The State should not intrude into and exercise intimate control over the family and the household. This contention is a great and pernicious error, as it would violate the rights of individuals and impose unreasonable regulations under the pretense of public benefit.
The State should not abolish or absorb the paternal authority, as it has the same source as human life itself. The child belongs to the father, and is under the power and charge of its parents before it attains the use of free will.
The State should not interfere with the private agreements between the working man and the employer, such as wages and working hours, unless circumstances require the State's sanction and protection. In such cases, recourse can be had to societies or boards, or other modes of safeguarding the interests of the wage-earners.
