – Five Atlanta men, including a U.S./Jamaican dual citizen, have been charged with numerous offenses involving the alleged trafficking of hundreds of stolen firearms to the Caribbean.

“These defendants allegedly perpetrated a multi-year crime spree in the city of Atlanta—breaking into vehicles and stealing guns—to source firearms to be smuggled out of our country, fueling violence overseas,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “Thanks to the collaboration between a wide range of federal law enforcement agencies through our Homeland Security Task Force and the Atlanta Police Department, the trafficking ring allegedly responsible for these crimes has been dismantled.”

“This multi-agency operation underscores HSI’s commitment to combat the illegal trafficking of firearms and protect our communities both domestically and abroad,” said Steven N. Schrank, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Georgia and Alabama. The package contained three 9mm pistols, which had not been declared as required by law, hidden in a package containing a queen air mattress. One of the three handguns was reported stolen on March 1, 2025, in Atlanta.

SAN DIEGO – Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of California filed 148 border-related cases this week, including charges of bringing in aliens for financial gain, reentering the U.S. after deportation, and importation of controlled substances.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California is the fourth-busiest federal district, largely due to a high volume of border-related crimes. This district, encompassing San Diego and Imperial counties, shares a 140-mile border with Mexico. It includes the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the world’s busiest land border crossing, connecting San Diego (America’s eighth largest city) and Tijuana (Mexico’s second largest city).

In addition to reactive border-related crimes, the Southern District of California also prosecutes a significant number of proactive cases related to terrorism, organized crime, drugs, white-collar fraud, violent crime, cybercrime, human trafficking and national security. Recent developments in those and other significant areas of prosecution can be found here.

On May 30, Luis Andres Pereyda Gonzalez, a Mexican national, was arrested and charged with Importation of a Controlled Substance. According to a complaint, Customs and Border Protection officers discovered 203 pounds of cocaine concealed in the bed of his Ford F-150 truck as he tried to cross the border at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

On June 2, Lorenzo Mendoza-Hernandez, a Mexican citizen, was arrested and charged with Deported Alien Found in the United States. According to a complaint, Border Patrol agents apprehended Mendoza-Hernandez, an unauthorized alien who was previously deported in 2016 through Calexico, after a brief foot chase about three miles north of the border and eight miles west of the Tecate and Port of Entry.

On June 3, Qi Hua He, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and charged with Bringing in Aliens for Financial Gain. According to a complaint, He attempted to smuggle in a Chinese national via the San Ysidro Port of Entry using a passport that had been lawfully issued to someone else.

The immigration cases were referred or supported by federal law enforcement partners, including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE ERO), Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with the support and assistance of state and local law enforcement partners.

It involved covertly seeding promiscuous claims of antisemitism against political opponents, attempting to silence independent media that threatened to expose its project, and—ultimately—developing the dishonest leadership pitch that allowed Keir Starmer to trick a left-wing membership to elect him leader.

Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary responsible for the ban on Piker and Uygur, was one of a ‘brave band’ of eight MPs that guided the Labour Together project during the leadership of Starmer’s left-wing predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn.

Elected in 2024 as part of the Labour’s landslide, Taylor was closely vetted and approved by a Labour Party bureaucracy reporting directly to Labour Together’s long-time former managing director. And the single largest donor to Taylor’s election campaign was Labour Together.

Piker and Uygur were not banned by the Labour Party—they were banned by the Labour Together party. The primary architect of the Labour Together project is Morgan McSweeney, who was, until recently, Starmer’s chief of staff and widely understood as the real force running the government. McSweeney resigned in February after it was revealed he had pushed Peter Mandelsohn as the UK’s ambassador to the U.S., despite knowing of his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

I know McSweeney’s capacity for destroying free speech—and especially criticism of Israel—first-hand. I have been investigating the Labour Together Project since 2021, setting out my findings in my book, “The Fraud.” As a result, I was one of multiple journalists targeted by Labour Together. I was reported by Labour Together to the UK’s cybersecurity agency, in an apparent attempt to catalyze criminal investigations into me and my colleagues.

I was forced to fend off repeated allegations, briefed to the media by Labour Together, that I was under investigation by the UK’s security services on the basis of ludicrous suggestions that my colleagues and I at the small anti-corruption non-profit Shadow World Investigations were patsies of Russia. The allegations are totally false, and obviously so, not least because we have faced legal and extra-legal threats for reporting on the corruption of Russian oligarchs. In 2026, the Guardian confirmed that, despite Labour Together’s best efforts, the UK’s security services declined to open an investigation into me based on tawdry and fabricated conspiracy theories.

I am still trying to find out exactly how far these damaging smears travelled. According to a senior investigative reporter at The Times, copies of a highly defamatory and genuinely insane report about me, my family, and colleagues was “disseminated widely in Westminster and Fleet Street.” Did this stop or chill mainstream reporting of my book? I’m still trying to find out.. But in a media environment already hostile to left-wing journalists, I doubt it helped.
